The corpses of the residents of Peace Town filled the streets. All of the bodies showed signs of having been savagely slashed, and the women and children were lying in a state of unrelenting misery. The buildings had been burned in many areas, and the dragon spread its wings again, thinking that it was too late to do anything about the fire.
He was more worried about everyone at the ranch than about the person who had caused this massacre. It was the first time he had ever been impatient with another person’s livelihood.
The ranch was only a few minutes away, and the dragon took flight in a hurry. He raced across the plains with an acceleration that could gouge the grass and trees, and found a fenced-in building near the forest. The roof was on fire, just like the town, and it was roaring with the wind.
Landing inside the fence, the dragon looked around, wondering if he was too late. As he tried to find the old man, his daughter, and the young man he saved by using his sense of smell to its fullest, his face contorted.
“Growl…”
Growling with anger, the dragon went to the culprit who was probably behind the pigsty. There stood the young man who had saved him previously, smiling with satisfaction as he was covered in blood. At his feet, the daughter of the rancher, who must have been stabbed many times, lay dead with a despairing look on her face.
“…Oh, you’re late.”
The young man greeted the dragon in a carefree manner. He was smiling calmly with his hands outstretched as if nothing had even happened. The dragon was not sure if the young man was pretending to be normal or if that’s just who he truly was. The only thing the dragon know for sure is that he is an indiscriminate murderer who has killed everyone in this town.
In his right hand, he was holding a bloody weapon, and the dragon didn’t know how many times he had stabbed someone with it, but the blade looked fragile. And sure enough, it was even slightly bent towards the sharp end.
“I have no more use for this town. Let’s go to another land together. Just the two of us.”
The dragon felt a definite desire to kill the young man who was speaking to him so familiarly. Where did he get this luxury from after causing such a tragedy? How could he calm down after killing the kind people who had accepted him with their own hands?
“It’s a reunion on the road, you’re already my companion after all.”
The young man seemed to have no intention of harming the dragon. Was it because he was his companion, or was it because he thought he was the one who had led him to this point? It was too selfish, too unforgivable. The dragon opened its mouth, which was lined with hundreds of sharp fangs, and uttered a low voice while radiating obvious murderous intent at the approaching young man.
“———I’m not going to let you live… you foolish child of man.”
The young man backed away from the mysterious voice that echoed in his brain. It was a legitimate reaction, as he did not expect the dragon to speak the language of man at all. The young man was his benefactor, and he must repay him. But he had already paid his debt when he brought the fallen man to this town. But why didn’t he leave this town?
It was because it was comfortable.
It was a simple answer.
Just being around the young man was enough to make the dragon forget his ferocious instincts.
And yet, he was betrayed completely by that very man.
All the people he cared about was killed, and the utopia he had tried to protect was slowly burning down.
The young man who was the main culprit of this situation must be punished with a suitable death, or else he wouldn’t feel good about it.
The dragon opened its mouth wide over the threatening young man’s head and took him into his mouth. Convinced that he could not resist, the young man seemed to be begging for his life, but the dragon did not listen to his pleas and ate him up completely.
He left only the young man’s legs on the ground, but it wouldn’t be a problem if he ate only the vital upper half of his body. He chewed on the still screaming young man to make sure he would stop breathing. He savoured it over and over again. It tasted like various other people’s blood mixed with his clothes and skin, but he didn’t stop with that and continued to cut off the flesh within his mouth.
Then after a while, he swallowed the young man, who lay completely lifeless inside his mouth.
“It’s a lie… right?”
I said, finding it hard to believe. No, in a world this big, anything can happen anywhere. I just don’t understand how this story is connected to my father. I can’t help but wonder if it really has anything to do with him at all.
Master Raquel leaned forward, indicating that she hadn’t finished her story yet.
“That dragon, he is your father.”
“———!!?”
He was once exposed to a magical tool called the Mimicry Ring, which allows one to be reborn in the form one desires. The condition was that the soul of the target had to be placed inside of one’s body, and the condition had been fulfilled when he ate the young man. The dragon’s secret desire to take a human form had also affected the mimicry ring, and so the dragon managed to take a humanoid form, in the form of the young man he had just eaten alive.
Since then, the dragon had continued his journey as a murderer who terrorized the world in the form of a young man named Noah. The result of eating this so called ‘Noah’ was that he obtained the knowledge and experience of the person himself, and perhaps because of this, the dragon was able to gain enough common sense to blend in with human society afterwards.
However, that doesn’t mean that his body has done enough good to enjoy happiness.
This new life was just a series of sad events for the dragon.
A life of hiding and fighting followed his entire journey. As a murderer, Noah’s infamy had spread to almost every corner of the world, and it would take a long time for him to find a place where he could finally live in peace. Then one day, the dragon who became a human finally found a place to live that he could call his home after decades of waiting for peace.
A country at the southern tip of the Azubel continent.
In a remote village, he met a woman and started a family.
“And that is how you were born.”
The dragon remembered and named the time when he used to spread his wings and fly in the sky under the sun.
“Helios the Sun”.
