Chapter 3 – Changing Relationships
Toru Hasumi 2
Doki-doki, his heart was vibrating intensely. My heart is beating strongly as well.
If you listen closely, you can merge all of them together to make a very soothing sound.
But despite surrendering myself to the sounds I want to listen to all day. I had only heard one sound that I disliked.
So I whispered the proper answer in his ear.
“It’s Toru.”
Perhaps in response to the breath spilling from my lips, his body tremors slightly.
And just before I could no longer stand the reaction, he grabbed my shoulders and pulled away from me.
“Toru-san, I’d like for you to step away from me.”
But, that’s not the answer I want.
“Toru!”
I’m out of reason, I’m in a dreamy, floating mood, and I act on instinct.
When I puffed out my cheeks and muttered that in his ears, he, who had been upset all this time, gave off an air of exasperation. He treats me like a child, and I get a little angry at that.
“Toru, get away from me.”
But he finally calls me by that name. I forgave him for this special moment.
“Yes, I’ll leave.”
I said with a laugh, and he looked tired and defeated.
“Doing that so suddenly, what’s going on? Did I do something?”
He is usually very expressionless, but today he is making a large variety of faces. Perhaps it was something very shocking to him.
“You did something… something you can’t take back.”
But that’s nothing compared to the impact it had on me.
That’s when you can say that my world had truly changed.
“I don’t remember what I did at all. What did I do?”
“Fufu, do you want to know?
“Uh yeah, very much so.”
Hearing those words, I took a deep breath so fast that he didn’t notice. Then, I gathered all the courage I could muster and delivered the words.
“Well, come to my room then.”
Until now, no one has ever been allowed inside my room. It is my one and only remaining quiet place in the world.
It was the only place in the world where I could live, without any noise, it’s a place for me and me alone.
“It’s pretty scary, but I’ll go.”
I’m with you. It really is frightening. But I was hoping for something more.
“…Don’t worry, I’ll be gentle. Come on, let’s go. This way.”
I’m sure he’ll accept whatever I have to say, I have faith in him.

As I showed him to his room, he looked around and muttered something.
“It’s not a very high school girl-like room.”
A casual remark. But those words are not to be ignored.
“…….Have you ever been in someone else’s room?”
I would not allow such a thing.
I have rarely been angry because I had essentially given up on life until now. But now I can’t control my dark and heavy anger at his words.
So I looked into his mind to seek his sincere feelings.
“I’ve never been to one, nope.”
I concentrated my attention in such a way that I wouldn’t miss even the slightest sign, but there was no lie in his words.
“…Sounds like it’s true. Then that’s good.”
I can’t help but breathe a sigh of relief.
“Was I being facetious just now?”
“It doesn’t show on you, but I can tell.”
It’s because I can read minds. But, I couldn’t say those words to him.
“That’s great. But then I don’t think we’d be able to play baba nuki (Old maid) together.”
“Lies. Well, I don’t know.”
“Oi, oi. You want to play baba nuki in high school?”
He said this to me as if he was making fun of me.
“Yes. I’m sure that anything with Makoto would be fun.”
Just one month. That’s all it took to make being with him so much fun. Then, I’m sure it will continue to be fun.
I’m sure I won’t be bored even if I just stare at his face the whole time.
“So? What were you going to tell me?”
He asked me with a cough, as if he was trying to rearrange the conversation. But I wanted to have a little more fun, so I went off on a tangent.
“Wait. Before that, are you hungry?”
“I’m fine, don’t worry.”
I know he is not a high mileage guy. I thought it was about time.
“Well then, I’ll make you something real quick.”
“I don’t mind. I don’t want to stay here for too long.”
“No. I’m hungry too. Besides, if I’m cooking for one, I’m cooking for two.”
That day. It was a rehash of the lunch we had together in the gym.
I know what to say to him to get him to give in.
“…Sure, if I can ask you to do so.”
“Yes! I’ll make it in a jiffy, so sit back and wait.”
I stand in the kitchen, and he calls out to me, as if he was bored.
“Can I read this book of yours?”
“Go ahead.”
“Thank you.”
I put my hands out in front of me and got myself into the mood.
It was the first home-cooked meal I was going to make for the person I loved, and it was a battle I couldn’t lose.

I finished cooking and took the food to my table.
He looked at me with a puzzled look, then his eyes lit up with a blank expression when he noticed the aroma wafting through the air. What a cute little thing…!
“I don’t have much ingredients, I’m sorry that it’s just this.”
I hadn’t anticipated that he would come here at all, and to be honest, there weren’t many ingredients with me either.
“No, it looks good enough. I heard you live alone, but you’re actually pretty good at cooking.”
“No, I’m not that good though? But thank you.”
Despite his words, I have always been a good cook and have always had confidence in my cooking skills. Although I rarely demonstrate it on a regular basis.
“You’re welcome. Then, let’s get started. Itadakimasu.”
“Itadakimasu.”
After taking a bite, he began to eat it as if he was shoveling it down. If he eats it so deliciously, I think it was worth all the effort I put into making it.
“This is delicious!”
“Fufu. Go ahead, eat as much as you like.”
“Mmm…”
But then I heard that his mother is also a good cook. I was a little jealous that he eats it every day, even though it’s his own mother who does so.
But I got the win this time, so I’ll take it as a victory.
“Thank you.”
“Hmm? What?”
“No, it’s nothing”
And when we both finished our food, he stood up.
“Thanks for the food. Let me at least wash the dishes.”
“It’s fine. I don’t mind if I do it, okay?”
“No, let me do it. I’ll be sorry if I don’t do at least this much.”
“I really wish I could. But then, I’ll ask you to do it.”
“Yeah. I’ll borrow a sponge and detergent from the kitchen. Hasumi-sa… Toru, sit down, please.”
I took advantage of the favor, but only warned him against trying to call me by my last name out of habit.
The thing is. If I don’t get him thoroughly used to it, he’ll go back to saying that very soon.
Then I stared blankly at his back as he stood in the kitchen washing the dishes.
I hear the slightly high-pitched clanging from the dishes and the intermittent sound of running water.
Someone is in my room, and I hear noises other than my own breathing.
It was an unfamiliar sight, but not at all unpleasant. Rather, it felt very comfortable, as if I was being enveloped in a calming aura.
“I like…….. this feeling.”
After muttering those words in a small voice, my consciousness quietly sank as if I was being rocked by a cradle.
