- Chapter 10: A Dungeon Date
“Nee-san, you’ve been paying much attention to Demeter and Hecate lately, right?”
“Do you think so?”
“Yes! The other day, Demeter was showing off the scarf you made for her, and last week, Hecate was boasting about her date with you.”
“Those two…”
This conversation happened a few days after my trip to the forest with Demeter. As we ate breakfast, Istos started complaining, apparently feeling left out.
“So, today, I will have you all to myself. You’re free today, right?”
“Well, I don’t have any plans.”
“Well then, we’ve decided on our plans for today.”
“Buu-buu.”
“Don’t complain, Demeter!”
And so, I ended up planning an outing with Istos. Our destination was a dungeon that had appeared in the city.
Dungeons can naturally occur anywhere. They are not limited to uninhabited places like caves or forests; they can even emerge in the middle of a city.
When a dungeon appears in a populated area, it’s essential to subdue it quickly because monsters emerge from it. Istos had taken on the task of dealing with this dungeon.
On our way there, I struck up a conversation with Istos.
“It’s been a while since we went to a dungeon together, hasn’t it? When was the last time?”
“About three years ago. We went to a dungeon near a rural village.”
“Ah, yes, that’s right.”
It was a nostalgic memory. Back then, Istos was swamped with work due to a surge of monsters, so I helped. Istos, being the city’s strongest adventurer, is always busy.
While reminiscing, we arrived at the dungeon. It appeared that a commercial store’s basement had transformed into a dungeon.
A little explanation: the contents of this underground storage had yet to vanish. If we destroy the Dungeon Core at the heart of the dungeon, the entire dungeon will disappear, and everything will return to normal. The same should happen with this underground storage once the Dungeon Core is destroyed.
“Are you ready, Nee-san?”
“Yes, let’s go.”
We then began our descent into the dungeon. I wore the same practical pants-style outfit for the forest, and Istos donned a simple leather armor and single-handed sword setup. This sword, incidentally, was a special order made from a dragon’s tooth that I had processed.
Inside the dungeon was a stone-brick labyrinth. We found stairs leading downward as we navigated, defeating goblins and other monsters. This dungeon extended deeper underground.
On the second level, stronger monsters like orcs attacked us, but Istos easily overpowered them with her enhanced physical abilities and swiftly killed the goblins and orcs.
“I’ve been thinking.”
“What’s up?”
“You’ve become strong, haven’t you?”
“Well, I’ve been training.”
Istos responded modestly to my compliment. Despite her strength, she’s quite endearing.
We continued our exploration and found a wooden box on the ground – a naturally occurring treasure chest in the dungeon. While these often contain junk, they sometimes hold magical tomes or magical tools, which can be extremely valuable.
As previously explained, magical tomes with useful spells and magical tools with unique abilities are costly. Therefore, adventurers often dream of striking it rich by finding such items in dungeons.
Inside this chest was a small tool.
“Is this… a dagger?”
“It looks like a stone dagger. It might be a magical tool, so let’s take it.”
Back in the city, some appraisers can determine whether an unassuming tool is magical. While it might be a valuable magical tool, it’s likely just an ordinary dagger. But it’s okay to dream, even if reality often says otherwise.
As we continued, we found more stairs and descended to the third level. The monsters remained the same here, but new traps like pitfalls appeared. This is where my magic came in handy.
My transformation-related magic could reshape the dungeon’s floors and walls, allowing me to block arrows and seal pitfalls. However, there’s a limit – I can’t create holes in the dungeon’s structure, a restriction I’ve tried and failed to overcome.
We made steady progress with my magic neutralizing traps and Istos defeating monsters. Occasionally, we found more treasure chests, rifling through them as we easily made our way to the fourth level. Upon descending, we were greeted by a vast space, different from the stone-brick labyrinth we had been navigating.
