Chapter 48: Summer Vacation Plans
“Shin-nii, let’s plan our summer vacation!”
“Where’s this coming from? Why are you so hyped up?”
It was a random school day. During lunch break, Runa, the ever-energetic beauty, suddenly appeared out of nowhere.
She sometimes dropped by my classroom, but today her voice was filled with an unusual determination. I could feel everyone’s eyes on us.
Even though things were still awkward because of the Mimi situation, Runa was acting the same as always.
A few days ago, she had said she was planning to talk to Mimi, but it seemed like the X-Day hadn’t come yet. I didn’t get a chance to say it then, but if possible, I wanted to be there when it happened.
“Come on, it’s summer vacation! Summer vacation!”
“…Yeah, I get that. But isn’t it a bit too early to start planning—”
“It’s not too early!”
Bang! Runa slammed her hands on my desk, bringing our faces uncomfortably close.
“Pool tickets might have entry limits, you know? Plus, I want to go to the beach again, and the festivals too!”
I was curious why she was so fired up, so I asked.
“…Were you this excited last year?”
Looking back, I remembered going to festivals and watching fireworks.
But that was about it.
She seemed to enjoy it back then, but she wasn’t this intense about it. Something was definitely up.
“If I make plans before anyone else, Shinji-senpai will prioritize those, you know~.”
Suddenly, Mimi Ogawa popped up from behind me. My breath caught in my throat.
This girl… was she an assassin?
“Could you not sneak up like that, you idiot?”
“Whoa!? Ow! No violence! No violence! Help me, Runa!”
I gave her a light smack on the head, and she exaggeratedly pretended to cry, hiding behind Runa.
“Why are you hiding behind me…? It’s too hot, get away.”
“What? Even you’re against me now!? Come on, we’ve had a heart-to-heart talk and everything~.”
“Mimi, if you keep messing around—”
“Just kidding, just kidding.”
So X-Day had already happened, apparently. That was unexpected.
And somehow, they were now on a first-name basis, calling each other “Runa” and “Mimi.” This was a development I didn’t see coming.
I thought they’d end up hating each other even more, and I’d be stuck in the middle with a stomachache from all the tension…
“Anyway, I can’t let Runa get a head start. I ran here as soon as lunch break started because I knew something was up…”
“…Couldn’t you have just sent a message instead of talking here at school?”
“Tut, tut, tut! Shinji-senpai, you don’t get it. These things are way more fun when you decide them in person!”
I sighed at the ridiculous reason.
But whatever. If the two of them had managed to sort out their tangled relationship, I had nothing more to say. The real issue now was… me.
I knew I was avoiding something obvious. At least that much was clear.
“Following me around like that… it’s annoying, or… I don’t even know.”
“I’ll take that as a compliment.”
“Well, I’m setting the plans first, so deal with it.”
“…Ha? That’s an unacceptable demand. It’s a deal.”
“…………Hmph.”
Apparently, some kind of secret agreement had just been made. I was genuinely surprised.
To say these two had a good relationship would be a joke. If anything, their compatibility was a disaster. It was a complete mystery how this pair of first-years managed to team up so smoothly.
“Alright, let’s hear Shinji-senpai’s schedule and pack it with fun! Let’s fill summer vacation with memories of youth!”
“Loud.”
“Ha! Shinji-senpai just made an annoyed face while saying I’m loud!!”
The hamster was getting way too into this.
Honestly, my idea of a perfect summer vacation was lying around in an air-conditioned room all day. But I knew my opinion wouldn’t matter.
“First stop —the beach!”
“Last time, those bugs ruined it, and you were stuck working, Shinji-senpai.”
“They had their reasons. Just let them be.”
Runa made a suggestion, and Mimi backed her up. Meanwhile, my attempt to defend myself vanished into thin air.
“We need to buy new swimsuits. Last year’s design is just too outdated.”
“Oh! Then I’ll buy one too! Shinji-senpai, do you prefer bikinis? Two-piece? Or maybe the string kind?”
“Why are you asking that in the middle of the classroom? Not that I’d answer outside of class either!”
I couldn’t help but imagine it for a second —Runa and Mimi in swimsuits. Wait, what the hell am I thinking?
I quickly shook the inappropriate thoughts out of my head. But Runa must have sensed what I was thinking because she gave me a sharp glare.
“…Shin-nii, you perv.”
“How is that my fault?!”
“Senpai, men have to apologize even when they’re not wrong. —Right?”
“Ogawa, you just made every guy in the world your enemy.”
Ah, this was just like always. So normal it was almost scary.
“Alright then, let’s go shopping after school! How about the mall by the station?”
“I’m in. Shin-nii agrees too.”
“…So my opinion doesn’t matter, huh?”
It’s true I didn’t have any plans. Might as well give up.
And just like that, our after-school shopping trip was set —to buy swimsuits.
I’d be the only guy there. It was definitely going to be awkward, but the two first-years were so excited that I couldn’t bring myself to ruin the mood.
Also, you two… this is still a classroom.
The looks from my classmates were ice cold, Hinata’s face was blank with confusion, and even the harem group was giving me weird glances.
“…These people really love gossip, huh?”
Mimi whispered into my right ear, her voice tickling my eardrum.
“Don’t worry about them. Let them talk all they want. They’re just sad, boring people.”
Runa’s sharp, cutting words reached my left ear.
“Just hold your head high.”
She gave a little snort of confidence.
The conversation ended there, and we somehow transitioned to lunch. Today, like always, it was Runa’s homemade lunch.
I still didn’t know anything.
