Magic Power Measurement
The next day, a test will be held to determine should I be expelled or not.
To put it simply, if I had magic power, I will stay with the Estark family and continue to support them. If I don’t have magic power, I should pay the price of getting expelled.
I heard that this is a tradition of the Estark family that has been done for generations.
It is said that the prestigious Estark family, rarely had children who were not good enough in magic, and every time they did, they would hold such an event to decide whether or not to expel them.
I heard that five people had been expelled because of this test in the past, but I wondered if I would be the sixth. I headed for the barracks in the Estark Castle with these thoughts in my mind.
There was a group of familiar faces gathered there.
Frodo, my eldest brother. He still had the same cold eyes. His eyes looked as if they were made of ice.
Marks, my second brother, looks as stupid as ever. He was sitting in the dignitary’s seat with a sense of privilege.
Minerva, my stepmother, was still looking at me as if she were looking at a rat. For some reason, my father was not there. He had been summoned by the king and was staying in the royal capital.
Above, there was the Reishi’s family, there were also relatives and retainers of the Estark family as well. I guess they were obligated to attend because it was a traditional event, and they were also curious about the bastard.
they were curious to see how the incompetent Licht would be banished.
It’s annoying that I have to meet their expectations, but since “banishment” is what I want, I’ll make it quick.
I headed to the center of the barracks and asked the mage who was there what I should do.
He pointed to a target in the center of the barracks and told me to fire a fireball spell at it.
“Fireball…”
It’s a really basic spell, even kids of the Estark family can use this spell.
But I’m the incompetent Licht, I can’t shoot fireballs. When I explained this to the mage, he approached me and said, “Ignition” would be fine.
Ignition is a simple magic, a magic that releases a small spark of fire. It is a basic spell that even an ordinary farmer can learn. It is useful for making fires.
I got as close as I could to the target and fired my “ignite” spell there.
The flimsy fire managed to make it to the target.
Of course, this level of firepower did not ignite the target, but it still was enough for it to measure my magic power.
The target, which was connected to an artifact of an ancient magical civilization, was going to score my magic value.
“Licht Estark, magic value 11.”
As soon as the number was announced, the audience’s laughs started to pour. 11 is such a low number that some even said, “The late son of my stablemate is better.”
Well, I didn’t have a choice.
I tried to give up and turn around, but there’s something stopping me.
“Hey, wait, you’re just going to run off without saying a word? What’s that? An attitude of a bastard? Come on, the crowd is expecting you.”
The sarcastic voice sounded familiar. It was my second brother, Marks.
“… Brother Marks, it’s been a long time.”
“I don’t remember being your brother.”
“…Mr. Marks, can I help you?”
“No, I just thought I’d let you know that you’ve come up with a ridiculous number of 11, and you seem to have no shame in it.”
“Could it go any lower?”
“It’s too weak. It’s a disgrace to Estark.”
“I’m sorry about that.”
Maybe it was because I didn’t sound very apologetic, Marks seemed annoyed.
“I’ll show you how it’s done!” said Marks as he stood beside me and began to chant a spell.
“Flame that burns red-hot! Twist the laws of nature!”
As a large fireball appeared from the tip of Marks’ right hand, it headed straight for the target.
The target burns up.
Then, the counter on the measuring devices moved around at a ridiculous speed, tapping out the numbers.
Marks’s magic value is,
“332”
That number had the crowd in an uproar.
“Oh! Amazing! That’s House Estark for you.”
He was really excited.
Yes, 332 is an impressive number.
My goal is to be expelled as quickly as possible, not to beg my second brother for mercy. That could be said for the rest of the family as well. I just wanted to leave peacefully.
I ignored Marks, who thinks that way and brags about it in a disgusting way. He must had found that my lack of response is boring. So he let me go.
“Hmm, boring one. Do whatever you want, go where you want, you bastard.”
He said.
I would do what he said, but as I turned my back and started walking, someone stopped me.
“Please wait!”
Her voice was both elegant and beautiful. Her courageous voice echoed through the barracks.
My sister’s voice is remarkable. It seems to resonate well on the battlefield. It’s a shame she was born as a woman. I looked at my sister Ellen, she was holding an old book.
She spoke as she opened it.
” Everyone, please wait for the banishment of my brother Licht.”
“What, Ellen, are you going to stand beside this worthless bastard again?”
Said Marks in disgust.
“Brother Marks, it’s true that Brother Licht’s magic value is very low, but in return, Brother Licht is the greatest swordsman of all time. It would be unfair if we don’t take into consideration his skill as a swordsman.”
“What? This guy is the greatest swordsman of all time?”
He looks at me with a face if disbelief.
“Yes, Brother Marks. Brother Licht’s swordsmanship is truly divine. You don’t need to use any magic to be a great swordsman of the Estark family. –your sword skills is nothing compared to Brother licht’s.”
She calculated that saying it would make the arrogant Marks furious. Sure enough, his face turned red.
“Ellen! You dare to mess with me!”
“I’m not messing with you. I’m just telling you the truth.”
“You still dare to say that? You little slut! I’ll tell your father when he comes home.”
‘Well, that’s frightening. But when Father returns, what will he think when he finds out that Brother Licht was banished without a formal test?”
“You think this is a formal test?”
It’s on! With that thought in mind, Ellen opened the old book she was carrying.
“Estark Book of Household Rules, Article XXII, Amendment III, written in the year 681. The banishment trial of House Estark shall be conducted by the measurement of magic, but if the banished wishes, he may choose to fight a duel. In that case, the observer has the right to select the opponent.”
Marks took the book from Ellen, “Damn,” he mutters, and threw the book on the ground. Minerva asked, “Is it true, Marks?” Marks replied, “It’s true, Mother.” Minerva frowned, she wasn’t happy about this, but Marks said this to reassure his mother.
“We are nobles of a kingdom that values tradition. We follow the teachings of our ancestors. if we defeat this little cocky bastard in a duel, our banishment will be justified, right?”
Marks glared at me.
I was about to argue that I’d rather be banished than fight a duel, but Ellen stopped me. When I was going to argue about it Ellen stopped me.
“What the hell are you doing?!”
My second brother Marks, who has zero tolerance for aggression was furious.
I tried to complain to Ellen, but she had a sad expression on her face.
“…I’ll die of loneliness if I’m separated from you, Brother Licht.”
If she said something like that with that kind of expression on her face, her brother can’t argue with her. Besides, aside from her, the barracks was filled with the atmosphere of a battle. There was no way it could be settled without a duel.
“… it can’t be helped.”
When I reluctantly challenged him to a duel, Marks accepted with anger.
Thus, the duel between me and my second brother Marks was set.
It was to be held here in the afternoon after lunch.
