- Chapter 02: A New Guild Established
Sigh—. I guess I really won’t be able to get my hands on a quest if I’m not with a big guild.
Laurent trudged down the corridor of the Quest Reception building while sighing. As he did so, a tall mage called out to him. “Ara? Laurent-san? Aren’t you Laurent-san?”
“Oh, Lilianne-san.”
“It’s been a while, Laurent-san.” The woman held her skirt lightly between her fingers and gave a polite bow.
Lilianne was a high-ranking member of the guild, Guardians of the Magical Tree.
Guardians of the Magical Tree was the second-largest guild after Golden Hawk.
“I was in your care the other day. It was thanks to you that I was promoted to A-rank adventurer last month. It was all because you brought out my unique skill, [Float]. Thank you.” Lilianne bowed gratefully.
She believed that it was thanks to Laurent that she had become successful.
She and Laurent had gotten to know each other during a joint quest between Golden Eagle and Guardians of the Magical Tree.
Even back then, the power and range of her magic had been exceptional. However, her accuracy had been notably low, and so she had to act as a rear guard instead.
The one who’d discovered her skill, [Float], had been Laurent.
For some reason, when Lilianne cast her magic in a downward direction, her hit rate increased dramatically.
With her enormous firepower and her newly learned [Float] skill, she became even more formidable. And in a blink of an eye, she had obtained the position of A-rank adventurer.
“Of course not. It wasn’t all that impressive. You became an A-rank adventurer with your own strength, Lilianne-san.”
Lilianne’s attitude relieved Laurent.
She was truly someone who did not discriminate, always treating everyone, no matter their social status, with courtesy.
“Incidentally, why are you here at the Quest Reception building? Of all people, for one of Golden Hawk’s executives to come here to take a quest—alone, at that.”
Lilianne was mistakenly under the impression that Laurent was an executive member of Golden Hawk.
In reality, he hadn’t even been able to become more than a normal member, but no matter how many times he explained to her, she didn’t believe him.
“No, I’m actually not part of Golden Hawk anymore.”
“Ara, are you striking out on your own? With your skills, being independent would certainly give you greater benefits and profits.”
“No, actually… they expelled me from the guild.”
“Expelled? Someone like you?” Lilianne looked astonished. “That’s… I don’t know what to say.”
For a moment, she seemed dumbfounded. But she shook her head and gathered herself, and abruptly, a warm smile lit up her face.
“It’s just time for lunch. If it’s alright with you, how about we take some time to talk in a quiet place?”
So, they left the building and entered a place for lunch.
——
“I have always wanted to give you my thanks. However, I’ve been busier than expected, and couldn’t contact you. I’m very sorry.”
“No, of course. There’s no helping it if you were busy.”
“This is a tiny token of my gratitude. Please allow me to pay the bill here.”
“No… It’s really fine.”
“But aren’t you unemployed at the moment?”
“Uh—that’s, well…”
“Can you find it in yourself to let me return the favor here?” Lilianne looked at him pleadingly.
Anything is fine, as long as I can do something for Laurent.
It felt like that was what she was thinking.
Laurent smiled wryly.
He couldn’t oppose this person.
“Do as you like, then.”
——
“Even so, why on earth would they do that to you? You were clearly the backbone of that guild. As long as you were with Golden Hawk, Guardians of the Magical Tree wouldn’t ever be able to compete with Golden Hawk. That’s always been my opinion. Even Jill-san, who has been very active recently; wasn’t your appraisal skill the reason for her success in the first place?”
“It’s not like that. And lately, all I do is just get in other people’s way…”
“That can’t be true. Was there something else going on?”
“Honestly, I haven’t been getting along with the guild leader, Lucius. I guess it was to be expected; there’s a glass ceiling for adventurers who only have appraisal skills.”
“But aren’t your appraisal skills the original force behind the guild’s progress? And no matter how low your aptitude as an adventurer is, isn’t it too much to expel you like this?”
“True. I thought that Lucius appreciated my value, too, and I put him and the guild’s circumstances above myself. Because I thought of him as a close friend. But to Lucius, I was nothing more than one of his many subordinates,” Laurent said gloomily, looking down at the teacup on the table.
Lilianne looked at Laurent in pity. Then, gathering herself, she clapped her hands together loudly.
Laurent stared dazedly.
In contrast, Lilianne smiled sweetly. “Don’t be so down. If you’re not suited to be an adventurer, there are other professions out there, right?”
“Other professions…” he sighed.
“Indeed. For example, a production-type job where you don’t have to go out adventuring. That’s right, how about starting an alchemist guild, if possible?”
“An alchemist guild?”
“Yes, my guild happens to be looking for an alchemist guild that can take on a large order of Earth Stones*.”
(T/N: The original translation is Earth Craft, but that sounds… weird.)
Laurent sighed. Is this why she was at the Quest Reception building? To put out a quest for alchemists?
“Laurent-san. If it is alright, could you please accept my request? Guardians of the Magical Tree hopes to surpass Golden Hawk’s production skills. But you know, no matter what we do, the existing alchemist guilds will prioritize the larger guild’s orders. We would also like to have a way to fight back, to get ahead of Golden Hawk somehow.”
“I would love to take your quest, but I don’t have any alchemical skills.”
“That’s alright. If you do not have the skills yourself, hire someone with those skills. You have [Appraisal] skill, don’t you? And when you discover a talent with alchemical skills, you could take them in as a guild member.”
“I see. But I don’t know if I can do it. Being a leader.”
“It’s fine. If it’s you, you can surely do it. Believe me.” Lilianne clasped Laurent’s hands, giving him a confident look.
It’s strange. When she says it, I feel as though I can really do it.
“I understand, Lilianne-san. Let’s give it a shot.”
“You’ll do this for me?”
“Yes. I was just thinking that I should not be satisfied with things coming to an end here. Let’s get back at that bastard Lucius together.”
“Yes, yes. Absolutely, let’s do it.”
They shook each other’s hands firmly, pledging themselves to a common cause.
——
The next day, Laurent applied with the local office for the creation of a new alchemist guild and began recruiting members.
The guild’s name was Arsenal of the Spirits.
Because it had received the stamp of approval by the big guild, Guardians of the Magical Tree, applicants were rushing in the day after that.
