SIDE Tachibana Mizuri
Haruko consulted with Kirigakure-sensei about me.
Our homeroom teacher Kirigakure-sensei seemed quite busy, and she would only have time to listen on Friday weekend.
That day happened to be Haruko’s last day of school.
Despite the cold sky, there were no clouds and it was pleasantly clear from morning.
“Today I’ll say goodbye to Mizuri too, it’ll be lonely… but we can meet again, right?”
Haruko said lonely things in the morning.
But her face had its usual grinning expression.
“Yeah, of course we can meet again. Besides, it’s still morning, right?”
“That’s right. Then let’s enjoy today to the fullest! And today Mizuri will take her first step toward happiness!”
“Yeah, that’s right. After school.”
“I can’t go, but I’m sure it’ll be fine.”
At lunch, the whole class had a farewell party for Haruko, and she was grandly celebrated by everyone.
The way she scratched her cheek looking embarrassed was memorable. I was laughing next to her too, and that was my last happy memory of elementary school.
Such happy times end quickly.
Before I knew it, it was after school.
I was told to meet with Kirigakure-sensei in the reception room.
Haruko apparently wanted to attend, but Kirigakure-sensei stopped that.
It was because it touched on family circumstances, a very sensitive issue.
Haruko was very dissatisfied about that, but I thought it made sense too.
Still, to Haruko who seemed unconvinced, Kirigakure-sensei said—
[—Leave the rest to adults]. That’s what she apparently said.
So I decided to try believing too.
In those words.
“Then I’ll go to the teacher.”
The reception room is a place I don’t usually go, so I’m a little nervous.
Also, talking alone with Kirigakure-sensei is something that doesn’t happen much, which is another factor.
“Then I’ll wait at the school gate for you, Mizuri.”
“…Eh, no, that’s too much trouble. I don’t know what time it’ll be.”
I decline, but Haruko stubbornly won’t accept it.
“It’s fine, it’s fine! I want to go home together for the last time! I want to end as best friends!”
“E-eh, but…”
“We’ll go different ways and each proceed on our own paths, but I want to make that departure together!”
Haruko flashes a cheerful smile.
She’s saying cheesy lines.
“Aren’t you trying to look cool?”
Haruko had this side to her.
A habit of saying manga-like lines.
I surprisingly didn’t dislike it.
“I’m being serious here… oh well, so anyway, go on. Explain your situation to the teacher casually and talk about how you want things to be. The adults will handle the rest skillfully.”
“Y-yeah.”
“Well then, off you go!”
Thanks to Haruko, my nervousness eased a little.
The reception room is in front of the second floor faculty room. Set in a secluded place.
The usually noisy school interior becomes quiet after school when it’s empty.
It’s like a different place from lunch.
The after-school dimness and quietness create an uncomfortable feeling of unease.
“Let me quickly consult and go home.”
The faculty room apparently still had some people remaining, as lights were on.
The room in front of that was the reception room, and when I knocked, I got an immediate response.
“Tachibana-san, right? Yes, please come in.”
Kirigakure-sensei’s warm voice.
“E-excuse me.”
When I slid the room door open, Kirigakure-sensei was sitting waiting for me.
In the reception room, there was a table with two sofas arranged across from each other, and behind was a door leading somewhere.
So this is what reception rooms look like.
“Don’t stand there, sit down, sit down.”
The teacher showed a reassuring smile and guided me to the seat opposite her.
“E-excuse me.”
Sitting down, I realized that Kirigakure-sensei looked prettier than usual somehow.
