- Chapter 4 - Kaguya Sakashita’s Impure Proposal (1)
Kaguya Sakashita’s Impure Proposal (1)
Kaguya Sakashita.
If someone asked anyone in our school who is the most beautiful girl in our school, her name would be the answer.
She has distinctive long black hair and can often be found reading books in the library.
After she enrolled into our school, there are always people with ulterior motives coming to the library.
As a former library committee member, I have seen her repeatedly drive away those bothersome boys with an annoyed expression on her face.
I’ve never heard her dating anyone in particular.
She probably values books more than romance. Or perhaps she might not be interested in real people at all.
She is a very cold person. While she’s never been called something like the ‘Ice Queen’ like in manga, that kind of character fits her perfectly.
“A rather gloomy person has appeared.”
At first, I didn’t realize she’s talking about me.
“Please don’t ignore me.”
Even when her voice gets closer, I thought that she’s just talking to herself.
“Haruki Ogura, can you hear me?”
“…eh?”
I look up.
Kaguya Sakashita, the most beautiful girl in our school is looking at me with a discontented look on her face.
“Did something bad happen?”
For a moment, I’m stunned.
Many questions come to mind. Such as why is she talking to me? or how does she know my name?
However, the only word that comes out of my mouth is one confused word.
“…what?”
She sighs.
Then she sits down in the seat next to me and smiles.
“If it’s alright with you, I can offer you some advice.”
“…why?”
I asked so dumbfoundedly.
She looks at me with a puzzled expression on her face.
“I think anyone would offer to help if they saw a classmate with such a gloomy expression on their face.”
For a moment, I feel like she’s acting like Yua.
‘I can’t ignore someone in trouble.’
With a slightly embarrassed smile, she extends a hand.
I really like her for being so kind to others.
“Why are you crying? Please stop. If someone sees you like this, they might misunderstand and think that I’m the one causing trouble.”
“…I’m sorry.”
Before I knew it, tears are running down my cheeks.
Quickly, I wipe away those tears.
To calm myself down, I bite my lip as hard as I can and somehow managed to force a smile.
“Sakashita-san, you’re nicer than I expected.”
“Nicer than expected? That’s a rude way to put it. There are hardly any people as kind as I am.”
She’s really different from the impression I have of her.
I have an image of Kaguya Sakashita-san as a cold person with no interest in others.
It wasn’t just because of the rumours, I even saw her treating others so coldly with my own eyes.
However, when I think about it, it makes sense.
At that time, she was being hit on by strangers while she was reading.
Anyone would be annoyed in that situation.
I had no interest in Sakashita-san at all.
To be honest, my eyes were only on Yua.
So it’s only after talking to her that I realized.
The real Sakashita-san is actually a kind person.
“I’m sorry. I misunderstood you, Sakashita-san.”
“Misunderstood, you say…well embarrassingly, I hear that quite often.”
She smiles shyly.
Sakashita-san innocently closes the distance between us with a cheerful demeanour.
“Well then, let’s get back to the topic.”
I turn my face away from her.
“Don’t worry. I’m tight-lipped.”
She said so confidently.
“After all, I have zero friends! I don’t have anyone to talk to!”
“…Is that something to brag about?”
“I thought it might make you feel more relatable.”
I actually have friends, you know?
Instead of making a light hearted remark, I laugh.
It’s a genuine laugh. It feels like it’s been a long time since I’ve had it.
“Finally, you’re smiling.”
Sakashita-san said so.
“You don’t have to force yourself to talk to me. It’s just that, well, I’m worried.”
Her beautiful eyes, hidden beneath long eyelashes, are gazing straight at me.
“If you need to talk, I’m here for you. I might not say anything particularly clever, but I’ve read a lot of books, so I can say things that sound smart!”
…ah, this is not good.
I’ve heard that people become more susceptible to kindness when they’re feeling weak.
That’s exactly how I feel right now.
“…Don’t laugh.”
“I won’t laugh.”
Honestly, I can’t think very clearly.
I’ve been feeling nauseous since this morning.
I want to feel better.
At first, I was planning to endure it all alone.
But when I look at Sakashita-san, it’s impossible…
“I’ve had my heart broken recently.”
The words came out of my mouth so easily.
Sakashita-san’s mouth dropped open in surprise, and for a moment, she looked estatic.
“I’m so sorry!”
Before I can ask why she looked so estatic, she continues.
“Umm, this is what you call ‘love talk’, right?”
“…in a broad sense, yes.”
I answer with confusion.
She slaps her own cheeks, unable to hide her hoy, and says,
“I’ll explain to you, I have absolutely zero friends. Because of that, I long for friend-like events like this. Love talk is the epitome of that. I fully understand that it’s rude, but the thought that love talk might start made me smile against my will.”
She said so incredibly fast.
Seeing my astonishment, she clears her throat.
It’s as if she’s trying to cover up her excitement.
“Did you have a fight with Niimi Yua?”
Then with a serious expression on her face, she continues,
“You’re wondering how I knew, right? To put it simply, Ogura-kun, you’re famous. Stories about who is dating whom will inevitably reach you, whether you want to hear them or not.”
Sakshita-san’s explanation makes sense to me.
I also know a lot of people who likes to gossip about that kind of things.
“No, it’s not like I’m dating Yua or anything like that. We didn’t even have a fight.”
“Wait a moment!”
She suddenly raised her voice.
“I hate to say it myself, but I have good deductive skills. Given that much information…ah, I’m sorry. It’s probably too late.”
I wonder what she’s talking about.
“So, in other words, you saw Yua Niimi got close with someone else, didn’t you?”
