- Chapter 22: Aquarium
The reason my parents had been away from the estate with Olivia-san for so long was apparently because there had been a prophecy that a group thought to be attackers had entered Japan.
I didn’t know this, but apparently Japan’s prophecies were so incredible that they were worth mentioning by name.
While the housekeeper’s presence was certainly a big reason why the Williams family came to the Koutoku house, apparently an even bigger reason was that the prophecy had said to do so.
Well, in other words…
Now that the attackers mentioned in the prophecy had been repelled, there was no need to act separately and secretively anymore.
“So this is a Japanese aquarium…!”
That’s how we all came to visit an aquarium together.
It was a large group with my parents, myself, Olivia-san, and Margaret-chan.
“Is there any difference between Nordic aquariums and Japanese aquariums?”
I asked Olivia-san, who was sparkling with bright eyes and happily looking around in all directions.
“If anything, the aquariums in our country tend to be more education-focused. I love fish, you see. I heard that Japanese aquariums let you enjoy the fish you love more purely. I want to see something called a dolphin show!”
“Wow.”
Olivia-san really loved fish.
Her excitement level was incredibly high.
“…”
In contrast, Margaret-chan seemed the same as always.
She was sticking close to me and following along with her usual expression that made it hard to tell what she was thinking.
“Come on, let’s go! The fish are waiting for me.”
“Yeah… let’s go, Margaret-chan.”
“…”
I followed behind the unusually high-spirited Olivia-san together with Margaret-chan.
The aquarium we visited was one of the largest in Japan, and even on a weekday, there were quite a lot of people.
I hated to say it myself, but I was quite good-looking. If asked about my eye color, I’d have to answer “rainbow-colored?” With such eyes and white hair, I stood out wherever I went.
Next to me were Margaret-chan, who looked like a doll, and Olivia-san, who had a gallant appearance worthy of being called a prince. The two of them were from Northern Europe and possessed a beauty that wasn’t Japanese.
With the three of us together, we couldn’t help but stand out in any situation.
My parents? I think my parents didn’t look bad either. It’s just that their son and the two Northern Europeans were the strange ones.
“…”
Many gazes were directed at us from around.
I felt somewhat uncomfortable with all that attention.
“Oh! A stingray. A stingray! How cute.”
Meanwhile, Olivia-san, who didn’t seem to care about any of that at all, was happily excited looking at the fish.
“Margaret-chan. It’s a stingray. Have you seen one before?”
“…”
“Ah, you haven’t. We’re the same then. I haven’t either. This is my first time seeing one, but stingrays are really cute, aren’t they?”
“…”
Behind Olivia-san, I was peacefully exchanging words with Margaret-chan, whose responses were limited to nodding or shaking her head.
“Oh! It seems it’s almost time for the dolphin show! Let us go!”
“Ah, yeah… are you done with the stingrays?”
“…”
After confirming that Margaret-chan nodded to my words, we followed behind Olivia-san as she started walking ahead.
“…Long ago.”
“Hm?”
On the way, Margaret-chan quietly let out words.
“I came to an aquarium with my mother.”
“…Margaret-chan.”
“You heard, didn’t you?”
“…Oh my.”
“I didn’t want to come anymore… because it was a place of memories.”
“…!”
Tears spilled from Margaret-chan’s eyes.
“But I’m glad I could come.”
However, Margaret-chan grabbed my hand and showed me a definite smile.
Margaret-chan’s smile, which I was seeing for the first time, was very beautiful.
“I’m glad if that’s how you feel.”
I smiled back at Margaret-chan and firmly squeezed her hand that had gently grasped mine.
I couldn’t let anyone take this away from someone.
The girl in front of me had suffered a great wound, and yet she was still trying to stand up again and walk forward. How wonderful that was.
There was no way this should be taken away by others.
“So don’t you dare do anything tasteless, got it?”
I kicked backward at a man who had completely erased his presence and magical power and was standing behind me.
“…!?”
The man who received my full-power, magic-infused back kick was blown away.
“Wh-who are you!?”
[You’re noisy. What kind of talk is that when I’m trying to help you?]
“It talked!?”
[Obviously I’m humanoid! Of course I can talk!]
In the corner of my vision, I could see the demon that had manifested in the real world according to the technique I had prepared to summon at any time, standing in front of Olivia-san and properly fulfilling its role as a guard.
“A second attack. Was the first one just reconnaissance after all?”
Oni was nearby, so Olivia-san should be fine.
While keeping my attention on Margaret-chan behind me, I called out to the man who was getting back up.
