- Chapter 21: Tomorrow Too, “Mom”
By the time the evening anime program ended, it was already getting dark outside. It was the time generally referred to as dinner time.
“It’s getting dark, but is the time okay?”
I asked Miori while closing the curtains. Rather than asking, I thought she was actually worried about Shuri and finding it hard to leave, so I offered a lifeline.
If she were to have dinner at my place, I would at least consider ordering takeout, but she probably doesn’t intend to. She’s been glancing at the clock repeatedly, and she doesn’t seem like the type to eat dinner at a guy’s house on a first visit.
“Ah, yeah… I guess it’s about time to head home.”
“I said I’d eat at home tonight,” Miori added. Apparently, she seemed to be concerned about dinner time at home.
If she had said from the beginning that she would have dinner at our place, would she have eaten dinner with us? That thought unconsciously welled up inside me. It was just that having her around during this time was comfortable for me as well.
“Shuri, Mom said she’s coming home soon.”
From our conversation, she must have sensed that “Mom” was coming to an end. Since Shuri had a downcast look on her face, I cheerfully called out to her.
My younger sister approached Miori with quick little steps. Then, with that momentum, she collided with her and hugged her waist.
“Eh? Ah… um.”
Miori held onto Shuri, though perplexed. On the other hand, Shuri buried her face in Miori’s stomach, perhaps not wanting to be seen.
Surely, she didn’t want her to go back. I knew that putting it into words would trouble her, but I still wanted to express that feeling. She was a brave little sister.
However, seeing that Shuri made me inexplicably happy. I truly felt that it was good to have Miori come.
“Hey, Shuri. What do you say to thank you for playing with me all day today?”
When I said that, Shuri slightly pulled her face away from Miori’s belly and looked up at her.
“Playing with mom was fun… thank you.”
And then, she expressed her gratitude with a hint of hesitation.
“…Yeah. If Shuri-chan had fun, then I’m happy too, alright?”
Miori smiled softly, wrapping her arms around Shuri’s back as she clung to her. Then, she gently patted Shuri’s small head.
“Um… um…”
Shuri glanced up at Miori, then lowered her eyes again and spoke in a hesitant voice.
I thought to myself that it was the first time I had seen such a little sister, and I watched the two of them. I couldn’t even begin to imagine what my sister was going to say.
“When we meet next time…”
“Hmm? What is it?”
“‘Mom’… can I call you that?”
A voice that sounds embarrassed, but also anxious.
At Shuri’s earnest request, Miori was taken aback. This was also a question from my younger sister, asking if she would once again play the role of “mom.”
I silently watched the scene, wondering how Miori would respond.
If I look at today’s Shuri, it’s easy to imagine how much she enjoyed her time with Miori. It would have been impossible for me to make my sister that happy.
If possible, I want her to continue from now on, but that’s up to her will. As for me, if she’s hesitating, I was planning to treat her to crepes or anything else and ask her to continue.
However, Miori nodded slightly without looking in my direction.
“Yeah… that’s fine.”
It was a very gentle voice. It was so full of compassion that it almost reminded one of the Virgin Mary or something.
I heard a voice that warmed my heart just by listening to it from the side for the first time in my life. Even though it was the first time I heard it, I felt a sense of nostalgia somewhere in my heart. It was a mysterious voice.
“Ah…!”
In response to that answer, my sister’s face lit up even more, and she buried her face in Miori’s belly again. She tightly hugged Shuri like that and patted her head.
That scene is just like a daughter who is being spoiled by her mother.
“Mom…! Mom, mom!”
As if savoring it, my sister utters those words.
After seeing that figure, I felt something tugging at my heart.
I was so busy just getting through my daily routine that I didn’t realize it, but perhaps, all along, Shuri had been seeking her mother somewhere deep down──that’s how she felt.
I couldn’t help but feel disappointed in myself. I’ve been with my sister ever since she was born, but I couldn’t even notice something like that. I’m a failure as an older brother.
“Shuri, Mom has to go home too, so don’t cause too much trouble, okay?”
“Yeah!”
Shuri looked up at Miori with a smile.
“Mom, when are you coming next?”
At my sister’s question, I inwardly groaned.
I just said not to bother her, but isn’t that another bothersome question? Even coming once a week is too much, I think, and then──
“What should I do… Isaki-kun, do you have any plans for tomorrow?”
Miori was still smiling as she looked at me and confirmed the plans for tomorrow.
“Huh? No, nothing, but…”
Basically, I don’t have plans for the weekends. Even if I do, it’s usually just taking Shuri out to have some fun. That’s all I have for weekend plans.
I wonder if this is okay for a high school student, but since I can’t schedule anything else, it can’t be helped.
“Well then, should I come again tomorrow? Is that okay?”
“Eh?! Of course, it helps us, but… are you sure it’s okay for you?”
“Yeah. Believe it or not, I’m actually pretty free on weekends.”
Miori smiled awkwardly and tilted her head slightly.
I never thought there would be a classmate in this world who would go out of her way to babysit just because she had free time on weekends. This girl, Imiya Miori, might be a reincarnation of an angel or something. It makes me think that way.
“Shuri, that’s great! Mom said she’ll come again tomorrow!”
“Wow! Yay! Mom, thank you!”
My sister’s face lit up as if to say, “Is this enough?” and she hugged “Mom” once more.
In the end, “Mom” was freed from Shuri ten minutes later.
