Natsume Shina and Precious Mother-Daughter Time.
Natsume Shina’s POV.
“Ahhh~! I’m so full! Mama, it was delicious!”
“Fufu, I’m glad you liked it. You should go again with Tennouji-kun sometime.”
“Yep! Next time I’m getting the hamburger steak!”
I rubbed my stuffed belly and left the restaurant with Mama. The place she’d recommended felt like a hidden gem, but the omelette rice was insanely good! Dai-chan would love it too, so I’ve gotta tell him about it!
“Mama~!”
“Yes, yes? You’re such a spoiled little girl today, wanting to hold hands.”
“Ehehe ♪”
“Walking hand-in-hand like this… the last time was probably when you were in early elementary school, wasn’t it…?”
“Yeah… it was.”
Mama didn’t try to shake me off; she squeezed my hand properly. It had really been years. Second grade, maybe? After that, Mama got super busy with work and hardly ever came home. I cried every single day because I couldn’t eat Mama’s cooking anymore.
“Shina, when we get home let’s talk a lot, okay? It’s far too late to make up for everything, but…”
“Yep! Oh! Mama, let’s take a bath together!”
“Eh—? W-Well… sure, why not.”
“Yay~! I’ll wash your back for you! Dai-chan loves it when I do that!”
“Ehh!? Shina, you and Tennouji-kun are already… that far!?”
“Ah… u-um… n-no, that’s not—”
“You’re whistling terribly, you know. W-Well… if you’re a couple and you both consent, that’s one thing… but Shina, you’re still in high school. You have to show some restraint. Protection—are you doing it properly?”
“Y-Yes! We always use it!”
“…I’m not sure if that’s ‘good’ or not, but… if something were to happen, it wouldn’t just make the two of you unhappy. The child would be unhappy too, remember?”
“Yes…”
“I believe Tennouji-kun wouldn’t be so heartless, but still—restraint, okay?”
“Oka~y.”
Shoot… I let it slip… But figuring that out just from the bath thing? Mama’s amazing.
“You know, when I was young I did things in the heat of the moment too. I was an idiot who only cared about work… got swept away by sweet words… and that’s how you were born, Shina. That man said he’d take responsibility,’ so we got married—that was my biggest mistake. I should’ve raised you alone…”
“E-Ehhh!?”
No way!? Mama had a shotgun wedding!? With Papa!? M-My mind is blown, my mouth won’t close…
We got home, took a bath together, then sat facing each other on the sofa while Mama told me about when she got married.
“He said ‘I’ll take responsibility!’ but the moment we were married and you cried, he’d yell that you were too loud… You were a baby; crying was literally your job. I realized he’d just been saying whatever to keep me tied to him. So I carried you on my back to work… I caused so much trouble for the previous company president…”
“That’s… incredible… You went that far for me…”
“The man who’s asking me to marry him now is that previous president’s son—the current president. I know I ended up cheating… and that caused trouble for you too, Shina. I’m sorry.”
“EHHHH!?”
Today is just one shock after another! I’m so happy to learn all this about Mama, though!!
“My biggest failure was working and working until I neglected you. I always planned to divorce that kind of man eventually. I wanted to repay the previous president—the one you were so attached to, the one who let me bring you to work just to keep me at the company. I tried to save every last yen for your future tuition and living expenses after the divorce… and because of that obsession, I crushed all the time I should’ve spent with you. Even though the president always looked after you and told me it was okay…”
“So… it wasn’t that you cared about the president more than me…”
“Even so, I went to the president’s house and… did adult things. I stayed over… leaving you all alone. I’m pathetic. I have no right to say anything about that man. I put lids on you, on him, on everything, just to chase my own pleasure and escape stress… If Tennouji-kun hadn’t shaken me awake, I’d never have realized what an idiot I was.”
Mama really had been working herself to the bone for my sake—for tuition, for our life after the divorce. I’d been lonely, but… if Mama hadn’t worked that hard…
“What about Papa? Doesn’t he pay for anything?”
“He talks big, but he hasn’t given a single yen. Mortgage, utilities, your tuition, daily expenses—Mama pays for everything.”
“Eh!?”
“This house is Mama’s. The family name ‘Natsume’ is Mama’s too. That man’s surname is the super common ‘Yamada.’”
“W-Wow…”
I had no idea… I thought everything belonged to Papa… So Mama’s basically a total career superwoman? That’s… amazing. She paid for everything…
“Hey Mama, even if you divorce, I’ll still be Natsume, right?”
“Of course—if you stay with Mama.”
“I wanna stay with Mama! Wait… so he was bringing his mistress into Mama’s house and bragging ‘This is my house, pretty cool huh’…?”
“What? He actually said that? Hold on—that’s unbelievable… Even the day Tennouji-kun came over he acted all innocent… So that’s what was going on… I lost my temper and got hysterical, but—AAAAAARGH! THAT BASTAAAARD!!”
Uh oh, Mama’s furious…
“Hey Mama, can’t we do something so that old hag never comes again? Her makeup and perfume stink, she’s gross, and she called me a rude little brat!”
She says stuff like that every single time—things like “You should kick that kid out too” or “We don’t need her around.” I told Mama everything. Uh-oh… maybe I shouldn’t have… Mama’s face is turning demonic…
“How about we just change the locks?”
The way she switched from angry to smiling gave me chills. Mama is absolutely livid.
“Shina, I won’t let you suffer anymore hardship. I won’t let you go through anything pitiful. You can stay in the same school. So let’s just get divorced.”
“U-Um…”
“I’ll contact a lawyer. I can’t take it anymore. I can’t stand that he brings a woman who says those things to you into our—into my and your—house and calls it his own. I know where his mistress lives, so we’ll ship every last one of his things there. Along with the divorce papers. Then he won’t be able to come home. The car’s in my name too, so that’s confiscated—obviously. And… he’ll lose his job.”
“Even Papa’s job!? Why!?”
“He’s a hopeless man who never gets promoted. He was about to be fired, you see. But since he was going to be your father and said he’d take responsibility, the president at the time—back then he was still new, but his dad was president—put in a word for him. They couldn’t get him into the main company, so they placed him in a subsidiary. Apparently now the whole subsidiary hates him and he can’t do any work, so the subsidiary president came crying to our president begging for help… I was already wondering what to do about it.”
Mama rattled everything off in one breath and my head spun. But one thing’s clear—Mama is terrifyingly strong. And scary. If Dai-chan ever seriously makes her angry…
“Shina, if Tennouji-kun ever does anything irresponsible, don’t hesitate to tell Mama, okay? I’ll… give him a nice long lecture.”
“Y-Yes… But Dai-chan’s fine! I trust Dai-chan! He’d never ever do anything like Papa! Speaking of—Papa’s gross!!!”
“Right? Totally gross. I should be able to move by spring… so first things first, just the divorce. Then a useless homeless jobless man gets released into the wild, fufufu…”
“Mama, you’re scary… like, seriously…”
I swore then and there to never, ever make Mama angry. And when I told Dai-chan about all this later…
‘R-Right now, should I go dogeza!? I-I said some insane stuff back then…’
“I-It’s okay…! Mama said she really likes you, Dai-chan!”
‘I-I’ll go to Osaka, buy those famous Roku-roku cheese tarts and dogeza!!’
“Wah! Dai-chan! It’s fine, really, it’s fine!”
His voice was shaking the whole time… but now I understand just how amazing Mama is, and how much she treasures me, and I love her even more! Papa can disappear for all I care. As long as I have Mama, Dai-chan, Mio-chan, and Rin-chan, I’m happy! And I get to keep being a Natsume—that makes me happiest of all!
