- Chapter 11: Dungeon Boss
“Is this the deepest part?”
“Probably. This space is big enough to be the boss room.”
We conversed like this, facing a large stone-brick hall as spacious as a gymnasium.
It’s common knowledge that a powerful monster protecting the Dungeon Core resides in the deepest part of a dungeon.
This powerful monster is known as the Dungeon Boss, and its room is called the Boss Room.
We think this vast hall is the Boss Room, but… the actual Dungeon Boss is nowhere to be seen.
“I’ve never heard of a dungeon without a boss. Istos, do you know anything?”
“There are two possibilities. One, someone else came before us and defeated the Dungeon Boss. The other, the Dungeon Boss, is hiding somewhere.”
Just as Istos said, something strange happened before our eyes.
The sand in the stone-brick gaps began to stir and gradually formed a lump.
This lump of sand morphed into a humanoid shape, eventually becoming a three-meter-tall giant standing before us.
If I were to name this monster, it would be a Sand Golem.
“Looks like it’s the latter scenario.”
“Have you seen this creature before, Istos?”
“No, this is new to me. I’ll engage it, but let’s see what happens.”
Saying that Istos quickly approached the Sand Golem and launched an attack.
In response, the Sand Golem tried to counterattack with a sweeping motion of its massive arm, but it was sluggish.
Istos easily dodged it with a leap and decapitated the Sand Golem’s head.
However, the Sand Golem’s movements didn’t stop.
Effectively, it was just a lump of sand falling to the ground.
“Figured it would be like this. Probably, the core is hidden somewhere in its body.”
“What do we do?”
“Let’s fight a bit more. It could be a better matchup, but we might get lucky and hit the core. Nee-san, try attacking from all sides.”
“Understood.”
Continuing the battle, I followed Istos’s lead, launching attacks at the Sand Golem.
I transformed the stone bricks of the ground into stone spikes, stabbing them into the Sand Golem, but the impact felt minimal.
It seemed the same for Istos.
Dodging the Sand Golem’s sluggish attacks, she relentlessly delivered slashes, scattering sand.
Moreover, the Sand Golem’s head, which should have been severed, had regenerated.
Unless we destroy the core, it seems capable of gathering sand and self-regenerating.
To make matters worse, the sand scattered by Istos’s slashes began to move autonomously, separate from the main body.
The divided lumps of sand formed arm-like shapes, attempting to strike Istos from behind.
“Istos, behind you!”
“Whew! That was close. This would be easy, but it might get tricky if it drags on. Shall we retreat?”
Istos, narrowly avoiding the attack thanks to my warning, suggested this. However, I had just thought of a plan.
“…I have a strategy. Istos, can you cut off the monster’s head or limbs like before?”
“Of course! I can do it as many times as needed.”
Hearing my plan, Istos immediately moved closer to the Sand Golem and decapitated it again. I activated my magic at that moment, encasing the fallen sand in transformed stone bricks. This way, the sand couldn’t move independently, and the Sand Golem couldn’t regenerate.
If we repeat this, we should be able to whittle down the sand and uncover the core embedded in its body.
“If we keep this up, we should eventually defeat the monster. It’ll be a long battle, though.”
“If there’s a chance of winning, there’s no problem. Let’s continue.”
Following our plan, we repeatedly cut off the Sand Golem’s head and limbs, trapping the sand inside stones. The Sand Golem, while maintaining its humanoid shape, visibly shrank. Simultaneously, it started moving more agilely.
But even then, Istos was quicker. We continued our strategy successfully, reducing the Sand Golem to about one meter in size.
“It’s small enough now. I’ll take it from here.”
With that, Istos split the Sand Golem in half. A red glowing sphere embedded in the cut surface was visible – probably the core.
Without hesitation, Istos swung her sword, shattering the exposed core. With that, the Sand Golem was defeated, turning into mere sand scattering in the air.
“Phew, I didn’t expect it to be this challenging.”
“Really. I hope the effort is worth the reward.”
Istos and I walked towards the back of the boss room’s vast hall as we talked. Reaching the wall opposite the entrance, we found a purple gem-like object embedded in it – the Dungeon Core.
Separately, there was a chest, which, upon opening, revealed a magic tome.
“This looks like a tome for magic that creates sparks.”
“It’s a hit but mediocre magic. Do you want it, Nee-san?”
“Yes, it could be handy for cooking. Let’s take it.”
“Got it. Then, let’s destroy the Dungeon Core and leave.”
After I collected the tome, Istos shattered the Dungeon Core with her sword. Instantly, we were engulfed in bright light and teleported to the dungeon’s entrance. With that, our conquest of the dungeon was complete.
The dungeon we had just been in now became a mere underground storage. The stone-brick labyrinth that threatened people no longer existed.
“Thinking back, it ended up being just a regular job.”
“Did you want to do something else?”
“No, I just wished to spend more time bonding with you, Nee-san.”
As we walked back from the dungeon, Istos suddenly said this. I stepped in front of her and gently embraced her. After a moment, I let go and said,
“Are you satisfied now?”
In response to my words, Istos blushed, nodding silently.
