Episode 32: The Reason She Wears a Randoseru
Hand in hand with Hime, we walk along the school route.
Since her stride is small, I adjust my pace to match hers.
Come to think of it, this is my first time holding hands with a girl… but since Hime is still a child, even someone like me, who isn’t used to being around girls, didn’t feel too nervous.
Her tiny hands squeeze mine gently.
It was a situation correctly befitting the innocent and childlike expression being made.
“Yohei-kun, your hands are so big. Holding them makes me feel really safe.”
“Really? I think they’re pretty average in size, but if that’s how you feel, then I’m glad.”
“Yes! Maybe because you have such a big heart, your hands feel bigger to me as well.”
…She really is a good kid.
Her honest words, free of flattery or ulterior motives, tenderly warms up my heart.
As I thought, talking to her always puts me at ease.
And it seems like me, Hime feels the same way about me as well.
“It’s such nice weather today. I love sunny days, so days like this makes me really happy.”
“By the way, did you sleep well? Yohei-kun’s sleeping face is cute, but I don’t think sleeping during class is a good thing. You might end up like my elder sister you know?”
“There was also some homework assigned—were you able to finish it too? If anything was difficult, you can ask me! At least, I’m pretty good at studying.”
The conversation never stops.
It’s like she has a never-ending list of things she wants to ask me.
Thanks to her, what’s usually a dull and tedious commute felt bright and enjoyable.
“Um, Yohei-kun, do you always walk and commute to school?”
While we were on our way, suddenly I got asked the following question. In response, I explained how my house is within walking distance and that it was one of the reasons I chose this school.
And since we’re already on the topic, I decide to ask something I’ve been curious about as well.
“Hime, do you always take a car to school?”
“Yes. Our house is a little far… I could technically get here by taking multiple buses, but my elder sister is a sleepyhead and likes to stay in bed until the last minute. So we have a car take us instead.”
Makes sense. Given how sloppy Sei-san is, a car would definitely be more convenient.
“How far is your house?”
“About thirty minutes by car. It’s not super far, but with my stamina, walking would be a bit tough.”
[Tl: 30 mins by car is not far? Bruh… Even if I take 40kmph for car, that’s already 20kms. ~12.5 miles.]
That makes sense.
Even though she adorns an air of maturity near her, in reality, Hime is still only eight years old. Even her height barely reaches my chest, so commuting on foot would take quite a while.
“Also, my randoseru is actually pretty heavy.”
[Tl notes: Randoseru = Backpack for Kids.]
Oh, right. That’s something I’ve been wondering about too.
“Speaking of which, why do you bring a randoseru with yourself?”
Technically, Hime is a high school student.
And yet, she comes to school wearing a randoseru.
Ever since I first met her, I’ve been secretly curious about why she’s the only one commuting with a randoseru.
“If it’s heavy, wouldn’t a lighter backpack be better?”
“…Because.”
For once, Hime pouts slightly, her lips forming a tiny sulk.
Looking dissatisfied, but incredibly adorable, she continues:
“I think randoseru are cute! I can only wear one at this age… so even if it’s a little heavy, I still want to use it.”
That’s rare.
Hime actually looks a bit embarrassed.
“I-I know… Childish things don’t really suit me, right?”
Arre?
So Hime worries about those stuff too?
It’s true that she has a composed and mature aura around her. But that doesn’t mean cute, childlike items don’t suit her.
After all, no matter how you look at her, Hime’s appearance is undeniably of an adorable little girl.
“Nope, nope, it really suits you. And I really think you look cute with it.”
That’s why, I decide to tell her honestly.
There was no flattery at all.
Because I see her as a kid, I feel that even more strongly.
And upon hearing my words…
“C-Cute?!”
Her face turns bright red as she breaks into a beaming smile.
“Tha—that’s… ehehe♪ Geez, Yohei-kun. If you say such sweet things like this, I have no choice but to be your little sister at all cost now. From now on and beyond, I will be in your care forever!”
However, that logic seems a bit off though.
Well, since Hime seems happy about it, so there’s no need to correct her—–.
