- Chapter 6- Ryuuji\'s past and...
The table was cleared, the food was eaten mainly by both Mika and Ryuuji as they sat facing each other.
Ryuuji decided to tell the story, after having dinner since he knew after hearing it, Mika wouldn’t eat anything, or maybe he too.
Mika was so anxious to know what Ryuuji had to say she ate the serving while choking quite a few times along the way.
Ryuuji was slightly astonished to see the Mika, who generally doesn’t pay much attention to him, being so attentive currently.
“I know it might be slightly disturbing to know someone else’s life story, but I want you to know this, so I can at least justify my wrongdoings and lessen my guilt.”
Mika’s heart clenched, but she was too invested in the person in front to mind such trivial things for now.
With an audible exhale, Ryuuji began to narrate the story, which he had never told anyone before.
“You know, Mika-san, since childhood, I always thought nothing in this world was unfortunate. Whenever bad things happened with my close ones or me, I thought maybe there was a reason behind such occurrence. And coincidently, I didn’t have to face many problems in life to make me realize how this world works. I was such a naive kid.”
His self-mockery, along with the slight smile on his face, made Mika feel her heart leap intensely, but she held her position and didn’t interrupt him.
“But that was until I reached the first year of Junior High.”
Taking a slight pause, Ryuuji leaned his face down before he continued in a low tone yet clearly audible to the only person other than him.
“In junior high, my mother was diagnosed with Chronic illness. This was the first trigger that let me realize this world isn’t all merry and rainbow. Naturally, it required a lot of money to keep her alive since she was in the final stage, and at that time, my father’s business partner cheated on him, and our financial condition collapsed. Such coincidence, isn’t it?”
By that time, Mika wasn’t moving even a bit, like she had become a living statue. Seeing Ryuuji in such pain, even though he was just talking to her, made her incredibly uncomfortable.
She neither responded nor gestured anything. She just wanted to listen to everything today and get to know that she never had an interest in the past.
“That was the second time I became aware of what the word misfortune actually means. Slowly, my mother’s condition worsened, and my relatives backed away in fear that my father would knock on their door for help. Isn’t it strange that the people whom I had such great memories with suddenly turned into just memories?”
With a weak chuckle he rested his back on the wall before he continued.
“Afte that, father has to visit court since he was under the case of debauchery or whatnot which his business partner alleged on him and made it the basis of the reason of the breach. He was getting called by the police, his wife was dying in the hospital, and his son was helplessly asking for donations from the neighborhood.”
Rising from the ground, Ryuuji walked to his closet before he took out a small box that had the word ‘Emergency’ written on it.
Mika’s eyes went red as tears built in them, which she immediately wiped when he wasn’t looking before Ryuuji brought the box forward.
“I collected 30k Yen in this box with the help of my friends. Some of them even stole money from their house, and some gave all their pocket money to contribute as much they could, but when I realized how small that sum was from what I actually needed…I got heartbroken.”
Mika, with her hand slightly trembling, took the box and saw some crumbled bills inside before drops of tears slid down her cheeks as she imagined what Ryuuji must have gone through.
“One of those evenings when I was returning after collecting my donations, two policemen came to get me since the people in the neighborhood complained that I was thieving their money. Police instantly got the evidence, and I was taken to the station.”
With a shocked expression, Mika shot her face toward Ryuuji as she said in a slightly hoarse tone.
“B-But you didn’t robe someone!”
“Those kids who stole money after getting beaten by their parents blamed me and so on. Well, naturally, I wasn’t put into a cell, but I sat all day long in the station with my gaze fixed on the entrance that my father would enter now and save me from here. B-But he never came…”
With a heavy gulp, Ryuuji somehow held himself from shedding as he continued in a slightly hoarse tone.
“…But news arrived that a person identified as Nakumo Takuya had slit his wrist in the bathroom and died on the spot. My father for whom I w-waited so long…. The person I considered the strongest being i-in the w-world…en-ended him.. ”
Blank.
Mika went utterly blank after hearing this part of the story, as she never thought that something like this could happen to Ryuuji’s father.
Fortunately, she had that much sense that she saw the discomfort in Ryuuji’s breathing as the choke cries made his breath clog in his throat.
“R-Ryuuji?!”
She moved toward him before rubbing his back. Running toward the kitchen, she brought a glass of water and helped him drink some of it.
“Thanks, Miku…”
Mika became slightly stunned because he called her by the nickname after what seemed so long, but she didn’t ponder about it for now and helped him regain his composure.
Caressing his back to soothe his breathing, she held his hand unintentionally, which even Ryuuji overlooked as he continued to conclude himself.
“You know Mika-san. I have lost so many people in my life that when I fell in love with you…I just didn’t want to give up whatever happened. Whenever you asked me to go away, or got annoyed with me, I thought that you were shy. But now I realize how wrong I was…”
Mika’s hand suddenly halted on his back as she stared at him wide-eyed. Her inner self screamed to close her ears and run away since she didn’t actually want to hear his following words.
But as Ryuuji mentioned, not everything goes as one wants them to be…
