- Chapter 4: A Witch's Work
The day after we settled into the orphanage, I began looking for work, fortunate to possess transformation-related magic.
My magic allowed me to reshape most materials into any desired form with manageable magical consumption. I soon started working as a craftsman.
Using the five gold coins from Ephnol, I bought materials, transformed them into various tools, and sold them. It was a simple job.
I began by transforming iron and wood into everyday items, gradually moving on to more valuable materials like precious metals and gems. Working with expensive materials was riskier but also more profitable. Polished gems set in platinum rings sold for a surprisingly high price.
About a month into my new job, Istos approached me with a turning point in her life.
“Sister, I want to work too, to help out. But I am still trying to figure out what I should do. Is there a job that suits me?”
Considering her age, eleven, was young but not unusual in this world to start as an apprentice, I didn’t intend to stop her. Utilizing her enhancement magic in a job seemed the most practical option. Perhaps a bit risky, but I suggested becoming an adventurer or a guard, where her magic would be most effective.
She preferred the idea of adventuring over being a guard. I agreed, planning to arrange for a mentor to teach her properly. Being an adventurer required no initial cost, but training under an experienced adventurer would benefit her.
I lied about our financial situation, not wanting her to worry about money, and set out to hire an experienced adventurer for her training. I managed to engage a seasoned adventurer, slightly past his prime but rich in experience, perfect for a mentor.
Two weeks into her training, Istos managed well, though the rigorous regime left her exhausted. Despite my worries, it was necessary for her growth.
After a month of training, Istos had transformed into a competent adventurer beyond what one would expect of an eleven-year-old.
With both of us working, our financial situation has improved significantly. Thanks to her magical prowess, Istos excelled in her role, handling more tasks than an average adventurer.
We worked tirelessly for the next two years, saving enough to buy a house in Polis Commercial City. It wasn’t a mansion, but spacious enough for us to live comfortably as we grew up.
Thus, eight years passed since our lives stabilized, and we transitioned from girls to adults.
