I feel so at peace when I’m with you.
“Here we are. I wanted to show you this view, Ao-kun.”
After climbing the long stairs, we reached a place with a breathtaking view of the entire town.
“It’s beautiful.”
“Regarding the story I told you earlier about when we saw the stars, you saved me back then, Ao-kun. You changed me, someone who tried to handle everything on her own without relying on anyone. Thank you.”
She looked at him directly and said this with a joyful smile.

“I’m so sleepy…”
All that’s left after the bath is to watch the stars with Mizuki. If I fall asleep now, I’ll break my promise. Well, Mizuki would probably forgive me and suggest we watch them again tomorrow.
As I finished getting ready for bed and wondered what to do next, I heard a knock.
“Ao-kun, I’m out of the bath now. Let’s go to the veranda.”
“Alright, give me a minute.”
Thinking it might be cold, I put on a hooded jacket and opened the sliding door. There stood Mizuki, who had just come out of the bath and in her pajamas.
“Ao-kun…?”
There was something different about Mizuki’s aura, perhaps maybe because she had just bathed.
“S-sorry, you looked so cute that I was mesmerized.”
“R-really…?”
Mizuki blushed and looked down. That gesture was adorable too.
“T-the truth is, I bought these pajamas hoping you would think they were cute. Do you think they suit me?”
She bought them just to hear me call her cute!?
“They suit you perfectly…”
“I’m glad to hear that. Well, shall we go?”
We stepped out to the veranda and looked up at the sky filled with countless stars.
“It’s beautiful… We could never see this from where we live…”
“You’re right, it’s not visible from my home.”
As I gazed at the stars in awe, I noticed how thin her pajamas were.
“Mizuki, you’ll catch a cold. Wear this.”
I took off my hooded jacket and draped it over her shoulders.
“Thank you.”
She held the jacket tightly to keep it from slipping off her shoulders.
Sitting on the veranda, shoulders touching as we watched the stars, felt incredibly comfortable. It made me wish we could stay like this forever.
“Hey, Mizuki, remember when you said there was no point in trying so hard? You mentioned ‘that person.’ Can you tell me who you meant by that?”
At the time, I had a feeling I shouldn’t ask, but my curiosity about her won out, and I decided to ask.
“I was talking about my mother. She’s never really paid attention to me.” she said, a sad expression crossing her face. Yet, she forced a smile, perhaps to keep me from worrying.
“I’ve tried my best to get her to notice me, to make her proud, but she’s never praised me or shown any interest.”
“Does that mean when you said there’s no point in trying, you meant there’s no point if your mom doesn’t acknowledge it?”
“Yes… But after you started praising me, telling me I’ve done well, I realized that my efforts do have meaning.”
“When I’m with you, Ao-kun, I can just be myself.”
It was about a year ago that we started spending more time together after school. Our unusual relationship began because she wanted someone to lean on.
Come to think of it… I wonder when Mizuki started liking me.
“Mizuki, when did you start liking me?”
“At last year’s cultural festival. That’s when I began realizing my feelings for you.”
Was that when I started noticing the frequent touches and closeness? I had sensed the change but didn’t mind it enough to say anything.
“I thought you were cool, Ao-kun, and I was a bit anxious, fearing someone else might take you away.”
“Cool? I’ve never been popular. If anyone should be worried, it’s me. You’ve got lots of admirers.”
From the entrance ceremony, Mizuki had caught the attention of nearly half our class.
“Yes, even though I’ve had admirers, I’ve never found anyone I could truly like. Except for you, Ao-kun.”
Mizuki looked directly at me. In the stillness of the night, the sound of insects was clearly audible.
“Mizuki…”
“Ao-kun…”
We called each other’s names and slowly brought our lips together. Our third kiss was a bit longer. Mizuki gently placed her hand on my back.
After our lips parted, Mizuki hugged me tightly and closed her eyes.
“I feel so at peace when I’m with you. I love you so much.”
“Yeah, I love you too, Mizuki.”
As I gently stroked her head, Mizuki let out a soft laugh.

After saying goodnight to Mizuki and returning to my room, I lay down on the futon and picked up the remote from the table.
Then, I thought I heard Mizuki call my name from beyond the sliding door. When I opened it, there she stood, holding a pillow.
“What’s up?”
“Um, can I sleep with you?”
“S-sleep together…?”
Sleeping together with a girl… isn’t that a problem? Even though we’re dating, sharing a bed seems like a step too far.
“I-is it not okay? It feels a bit lonely sleeping alone in such a big room.”
It is a large room to sleep in alone. I can understand feeling lonely.
“Aren’t you worried?”
“We slept together at your place the other day, didn’t we? So, I thought it would be fine…”
Can I sleep like this? I doubt I’ll get any rest with Mizuki beside me.
“Alright. You can sleep here, but bring your futon.”
“Okay!”
She said happily and brought her futon from her room. It looked difficult for her to lay it out, so I helped a bit.
“Isn’t this a bit close?”
“I put it close because I feel lonely. Is that not okay?”
“No, if that’s what you want, Mizuki.”
“Well, let’s sleep then. Goodnight.”
“Yeah, goodnight.”
Since watching the stars with Mizuki, I had felt lonely when I was alone. But with her next to me, that feeling vanished.
