- Chapter 29 - I Will Never Forgive You
I Will Never Forgive You
Kaguya’s POV
Lunch break.
As I’m waiting for Haruki-san at our usual spot, I hear the sound of an ambulance.
And then—
I see Haruki-san sitting in a hospital bed.
He is wearing a light blue hospital gown and has a bandage wrapped around his head.
With a tight feeling in my chest, like my heart is being squeezed, I approach Haruki-san.
“Kaguya, you’re here.”
Haruki-san said so, smiling shyly.
I sit on the round chair next to the bed and look at him.
“……”
I’m at a loss for words.
It seems that he is okay.
But seeing him lying down in a hospital bed makes me feel really scared.
“The nurse in the infirmary was just overreacting.”
Haruki-san said so with a troubled expression on his face.
“They called an ambulance, and then I had to go through about two hours of tests. It was just a minor head injury.”
I immediately realize that he is lying.
“…are you okay?”
“Yeah, the tests show nothing serious. Sorry for making you worry.”
I start to think.
Haruki-san mentioned about the nurse in the infirmary. The class he was in just before the ambulance was called was an English class.
It’s likely he left class during the lesson. Why?
Haruki-san looks just fine—actually, he seems brighter than usual. His injury doesn’t seem that serious.
However, Haruki-san isn’t part of the health committee, so he might have accompanied someone to the nurse’s office?
It’s likely the person he was accompanying was Yua-san.
Assuming an incident occurred when they went to the nurse’s office together—
“Kaguya.”
I’m startled when Haruki-san calls me and I force a smile on my face.
I might have looked really scared just now.
“What is it?”
Haruki-san has a troubled expression on his face.
Eventually, he lets out a sigh, looks up, and says to me,
“Yua has nothing to do with this.”
I instinctively put my hand behind my back.
“I’ll be honest. I know I can’t hide anything from you, Kaguya.”
I clench my fist tightly.
I feel like I’m going crazy with anger.
“This injury is the result of my own satisfaction. Yua isn’t the one to blame. It’s my own fault. That’s all.”
I take a deep breath to calm myself.
Then, I hold Haruki-san’s hand.
“I’m not going to ask any questions. I trust you, Haruki-san.”
I’ve read in a book before that anger peaks in seven seconds.
After that, it will gradually fade away, and I’ll eventually be able to calm down.
“But I feel a little lonely.”
“…I’m sorry.”
I’m touching someone I love dearly. It makes me really happy.
The seven seconds have passed. I hold myself back from acting impulsively.
However—
“Will you be able to come to school tomorrow?”
“Of course. I should be able to go home by evening.”
—I will never forgive you.
“Do you have anything in mind for tomorrow’s lunch?”
“Hmm, it’s hard to decide when asked suddenly.”
“Since you’ve lost blood, how about stir-fried liver and chives which is rich in iron?”
“Well then, I’ll go with that.”
“Got it! Leave it to me!”
She has hurt Haruki-san again.
Not just emotionally, but physically as well.
“Is there anything else you need?”
A pest that parasites Haruki-san.
An existence that should be exterminated immediately.
“On the other hand, how about you, Kaguya?”
“Me?”
“Yeah, I’ve been helped a lot by you. I feel kind of bad. Is there anything in mind that you want from me?”
“Hmm, well…”
Where is that person now?
Did she leave Haruki-san and go home?
No, that’s impossible.
She’s probably just going away for a while, like going to the restroom or something.
I’m sure she would want to stay with Haruki-san all day today.
Something terrible must have happened in the past. An incident related to it occurred today.
My beloved Haruki-san resolved it and their awkward relationship is finally repaired.
If it were me, I would want to stay close to him for at least three days.
—footsteps.
Alright, I’ve made up my mind.
“Then, what about a kiss?”
“…right here?”
I won’t do anything that makes Haruki-san suffer.
I just have to make sure that pest goes to hell.
“I’m sorry! If it’s a bother, you can definitely refuse!”
I intentionally raised my voice.
“It’s okay. I was just surprised because it was so sudden. That’s all.”
“…then, please close your eyes.”
Haruki-san looks toward the entrance.
He’s clearly concerned about Yua-san.
“Haruki-san.”
I place my hands gently on his cheeks and gaze into his eyes.
It’s okay. I’m calm. I understand that Haruki-san still has Yua-san in his heart.
I don’t think I can overwrite those years of relationship in just a few days.
However, I need to act proactively.
Because, if Haruki-san stays with that pest, it will bring nothing but suffering to Haruki-san.
I absolutely can’t let that happen.
I’m the only one who can save him.
“…excuse me.”
I look at his lips and slowly lean in.
At that moment—
“Oh? Sakashita-san! You’re here!”
Instead of clicking my tongue, I bite my lip.
“…hello, Yua-san.”
When I turn around, I know immediately.
All my guesses are right.
“Haru-kun is really loved, isn’t he? The class just ended and Sakashita-san is already here.”
Oh, how annoying.
I can tell from her awkward smile. She must have heard my voice. She must have seen us gazing at each other.
If it were her from yesterday, she would have looked away.
There’s no need to think about why she changed her mind.
“Sakashita-san, did you hear about what happened?”
“Yes, it was a very unfortunate accident.”
That’s convenient.
It’s my intention from the beginning.
“Haru-kun has always been clumsy.”
“I see. Should I start carrying bandages and such from tomorrow?”
“Yeah, that might be a good idea.”
She stands next to me.
“Yua-san, since when have you been here?”
“Since the beginning, I suppose. I watched Haru-kun get hurt.”
Our eyes meet.
“Hey, Sakashita-san.”
“…what is it?”
It seems like we understand each other.
“What do you like about Haru-kun?”
“Wait. Let’s not talk about that while I’m here.”
“Everything. I love everything about Haruki-san, and each day, I feel like I’m falling more and more in love with Haruki-san.”
Excellent.
I accept the challenge.
“I’m sure I’ll like him even more tomorrow.”
I glance at Haruki-san.
Yes! He’s blushing. I’m so happy.
“Hmm, I see.”
Yua-san looks at Haruki-san.
Then, she lightly pushes her bangs aside and says,
“You two are so in love with each other.”
“…please, just shut up.”
“Haha, Haru-kun is so embarrassed.”
…did she just emphasize her forehead?
Haruki-san is also unusually flustered…could it be?
“Sakashita-san, what are you going to do after this?”
“I’m planning to chat with Haruki-san for a while and then go home.”
She’s so disgusting. I can’t believe it.
“What about you, Yua-san?”
“Well, I think Haru-kun’s parents will arrive in the evening, so I plan to go home with them together by car.”
“I see. So you two are really close with each other’s families.”
“Yeah. Our homes are close.”
Even though she betrayed Haruki-san.
Even though she has hurt Haruki-san over and over again.
“How about joining us, Sakashita-san?”
“It’s fine. I don’t plan to stay out late.”
No, I can’t let my expression show any more.
I have to hold it in. I’m in front of Haruki-san, after all.
Then—
After chatting for about ten minutes with the three of them, I leave the hospital room reluctantly.
Because…I was about to lose my mind.
If I had stayed with Yua-san a bit longer, I don’t know what I might do.
(…next, social studies field trip)
I go straight home and head to the basement.
Once again, there are more holes in the desk.
