Chapter 43: The Confident Duo
“This is why creeps are the worst. Do you even think about how annoying you are to everyone around you?”
“Ahaha, tough luck, guys. Hmm, or maybe I should call you flies?”
Normally, Runa and Mimi couldn’t stand each other. But right now, they were perfectly in sync.
As for me, I just stood there, frozen. My plan to step in came to a screeching halt.
(…Uh, yeah, okay.)
Runa’s sharp glare and merciless words.
Mimi’s relatively gentle tone, but with stinging insults that cut deep. The guys looked so pitiful that even I felt bad for them. While I stood there overthinking things, they kept going.
“When a girl says no the first time, normal people back off.”
“These guys have zero sense of social cues. Maybe they should take a class in basic manners?”
“That’s probably why they look like guys who can’t get a girlfriend. Ugh, gross.”
The guys clearly hadn’t expected to get roasted this badly.
Confusion, not anger, was written all over their faces. They opened and closed their mouths repeatedly, unable to say anything.
Watching from the side, it was hard to tell who the real victims were here.
“Did you just say their faces look like flies? That’s hilarious, Ichinose-san.”
“I meant they’re as annoying as flies. …But yeah, their faces are kind of fly-like too.”
They must have been really persistent because Runa and Mimi were clearly furious.
Caught up in the bizarre scene, I had completely lost my chance to step in.
(…Yeah, that makes sense.)
First of all, Runa was not the type to get intimidated.
If anything, she’d swat away guys like they were flies or mosquitoes.
Then there was Mimi. She might have been a quiet bookworm in middle school, but now she was a completely different person. When faced with guys hitting on her, she wouldn’t shrink back —she’d play with them and toss them aside without hesitation.
Basically, there was no way either of them would lose to a bunch of pushy guys.
—Rest in peace.
I silently mourned for the guys.
While I stood there, Runa and Mimi seemed to have said all they wanted and were ready to leave. But just then, one of the guys, barely recovering from the humiliation, shouted out in desperation.
“W-Wait, you two! Hold on a second!”
Summer. The first day of beach season. Crowds of people enjoying the sea.
And yet, these guys’ pride had been torn to shreds.
Everyone else was smiling and having fun, but these guys looked like they’d just been hit by a truck.
“What, you still need something?”
Runa said, her voice cold. Mimi, with a sly smile, turned halfway around as well.
The guy who seemed to be their leader stepped forward, veins bulging on his forehead.
“You think you’re all that…?! I’m not letting you get away with this!”
“Thinking you can solve things with violence? That’s childish. Even a kid would know better.”
“Never thought I’d team up with Ichinose-san like this.”
Mimi kept laughing hysterically.
At first, the people around them had tried to avoid the scene, but now that the guys were being mocked so openly, the bystanders were starting to feel sorry for them. They had basically become an audience, watching the drama unfold.
Honestly, if the guys tried anything violent now, they’d probably be stopped immediately.
“—Oh!”
Since I couldn’t just stand by and do nothing, I stepped closer.
Mimi noticed me first. She flashed a grin, completely different from the one she’d shown the guys.
Without an ounce of shame, she waved her arms wildly at me. Stop that.
“Shinji-senpaaai! Help! There are creeps! Perverts! I’m in danger!”
Danger? Yeah, right. I wanted to ask what part of this was a crisis.
Mimi’s over-the-top performance, complete with finger-pointing, was almost laughable.
Runa, of course, wasn’t buying it. And now the furious glares of the guys were all directed at me.
“Oh, Shin-nii, done with work? That was fast.”
“They gave me a break. Probably because they figured I’d have to chase after you two.”
“Hmm, that’s actually kind of thoughtful, isn’t it? Oh, by the way—”
Runa casually moved to stand next to me, crossing her arms.
“Shin-nii, which one of them do you think looks the most like a fly?”
Why would you say that?! I nearly burst out laughing. She really needed to stop.
“Isn’t this ridiculous? They’re hitting on us! It’s just too much.”
“They were like cursed gear that sticks to you no matter how many times you try to shake them off.”
“…Yeah, I feel bad for you, but look at them. They’re as shriveled up as dried plums.”
For the record, I’m the kind of guy who would usually join in on this kind of banter.
At the end of the day, these guys had been pestering Runa and Mimi after they said no. I’d been ready to jump in the moment things got violent. But with all the eyes on them, the guys seemed to have hit their limit with just shouting.
I don’t usually run into guys like this, but honestly, Runa losing her temper is way scarier. There was this one time— No, let’s not go there. Just thinking about it made me shiver.
“…Shin-nii, you just remembered something, didn’t you?”
“Nope, nothing at all. …Don’t say weird things like that.”
Maybe my face gave me away because Runa jabbed her elbow into my side.
“Could you two stop living in your own little world? I’m standing right here.”
“Oh, sorry. I forgot you were there. So, feel free to leave anytime?”
“―Haha! Ichinose-san, you should probably go back before you get a sunburn.”
Even though it was summer, I felt a chill.
No, I was sure I felt a chill.
A scraping sound echoed —the collective sound of me, the guys, and the crowd all taking a step back.
They really were like cats and dogs. Sparks flew between them.
They had just teamed up for a moment, but the gap between them widened again almost immediately.
Meanwhile, I found myself exchanging awkward glances with the guys who had been left behind. Both of us were stuck in an uncomfortable silence —me, because I couldn’t find the right moment to speak, and them, because they didn’t know where to direct their anger anymore.
“Uh… yeah, um, I guess… sorry about everything, including myself.”
I broke the silence with a small bow.
“N-No, it was our fault for being too pushy… I mean, we’re all just on edge because our girlfriends cheated on us or dumped us. So… yeah, good luck, man.”
I felt a bit guilty for getting involved in roasting them earlier.
Sure, their approach wasn’t exactly great, but it seemed like they had their own issues. For Runa and Mimi, though, they were just annoying flies. Not much could be done about that.
While the first-year duo kept arguing behind me, the guys and I somehow slipped into a venting session.
One of them complained about his boss stealing his fiancée right before their wedding.
Another said he found out his girlfriend cheated on him after she stayed out all night following a class reunion.
“Man, I know you’ve got stuff going on too, but don’t keep it all bottled up, okay?”
In the end, they even ended up worrying about me.
After saying goodbye to my new (and very unexpected) group of guy friends, I suddenly felt two hands grab my shoulders —hard. The force made me lose my balance and fall backward.
As I grimaced from the shock, two familiar faces filled my vision. Light brown hair and blonde hair shimmered under the sunlight.
“Shin-nii! Next time, let’s go to the beach, just the two of us! It’s a promise, okay? Deal sealed!”
“Sorry, but nope! Shinji-senpai’s schedule is already booked with me. Please step aside.”
“Wait, wait, wait! What kind of argument are you two having right now?!”

I made it through the busy season.
Sorry for the inconvenience!
