Chapter 16: The Bestowed Name
“…Ah.”
“…Ara.”
After leaving Aria-san’s room, I was performing my duties as a soldier as usual, but then, unexpectedly, I had an unforeseen encounter. It was none other than the Second Princess, Philia-sama.
“Philia-sama…?”
“…”
Why is she here…? Behind Philia-sama, there was no guard in sight… Well, it’s true that the outside security is tight enough that no one with bad intentions could enter, but still, for her to be alone… Isn’t that concerning?
“Onee-sama mentioned that you would be here.”
“Um… yes.”
“As usual is fine. I am currently just a regular princess taking a break from my duties, not sneaking away from work.”
“That makes it even harder to respond…”
So… is it correct to interpret this as her slacking off?
“I’m definitely not slacking.”
“I didn’t say anything.”
“I’m not slacking at all.”
“…Alright.”
Well, let’s just leave it at that… I can’t see Luke around… No, if he were here, he probably would have fainted from shock. I wish someone could call him, but from the way Philia-sama speaks, I guess she implies not to say anything.
“However, there really isn’t much here.”
“That’s true… Not many people come here usually.”
“Indeed. But that doesn’t mean this place doesn’t need to be guarded. Laurent-san, please continue with your work.”
“Ah… Yes!”
Empowered by Philia-sama’s direct encouragement, I couldn’t help but speak with more vigor.
Previously, I was startled when she gazed at me, but being addressed by her like this is indeed a pleasure. As a citizen of this country, it’s an honor just to be remembered by the princess.
“However, I would like to spend a bit more time here, if it’s okay with you. Can we talk here for a while?”
“Here…?”
Philia-sama’s bright blue eyes reflected my image.
Part of me hoped she would return to her duties soon, but perhaps such opportunities should be actively embraced… right? But lacking the courage to refuse, I nodded slightly.
“So… what shall we talk about?”
There’s really nothing to say, huh!
Still, it seems even Philia-sama can’t see the door behind me… Well, I already knew that.
Moreover, what’s interesting is that I’m standing as if leaning my back against the door. I wonder what would happen if the door were to open like this? A bit of mischief arises in me… but I wouldn’t do anything.
“Laurent-san, do you feel inferior to your siblings?”
“Eh? That’s quite sudden.”
“Sorry. I was just a little curious…”
Is there something to this? While guessing what it might be, I opened my mouth to respond to Philia-sama’s question.
“I discarded any feelings of inferiority a long time ago. I’ve come to believe that my current position is quite favorable.”
“Is that so? Looking at your expression, it seems you truly believe that. Does the same apply to your parents, not just your siblings?”
“Yes. In fact, I had a conversation this morning, and surprisingly, I felt very refreshed afterward.”
“…”
Observing Philia-sama fall silent, I recalled a rumor I had heard.
The princesses are considered treasures of this kingdom, yet compared to Lyza-sama, who seems to handle everything effortlessly, Philia-sama was said to be slightly less capable. Even if that were true, Philia-sama is undoubtedly remarkable… While I doubt she is thinking what I am, I’ll take the liberty of sharing a bit more.
“You know, there are many people who are more talented than oneself. In my case, they just happened to be close to me… Of course, initially, I thought it was utterly unfair. But then I realized, I am who I am, and I should just do what I can. That mindset made things easier for me.”
“That’s an interesting way to look at it.”
“Well, it could be seen as giving up, I guess.”
I said with a laugh, and Philia-sama laughed as well.
“Indeed, you’re right. I should do what I can… There’s no need to try to be like my sister in every aspect. I’m sorry, Laurent-san, this is actually the first time I’ve had such a conversation.”
So that’s how it was… Although I didn’t delve further, my conversation with Philia-sama turned out to be quite pleasant and relaxed.
Recently, Philia-sama has been extremely busy with official duties, so having a casual chat like this was something she hadn’t done in a while. I was happy thinking it might have provided her with some relief.
“Thank you, Laurent-san. I had a wonderful time.”
“No, no, the pleasure is mine… But maybe we should go somewhere more relaxing. It’s kind of making me anxious here.”
“Oh, but that could be interesting, couldn’t it?”
Not interesting at all!
Philia-sama chuckled, covering her mouth with her hand, and then looked up at the sky.
“It seems there are no changes in the magic shield today.”
“…”
“Recently… although it’s only happened a couple of times, there have been rumors about disturbances in the magic shield. However, there’s this mysterious sense of assurance that everything is absolutely fine… It seems no one is seriously considering the implications.”
At that point, Philia-sama paused for a moment before sharing such thoughts with me.
“Do you know this story, Laurent-san? There’s a tale that our kingdom once lost its name and was given a temporary one.”
“What is that about…?”
“It’s probably just some made-up story someone started. The name of our kingdom now is ‘Furyas,’ right?”
“Yes.”
“But… there’s a story that it used to be called ‘Faerie.’ It’s just a change in letters, but the tale says that in exchange for the grace of sacred power, its true name was offered… It’s all quite unclear, though.”
“Hmm…”
Honestly, it does sound like a far-fetched tale.
But ‘Faerie’… that’s also in Aria-san’s name, isn’t it?
“Well then, Laurent-san, let’s talk again if there’s another opportunity.”
“Eh, you’ll come again!?”
“Ufufu♪”
I sighed heavily as Philia-sama left, like a storm passing through.
Another time like this? The thought makes me wonder how much more my stomach can handle.
“…Names, huh?”
The story I just heard… is it merely a coincidence?
That thought lingered with me, stirring my curiosity.
TLN:
Kingdom’s Name is: フュリアス [Furiasu]
And Aria’s last name is: フュアリス [Fuarisu]
I wonder if I should fix it
