Chapter 13: S-Class Beauty and Shoujo Manga
After approximately five minutes, the initial awkwardness between Haruya and Yuna began to fade. They exchanged the “shoujo manga” with each other, and Yuna ended up deciding to purchase it.
(…I didn’t really want to give it up, but I guess I had no choice this time.)
As they passed the manga back and forth, Haruya could tell from Yuna’s expression and behavior that she was just as passionate about shoujo manga as he was. Despite feeling a little regretful, Haruya eventually made the decision to give her the manga.
“Are you sure it’s okay? For me to buy it.”
“It’s totally fine. Besides, they’ll most likely restock it by tomorrow.”
“Well, I guess so, but…”
Yuna’s voice sounded monotone, and she twirled her black tendrils around her fingers, appearing restless and uneasy. Haruya noticed her lack of composure and sensed her caution.
(Is she nervous? No, it feels more like she’s being cautious…)
Haruya had no intention of taking advantage of the situation to get closer to Yuna or show any special favors. However, he was aware that there were some guys who might think that way, especially considering Yuna looked like a “S-class beauty”. It wouldn’t be surprising if Yuna had experienced such behavior before.
“Well then, I’ll be going now…” Haruya said, taking Yuna’s wariness into consideration. He tried to leave her side, as he had no plans of getting further involved with her, and he thought it would be reassuring for her if he left immediately.
That was his intention behind his words and actions…
“Hmm?”
Yuna looked at Haruya with wide blue eyes, seemingly puzzled upon hearing his words.
She was probably confused by Haruya’s lack of trying to take advantage of the situation.
“Well, I didn’t really think of using this opportunity as a chance to do something. It may sound rude, but… did you really think so?” Haruya chuckled awkwardly, acknowledging Yuna who averted her eyes and stiffened.
“Trying to get closer by repaying a favor. It’s a cunning tactic, but it could actually happen.” Haruya felt relieved when his speculation proved to be correct.
“Well… that’s why I’m about to…” Haruya tried to leave the bookstore, not wanting to make Yuna be more wary with his words. But…
“… wait a minute.”
Yuna’s blue eyes looked towards Haruya as she played with her black hair, and she continued.
“Even if it’s just a little… let me express my gratitude.”
“No, no, it’s not that big of a deal…”
Haruya tried to downplay it. After all, he had only given her a shoujo manga, it wasn’t something worth being thanked for. Even so, Yuna showed no signs of backing down. Fidgeting with her body, she blurted out these words.
“I’m the type who can’t leave a debt unpaid. As you said, there have been plenty of guys who tried to take advantage of me by making me be indebted to them. So I can’t be satisfied unless I repay the favor quickly.”
Haruya solemnly nodded as he listened to her story. After hearing her words, he couldn’t simply refuse her kindness.
Considering how many times Yuna must have been approached by men, it makes sense that she would try not to ingratiate herself with them after the fact.
“Well, to put it simply, it’s troubling,” Yuna said with a bitter smile, looking apologetically at Haruya.
“At least let me treat you to a drink, or just juice. Please.”
“Well then, I’ll take you up on your offer.”
“Thank you. In that case, let’s go to the vending machine.”
“Ah… it’s fine to buy it from the supermarket on the first floor.”
Haruya proposed, knowing that it would be cheaper than buying from the vending machine. Yuna nodded in agreement and went to the cashier with the shoujo manga in her hand.
(…I’ve been meeting a lot of pretty girls lately.)
With a wry smile in his heart, Haruya recalled his encounter with Sara and the bond he formed with Yuna today.
Life sure has its mysteries, he thought, as he watched Yuna’s figure from behind.
♦︎♢♦︎
As Yuna paid for her shoujo manga, her mind was filled with thoughts of a certain man.
(…Even a guy like him, who looks like that, reads shoujo manga. I wonder what other works he likes. Does he have a favorite character or ship…?)
Yuna had never revealed her love for shoujo manga to anyone before. It was something she kept to herself. But seeing Haruya, a boy who shared the same interest, had piqued her curiosity.
(…I kind of want to talk to him about shoujo the manga.)
