Chapter 26: Shall We Hold Hands?
“Shirayuri-senpai? Is something wrong?”
Seeing Shirayuri-senpai, whose cheeks were unusually flushed, I couldn’t help but ask.
With her face still red, she replied,
“Ritsu-san said that I look good when I smile… but rather than explaining that, there’s something more important.”
With that, she gave me a gentle smile and said,
“I want you to remember that more than worrying about you, Ritsu-san, you’ve given me so many smiles. Please, never forget that.”
“Ah… I understand.”
It felt strange to think that someone like me had made Shirayuri-senpai smile so much.
Still, I realized this wasn’t something to brush off with modesty or denial, so I accepted her words as they were.
As we continued to chat about trivial things, we eventually arrived at the town.
Once there, a question popped into my mind.
“Do you usually come to town, Shirayuri-senpai?”
Shirayuri-senpai, the only daughter of the Shirayuri Group.
I was curious if someone like her ever used the town’s facilities.
“Hmm…”
Looking around briefly, she turned in a specific direction and said,
“I do visit buildings like that one occasionally, but I rarely use the town’s facilities. In fact, as far as I can remember, this is my first time walking into town like this.”
Following her gaze, I saw an incredibly tall building.
It was the kind with a helipad on the roof—a proper high-rise.
For an ordinary high school student like me, it would be impossible to even set foot in such a place.
“As expected, Shirayuri-senpai is amazing.”
Or rather!
Right after I said that, I realized something important from her earlier statement and quickly opened my mouth to speak.
“I’m sorry! I just assumed we’d meet and walk here together today, but should I have arranged for a taxi… no, a chauffeur-driven car?”
Feeling flustered at the thought of making her walk, I asked.
But Shirayuri-senpai gently shook her head, her usual calm demeanor unchanged.
“There’s no need for such arrangements. In fact, I enjoyed walking beside you and talking during our time together. This has been the most pleasant journey I’ve ever had.”
She smiled kindly as she spoke.
…For someone who’s the daughter of a major corporation, you’d expect her to be more aloof or prideful.
But Shirayuri-senpai lacked any such pretentiousness.
“In that case, I’m glad.”
When I said that, her smile remained warm and unchanged.
But then, midway through, she stopped walking.
Looking curiously in a certain direction, she asked,
“Ritsu-san, what kind of store is that?”
I stopped walking as well and followed her gaze.
Ahead of us, there was a shop with a long line of people. The store was selling…
“Oh, that’s a donut shop.”
“Donuts…?”
She didn’t seem to recognize the word. I nodded and explained,
“Yes, they’re ring-shaped treats. They’re sweet and have a unique texture.”
“I see… I knew I was unfamiliar with common things, but I’m embarrassed to admit that I’ve never even heard of donuts before.”
Considering her background, it made sense.
It wouldn’t be surprising if there were many other things she didn’t know, things that most high schoolers took for granted.
“Well then, would you like to try some donuts now?”
“Really?!”
“Of course. We didn’t come here with any specific goal, so if you’re interested, let’s give it a try.”
“Thank you, Ritsu-san.”
Her delighted expression warmed my heart.
We joined the end of the line leading into the shop.
Then—
“…”
In front of us stood a couple, likely dating, holding hands as they waited in line.
It wasn’t an uncommon sight.
They weren’t bothering anyone, so I didn’t pay much attention.
“Ritsu-san.”
Hearing Shirayuri-senpai call my name, I turned to face her.
She extended her pale hand toward me, her cheeks flushed red with embarrassment, and shyly said,
“Shall we… hold hands too, like the couple in front of us?”

“What!? H-Hand… you mean holding hands!?”
“Yes.”
“W-Why would we hold hands?”
Out of nowhere, Shirayuri-senpai suddenly asked, Shall we hold hands?
I was flustered and asked her, to which she tilted her head slightly, her cheeks still flushed, and replied:
“The people in front of us are holding hands, so I thought it might be proper for us to do the same while standing in line.”
“U-Um… oh, I see.”
Hearing that, I realized that Shirayuri-senpai had completely misunderstood the situation. Wanting to clarify, I quickly responded:
“Those people are most likely a couple, which is why they’re holding hands. There’s no rule requiring people to hold hands while waiting in line.”
“R-Really…? Is that so?”
“Yes. So, there’s no reason for us to hold hands.”
“…”
After standing frozen for a moment, her hand still extended, Shirayuri-senpai retracted it and returned it to her side. She then spoke, her tone apologetic:
“I’m sorry. I’ve never had the experience of standing in line at such a shop before…”
“No need to apologize. It’s perfectly understandable to misunderstand in a situation like this. Besides, it’s good that we clarified things before holding hands.”
“…Was it really… a good thing?”
“…Huh?”
I hadn’t expected her to question that, so her response caught me off guard. Still, I voiced my thoughts:
“Wasn’t it? If we hadn’t clarified, Shirayuri-senpai would’ve ended up holding my hand the entire time we waited for our turn.”
“…I…”
Just as she seemed about to say something—
“Next customer! Please step this way!”
The staff member called out.
Shirayuri-senpai quickly snapped out of it, saying:
“It’s nothing. It seems we’re being called, so let’s proceed.”
“Right.”
Though curious about what she was about to say, I decided to let it go since she dismissed it as nothing. Following the staff’s call, we stepped forward together and looked at the menu displayed near the counter.
“There are so many types of donuts… Which one will you choose, Ritsu-san?”
“I’ll go with this one.”
I pointed at a chocolate-flavored donut.
“In that case, I’ll have the same as you, Ritsu-san.”
“Got it.”
And so, I ordered two chocolate donuts.
When I was about to pay—
“Please, for two of these.”
“Wha—!?”
Before I could pull out my cash, Shirayuri-senpai handed over a card that was clearly not something an average person could possess. She was quicker than me, but I was more concerned with her words than the card itself. I quickly objected:
“Wait a moment! At least let me pay for my own—”
“I absolutely cannot allow Ritsu-san to bear any financial burden while I’m accompanying you. If you have any requests, I would be delighted to fulfill them. But for this, please understand.”
Though she usually carried a gentle and calm demeanor, her words now carried a firm resolve. It was clear she wouldn’t budge.
“…I understand. Thank you.”
Accepting her insistence, I offered my gratitude.
“No need to thank me for something as minor as this.”
Shirayuri-senpai replied with her usual soft tone.
After receiving the donuts, we found a table inside and sat facing each other. Since she mentioned she didn’t know how to eat a donut, I explained it to her. Soon enough—
“So this is a donut… What an incredibly delicious treat.”
Taking her first bite, Shirayuri-senpai smiled warmly. Seeing her enjoy it made me feel unexpectedly content as I took my own bite.
As we ate, we exchanged impressions about the donuts. After some time, Shirayuri-senpai, sitting across from me, raised the corners of her lips and said joyfully:
“Sharing delicious food with Ritsu-san and talking about it together… I wish I could spend all my time like this.”
“I agree.”
When I echoed her sentiment, Shirayuri-senpai glanced at my outfit and remarked:
“I’ve been meaning to say this since we met today, but your outfit suits you very well, Ritsu-san.”
“Ah, thank you.”
Being complimented on my clothes was rare, and I felt a bit shy, fumbling with my words. But I quickly added:
“This vest is something I picked out when I went shopping with a friend earlier this week. I really like it too.”
“Fufu, I think it’s excellent. You have a good eye for fashion, Ritsu-san.”
“Not really… My friend is knowledgeable about clothes and helped me pick it out.”
“Oh, I see. You have a friend who knows a lot about fashion.”
“Yeah. She’s actually pretty famous around school, so you might know her, Shirayuri-senpai. Her name is Hinase.”
“…!”
The moment I mentioned that name, Shirayuri-senpai’s eyes widened. In the next instant, her expression darkened, and she fell completely silent.
