Chapter 24: The Most Important Thing!
Three days had passed since I went out with Hinase.
For the first time in a while, I forgot about limits.
After school, I kept working long hours without stopping.
Working long hours for three straight days was enough to show on my face, but I had never worked in a way that would make me tired after just that much.
So far, no one had worried about me, not even Hinase or Shirayuri-senpai, wondering if I was overworking myself.
But—
“Welcome home—”
“Onii-chan! Why is it that you’ve been coming home after 9 PM, like the past two days and today?”
When I opened the front door to say “I’m home,” An came out to meet me in the hallway, looking angry.
…That’s right.
Even if I could hide it from Hinase and Shirayuri-senpai, I could never hide it from An, who lived in the same house.
Still, I wasn’t doing anything I felt guilty about, so I spoke up clearly.
“Of course, I’ve been at work. I’ve been taking it easy recently, so I think it’s fine for me to work this much, right?”
“I didn’t say anything because I thought it was just a little, but three days in a row working long hours is no good!”
“…An, you know that I won’t give up over something like this. It’s just three days, not a whole week of work—”
“That’s still not okay!”
“…Huh?”
An’s strong words confused me, and she continued speaking.
“You’ve always been pushing yourself alone until now, so you’re saying three days is fine, but I don’t want you to think it’s okay to work like that. No, honestly, I don’t want you to push yourself even for just one day!”
“…”
“Do you remember what I told you before, Onii-chan? I’m not just your little sister who bothers you anymore. Now, I can support you just like you’ve always supported me.”
“…Yeah, I remember.”
It had been about half a month since An had said that.
“What I said back then was really what I meant. From now on, the two of us can live together, and I can make enough money with just my acting. So, you don’t need to work anymore!”
“I should… quit my part-time job?”
“Yeah!”
An walked closer to me and, in a gentle voice, said:
“Quit your part-time job and stay with me at home from now on, okay? I’ll cook every day, and when we have time, we can watch movies together. If you want to do anything fun, I’ll do it for you whenever, and we can do all sorts of things… In short, stop pushing yourself, and let’s live the way I just described! You’ve been working so hard by yourself all this time, so living like that would be no punishment at all.”
“An, I’ve told you before, I’ve never thought of you as just my sister who bothers me.”
“…!”
I interrupted An’s words and she widened her eyes.
But I kept speaking, not minding.
“And I’ve said this before too, but I live the way I want to. I’ve never thought of my life as unfortunate.”
“That’s a lie! I know how much you’ve pushed yourself to help me get into high school—”
“Sure, there were many times it was tough, but I’ve never thought of it as an unlucky life… because—”
I placed my right hand on An’s left shoulder and looked directly into her eyes.
“I’ve always had you by my side.”
“…Me…?”
An asked again, and I nodded.
“Yeah. If I had been alone, I might have been in despair, but I always had you by my side, telling me that I’m important. For me, that’s more happiness than I could ever ask for.”
“Onii-chan… Onii-chan!”
An started crying, called my name, and then hugged me.
…I didn’t want to leave the situation where I kept making An worried as it was.
But—
“Onii-chan… no matter how much time passes, you’ll always be the most important to me!”
“…Thank you, An.”
I felt happy to be with An, who cared so much for me.
I continued to gently stroke An’s head until she stopped crying.
As she had asked, I made sure to take the next Saturday off to rest.
And finally, Sunday arrived—the day that was a big deal for me, when I would go out with Shirayuri-senpai, just the two of us.

Chapter 25: Outing with Shirayuri-senpai
Sunday.
The meeting time with Shirayuri-senpai was set for 11:00 AM, and it was now 25 minutes before that time.
I had already arrived a little away from the meeting place, just before the fountain square.
I couldn’t risk making Shirayuri-senpai wait, not even for a second.
Normally, this would be too early, but today it felt just right.
Thinking this, I turned the corner and stepped into the fountain square—
“…Eh?”
I saw someone standing in front of the fountain.
I couldn’t help but let out a surprised voice.
“…”
The person was wearing a white shirt with a black ribbon, paired with a black skirt that reached just below the knee.
She had snow-white hair that looked beautiful and pure—Shirayuri-senpai.
In her casual clothes, she looked even more like a graceful, adult woman, making it hard to believe she was still in high school…
But what surprised me more than that was…
“Why is Shirayuri-senpai already here…?”
That was the question in my mind.
“Anyway, I have to make sure I don’t make Shirayuri-senpai wait any longer.”
If I had time to think, I should be rushing to meet her.
I quickly decided to approach her, and when I did, Shirayuri-senpai noticed me and smiled as usual, saying:
“Ritsu-san, good morning.”
“Good morning.”
We exchanged greetings, and for a moment, I almost got lost in the elegant floral scent that seemed to emanate from her. But I pushed that thought aside and stopped, then spoke.
“I’m sorry for making you wait, Shirayuri-senpai.”
“No, no. I arrived early because I didn’t want to make you wait, Ritsu-san. Please, don’t worry about it.”
Shirayuri-senpai kindly said this, and then continued.
“Actually, I was surprised that you arrived earlier than I expected, Ritsu-san.”
“I thought I shouldn’t keep you waiting, so I left earlier than usual… looks like we were both thinking the same thing.”
“…! You and I, thinking the same thing…”
I laughed softly, and Shirayuri-senpai’s eyes widened for a moment. Then, she smiled happily, her cheeks turning red.
“Shirayuri-senpai…?”
As I wondered about her reaction, Shirayuri-senpai lifted the corners of her mouth and said:
“I’m sorry, I got carried away… There’s still some time before the scheduled meeting, but what should we do now?”
“Since we’ve already met, there’s no reason to stick to the exact time. Let’s go to the town now.”
“I understand.”
With Shirayuri-senpai nodding, we began walking side by side toward the town.
With every step, her hair swayed, and a lovely fragrance filled the air.
I could hardly believe I was walking side by side with Shirayuri-senpai.
I didn’t quite feel the reality of the situation, but I knew for sure this was really happening, and it felt so surreal.
Then, Shirayuri-senpai spoke.
“Ritsu-san, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy schedule to go out with me today.”
“I-it’s nothing. I’m not really busy, so please don’t worry… Actually, are you okay, Shirayuri-senpai?”
“Yes. I’ve already finished everything I needed to do for this month, so I’m fine.”
She said this calmly, without any sign of bragging. As I admired her more, Shirayuri-senpai leaned slightly closer to me and spoke.
“Rather than me, I’m really worried about you, Ritsu-san.”
“You’re worried about me?”
“Yes… If I think you’re overworking yourself, I just can’t relax.”
…Hinase, An, Hiiragi, and Shirayuri-senpai, too.
I’ve been blessed with so many kind people who care about me.
But because of that, I didn’t want to make them worry, so I immediately said:
“I’m fine, so please don’t worry about me.”
After hearing my words, Shirayuri-senpai fell silent for a moment before saying:
“I understand… But, if you ever reach your limit, please turn to me for help. If you try to carry everything by yourself and end up getting sick, I will do everything I can to make sure that doesn’t happen again, even if it means you might dislike me…”
“I understand. I’m really fine, so please don’t worry so much… You have such a lovely smile, and I don’t want to see that smile go away because of me.”
“…!”
When I honestly expressed my thoughts, Shirayuri-senpai’s eyes widened for a moment—her cheeks turned a deeper shade of red than I had ever seen before.
My guy is setting off flags, and they all have a pinkish reddish color to them.
