This is my first time, so please go easy on me.
Mizuki and I entered the building from the pool. Since there was some time before the bedtime roll call, we decided to visit the souvenir shop in the basement.
“Ao-kun, have you bought any souvenirs?”
“Yeah, I did. Like this one…”
“Mustard… it looks spicy.”
“Are you not good with spicy food, Mizuki?”
“Yes, I can’t handle it. Even small things like kimchi or mentaiko are too spicy for me.”
It was the first time I learned that Mizuki didn’t like spicy food. Come to think of it, I didn’t know her favorite or least favorite foods.
Knowing her preferences could help me decide what to make for her in the future if I ever make her lunch.
“By the way, what’s your favorite food?”
“I like omurice and cheesecake. How about you, Ao-kun?”
“I like hamburger steak and the miso soup my grandma makes.”
While I don’t have a preference for who makes the hamburger steak, the miso soup my grandma makes is the best.
“Your grandma’s miso soup, Ao-kun…”
She looked a bit troubled.
Did I say something that made her uncomfortable? I only mentioned my favorite foods were hamburger steak and my grandma’s miso soup. What could have caused her trouble in this conversation?
“Mizuki…?”
“Oh, I’m sorry. I like hamburger steak too, it’s delicious.”
Saying this, Mizuki walked towards the store’s exit, and I followed her.
Suddenly, my phone vibrated in my pocket. Looking at the screen, I noticed a message from Kana.
“Mizuki, Kana says she’s coming to our room to play cards. Do you want to join?”
The teacher said it’s not allowed to visit other rooms after the bedtime roll call, but it’s fine until then. With about two hours left until the roll call, Kana decided to come over.
“I’d like to.”
“Alright, let’s go then.”
We took the elevator from the first floor to the room we were staying in. I knocked on the door since I didn’t have the key card with me.
“Oh, you’re here! Come on in.”
“Come on in? This is the boys’ room, though…”
I teased Kana as we entered the room. Mizuki seemed restless and uneasy.
“Ex-excuse me…”
“Mizuki, you’re not visiting your boyfriend’s room, so you can relax more!”
Kana gently placed her hand on Mizuki’s shoulder and gave her a few light pats. Mizuki quickly denied, saying she wasn’t thinking that way.
“Mizuki, you must be tired from standing. Why don’t you sit down? That’s my bed, so feel free to use it.”
As I said that, I took a sip of the milk tea I had just bought.
“F-feel free…”
She muttered softly and slowly sat down on the bed.
“Alright, we’re going to play the King’s Game now!”
“What happened to the card game? Isn’t that a different game?”
“It doesn’t matter. We’ll use the cards for it. Out of the four cards, one will be the joker, and whoever gets it will be the king.”
The rules were simple. Each participant would draw from the four cards—an Ace, a 2, a 3, and a Joker. The person who drew the Joker would become the king and could issue a command like, “Number X and number Y must do Z.”
“I’ve never played the King’s Game before, so please go easy on me.”
Kana chuckled at Mizuki’s comment and reassured her, “Don’t worry, it’s not a serious game. Just relax and enjoy. Now, let’s shuffle the cards—”
“I’ll do it.”
I interrupted Kana before she could finish and took the cards from her. I didn’t trust her not to cheat, and her pouting face confirmed my suspicion that she had something planned.
“Alright, let’s start.”
We each took turns drawing cards in a clockwise direction. I picked last and ended up with a 1, meaning someone else would be the king.
“Who’s the king?”
“That would be me.”
Mizuki showed everyone the Joker card. I felt relieved; Mizuki wouldn’t make anyone do anything too crazy.
“Alright, Mizuki! Anything goes.”
“Anything… well then, Number 1 has to say what they like about Number 2.”
Great, I was Number 1. Now, who was Number 2?
“I’m Number 2! So, Number 1 is Ao, right?”
Kana knew it was me even before I said anything.
“Was it that obvious?”
“Yes, it was. Now, Ao-kun, what do you like about me?”
Her tone was teasing, almost annoying. What did I like about Kana? Despite her teasing, Kana was always there to support me, and being with her was genuinely enjoyable.
“The brightness in your personality.”
“Oh, so Ao likes my bright personality, huh? Thanks! By the way, I like your kindness, Ao.”
“Thanks.”
We collected the cards and shuffled them again for the second round. This time, Kana became the king.
“Alright, Number 1, share a moment when you felt truly happy.”
“I’m Number 1. The happiest moments for me are when I’m with Kana-san, Kouta-kun, and Ao-kun.”
“Aww, what a wonderful thing to say! I love you, Mi-chan!”
Kana hugged Mizuki tightly.
“I love you too, Kana-san.”
“More than Ao?”
“Equally as much.”
Kana, having asked a question that put Mizuki on the spot, started whispering to her about something.
“By the way, Mi-chan, how far have you and Ao gone?”
“K-Kana-san!?”
“Just kidding, you don’t have to say anything you don’t want to. But if Ao is being too timid, just let me know. I’ll help you out.”
“…What about you and Kouta-kun, Kana-san?”
This was Mizuki’s turn to get back at Kana. Usually, it was Kana who did all the asking, but now Mizuki took her chance.
“Well… are you curious?”
“Yes, I am. After all, you’re more experienced in relationships, so I’d like to learn from you.”
“Learn… huh. Well, my relationship with Kouta is probably just as you imagine. Anyway, let’s move on to the next round!”
The King’s Game continued for about twenty more minutes. Mizuki and Kana managed to return to their rooms just in time for the bedtime roll call.
