Chapter 05: The Girl Named Runa Ichinose
Let me tell you a bit about Runa Ichinose.
She’s the girl who lives next door and is Hinata Ichinose’s little sister.
She just started high school this spring and is a first-year student.
Hinata, Rika, Runa, and I have all been childhood friends. Our bond has stayed strong over the years.
Since her older brother Hinata is good-looking, naturally, Runa is, too.
Even though it’s only been about a month since the school year started, her name has already spread across the entire school. At this point, there’s probably no one here who doesn’t know the Ichinose siblings.
Her light brown hair —even lighter than Hinata’s— is cut into a neat bob.
Her bright smile is already famous for being incredibly charming.
She got into fashion pretty early and apparently has great style… or so I’ve heard. I wouldn’t know. My idea of homewear is basically sweatpants, and I don’t pay attention to trends. Honestly, Runa doesn’t even need makeup; she looks amazing naturally.
In middle school, she still had a bit of a baby face. But now, with her amber eyes and perfectly balanced features, she’s starting to look more mature. We’re only a year apart, but maybe because we grew up together, I can’t help seeing her in a kind of “little sister” way.
If we weren’t childhood friends, I’d probably be just as smitten with her as the other guys.
Runa Ichinose, the younger sister of the perfect guy, Hinata Ichinose, was just as perfect as her brother.
But saying their sibling relationship was “bad” would be putting it way too mildly.
Thinking back, the Ichinose siblings have been at odds since elementary school. I figured it was just a typical rebellious phase, but apparently, it was something more serious. At this point, it seemed beyond repair.
I once asked Runa about it, and her answer made total sense to me.
“Wishy-washy, or rather, his whole way of thinking is just impossible.”
That’s what she told me.
Basically, she couldn’t stand her brother and his harem of admirers.
As a guy, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little jealous of Hinata. But from Runa’s perspective —especially as his blood-related sister— it made sense that she’d find it disgusting.
…Hinata probably had his own reasons for the way he acted, but who knows.
He wasn’t a bad guy, but it was true he could be indecisive.
As his so-called best friend, I just hoped he wouldn’t get stabbed someday.
“Okay, this should be the class.”
Lost in thought, I finally arrived at the classroom I was looking for.
I peeked inside, and— there she was, surrounded by her friends.
Her desk was close to the hallway, so it wouldn’t be hard to get her attention.
The first-year students had only been in high school for a little over a month. Between clubs, classes, and figuring out friendships, their days were probably super hectic. Especially friendships— those would shape the next three years of their lives. I completely understood why people wanted to befriend Runa.
Thinking back to last year, I gave myself some credit. I worked hard, fending off the groups of girls trying to get close to Hinata. Seriously, I did my best.
As I kept peeking into the classroom, I accidentally made eye contact with one of the girls surrounding Runa.
We didn’t know each other, and since she was a girl, the silence between us felt a little awkward.
Eventually, I decided to break that awkwardness.
“Is Ichinose-san here?”
I asked in a voice just loud enough for her to hear as she stepped closer.
Normally, I’d call her Runa, but since this girl was a stranger, I used her last name to avoid coming off as too familiar or creepy.
“…She’s here. What do you want?”
Her tone was a bit sharp.
I guessed she was used to people calling for Runa like this. After all, Runa had become a school celebrity in just a month. To her friends, this probably felt like another one of those moments —a “Not again” situation. Her protective tone made sense.
She probably thought I was here to bother Runa.
If it had been Hinata asking for Runa, these girls might have been excited.
But for Runa, someone like me was probably not a welcome visitor.
“Uh, Hinata —I mean, Ichinose-san’s brother— asked me to bring her phone.”
I took the phone out of my pocket as I spoke, and the girl’s face lit up with understanding.
Then her eyes sparkled as she exclaimed, “Wait! You’re Hinata-san’s friend?!”
I figured as much. Hinata’s popularity was limitless. Just like that, all her suspicion vanished.
“Runa-chan’s been worried all morning about forgetting her phone!”
“Oh, really? Yeah, Hinata said she was probably worried about it. He had something urgent to do, so he asked me to bring it. Sorry for the sudden interruption.”
“No, no! It’s totally fine!”
I matched her energy with some polite conversation.
Of course, Hinata didn’t have anything urgent going on, but no need to mention that.
“Hey, Runa-chan!”
After I finished explaining, the girl waved Runa over.
Hearing her name, Runa slowly turned her head toward us.
“A friend of your brother brought your phone!”
I’d seen Runa in her school uniform plenty of times, but this was the first time we’d talked at school.
Our eyes met, and her face lit up immediately. She stood up so fast her chair scraped against the floor and hurried over to me.
“Shin-nii! Yay! You brought it for me?!”
“Well, yeah, Hinata asked me to. Also, stop calling me ‘Shin-nii’ —we’re at school.”
“Ehh, it’s fine. That’s just the kind of bond we have!”
The first-year group started buzzing with excitement. Of course they did.
This was exactly what I was trying to avoid by calling her “Ichinose-san.”
I’ve always hated standing out. And yet, Runa didn’t care at all.
Even though I told her we were at school, she just ignored me.
“You know I hate being the center of attention.”
“I know! But you’re still Shin-nii to me.”
“Geez…”
Do they even realize how famous they are? Try being in my shoes for once!
Do you know how many people are going to ask me to introduce them to you guys now?!
Just as I was about to complain more, Runa tilted her head with a curious expression.
Then she stepped closer, leaned in, and whispered softly into my ear.
“If it’s just the two of us, you won’t stand out, right?”
“…That’s not the point. Besides, it’s too late now.”
“I know! But if you care too much, you lose!”
Over Runa’s shoulder, I saw some of the students whispering to each other while glancing our way.
Oh, right. There was something I hadn’t mentioned yet about my relationship with Runa Ichinose.
Maybe because she couldn’t stand her brother Hinata, Runa had grown really attached to me.
Like I was her actual big brother.
