- Chapter 6 - The Silver Wolf Won't Leave (1)
The Silver Wolf Won’t Leave (1)
The next morning. At the entrance of the classroom, a silver guard dog was there.
She is leaning against the wall with her arms crossed and her eyes closed. It’s a picture-perfect look. Her silver hair is translucent in the morning sun, shining white, and her silver ears don’t show a single twitch. She looks like she might be sleeping.
But the exact moment I turned the corner of the hallway, her ears gave a sharp bounce.
Before opening her eyes, her nose twitches here and there.
It looks like she detected me by my smell rather than a sound. Her patrol range is huge.
“…Good morning, Master.”
Her golden eyes slowly open. The exact moment she spotted me, her flattened ears stand straight up, and her tail gives a single big wag.
It was like a system switching completely to active mode.
I was about to say good morning back, but I look at the surroundings. The students who are walking to school stop their feet and are staring right at us. They have faces that say, “What business does one of the prettiest girls in the school have with that bullied kid Eldi?”
“Lyco, you don’t need to lie in wait in front of the classroom. You’re standing out like crazy.”
“Not lying in wait. Picking you up.”
A trace of feeling bad about it, zero.
The exact moment we pulled off our reunion across a thousand years, our old master-servant relationship is coming back at full throttle.
—
First period class started.
My seat is around the middle by the window. Lyco’s seat is in the back by the window. Normally, there is some distance.
But the exact moment the chime rang, a silver shadow slid over without a sound and stood right next to me.
Distance, about one meter. She doesn’t move a single bit.
Break time for second period. Same thing.
Break time for third period. Same thing.
Break time for fourth period. Same thing.
The pattern is established. When the chime rings, she gets up from her seat, moves to the side of my seat without a word, and when the next chime rings, she returns to her seat without a word. Are you a precision machine?
When I got up to go to the bathroom, she was waiting outside the door.
“Lyco, don’t wait in front of the bathroom.”
“…I have a duty to check Master’s safety.”
This isn’t a battlefield from a thousand years ago. It’s a bathroom at a modern school. There are only toilets.
“What’s up with Miss Lycolegis all of a sudden?”
“She’s totally stuck to Eldi.”
“Those guys didn’t say a single word to each other before, right?”
The whispering voices stab into my back.
Without standing out, quietly—that rule is in pieces by just the second day.
—
Lunch break.
The exact moment I lifted my waist thinking I would buy some bread at the cafeteria, two lunch boxes were placed right in front of my eyes with a soft thud.
Lyco is sitting in the seat without a word.
One is Lyco’s portion. The other has a neat chopstick sleeve attached. It is clearly for me.
“…When did you make this?”
“Four o’clock.”
“Four o’clock in the morning?”
“Master loves meat. I remember.”
School started before eight. That means she was preparing it since more than four hours ago.
I should be grateful. Normally.
I opened the lid.
It was meat.
Meat, meat, meat.
Chicken teriyaki took over the left half, simmered beef with ginger occupied the right half, and pork ginger fry filled up the remaining gap. A complete territorial division by three types of meat. No gaps. No truce line.
What about vegetables? There are two cherry tomatoes. They are just stuck on the very peak of the meat mountain like flags.
This isn’t a lunch box. It’s a fortress of meat.
The person herself says she matched it to my favorite foods. But she definitely packed the things she wanted to eat herself. She is way too honest with her beastman appetite.
I took a bite.
It’s delicious. It’s so delicious it’s almost frustrating.
The sweet and savory sauce of the teriyaki is perfect. The ginger in the simmered beef has a sharp kick to it, and the savory smell of the soy sauce from the pork fry passes through my nose. A careful base flavor is put into every single meat, and her cooking skills are definitely real, unchanged since a thousand years ago.
The look is violent, but the taste is delicate. The gap is amazing.
While eating my way through it, I noticed a look.
Lyco isn’t touching her own lunch box with her chopsticks, and she is just staring over here.
Rather than a wolf, she is completely a dog. A dog watching over its owner eating food. Her tail is wagging back and forth, big and slow.
“Lyco, you eat too.”
“I prefer watching Master eat.”
“It tastes better if we eat together, right?”
“An order?”
“Let’s go with it being an order.”
“…If it’s an order, I have no choice.”
This “If it’s an order, I have no choice” is a magic phrase. Lyco is bad at doing things on her own initiative, but when she sandwiches the format of “Master’s order” in between, she starts moving smoothly all of a sudden.
She reluctantly started moving her chopsticks. But her stare doesn’t leave this side.
Chew, chew. Peek. Chew, chew. Peek.
She looks while eating. She eats while looking.
As expected, she is completely a dog.
—
Around the time we finished eating our lunch boxes.
A few male students with smirking faces came close. They are the members of Gareth’s followers. Gareth himself hasn’t been able to come near me since that pressure from the other day. But the lackeys are slow to update the situation.
“Hey, hey, Eldi, you got close with Miss Lycolegis all of a sudden, huh.”
“Are you guys going out or something?”
A vulgar laugh.
Before I could answer, Lyco moved.
Without a word, she wrapped her own arm around my right arm. A posture of close contact.
Her silver hair touches my shoulder, and a slightly high body temperature comes through the uniform.
“It is fine to have that understanding.”
A serious face. Not a single piece of shyness. A tone of voice like she is reading out a weather forecast.
Wait, is that so?
The one who got confused wasn’t the guys who were teasing us, but me.
The Lyco from a thousand years ago didn’t do this kind of thing. Always half a step behind. Quiet. Her sense of distance was a steel wall. That same Lyco is crossing arms and throwing out a couple declaration.
What happened over the thousand years? No, what has to happen for things to turn out like this?
The male students flinched for a split second, then went right back to vulgar laughs.
“Seriously? Eldi is?”
“No way, he’s an F-rank small fry, you know?”
One person stretched out his hand. He tries to grab my arm.
“Eldi, come over here for a second. Let me hear the sto—”
The air changed.
An illusion like the temperature dropped by five degrees. Sound gets far away.
Lyco’s eyes are narrowing down in a smooth movement.
Bloodlust.
And it isn’t any half-baked thing either. The pressure I showed against Gareth was a threat that pressed down with a “difference in rank.” The thing Lyco is releasing right now is something much more primitive and much more direct—a declaration that says, “I am going to load magic power and bite you to death.”
The hand that started to stretch out freezes in mid-air.
The color drains from the faces of the male students all at once.
Lyco doesn’t say anything. She is just staring fixedly.
Three seconds.
The male students backed away as if they got blasted, and they ran away while tangling up with each other. One person is letting out a scream after hitting his foot against the corner of a desk.
Hey, that isn’t the kind of item you use against a classmate. You had the exact same eyes as when you were hunting the head of an enemy general in your past life, though.
But the exact moment Lyco faced toward me.
Her amber eyes soften up with a soft look, her silver ears stand straight up, and her tail started to wag back and forth.
The predator that was releasing bloodlust just three seconds ago is back to a loyal dog in an instant.
This gap. What am I supposed to do with it.
The classmates around us have turned into stone statues.
We are standing out badly like crazy, you know.
Where in the world did my peaceful school life go…
