- Chapter 10 - The Maid and the Girl in the Hood
The Maid and the Girl in the Hood
After walking a few kilometers to the north, we came to our destination, an inn town.
Since it is an inn town located at the foot of the mountain, the town seems to serve as an entrance to the mountain trail.
It is said that the bridge to cross the river at the end of this inn town had fallen down and is not accessible…
When I asked people on the street about it, I got confirmation that it was true.
This inn town was very crowded, probably due to the fact that the bridge had fallen down.
Apparently, there is a route to the northern city that detours around the trail, and it is overflowing with travellers and merchants who want to go through it.
“Can we get there on foot?”
I asked a nearby person about my question, and he said,
“It’s a very steep road. There are forest fairies around the area that will confuse you. If you had seven lives, you might try it once.”
Unfortunately, I only have one life, so I decided to be an adult and use the carriage.
When we went to the boarding station in the center of town, there was a long line of people waiting to get in.
Everyone seems to think the same way…
I had no choice but to wait in line quietly, but there was no sign of any progress.
I looked at the end of the line and saw that there was some kind of commotion.
Apparently, there’s trouble.
I’m bored anyway, so I’ll take a look.
“There’s an undesirable thief in this stable! Shopkeeper, please investigate.”
It was a woman in a maid’s uniform who approached the owner in a firm tone. She had her hair cut off at the neck, giving her a doll-like appearance. It was unusual to see a maid in such a mountainous inn town. Usually, maids are found in larger towns. I wondered if there was some kind of reason.
Then, as I focused on the maid, I realized that the person beside her was the Lord.
A small figure with a bright white hood over her head. Presumably a woman, she turned her face away and seemed to be hoping that the situation would be resolved.
I thought it was a strange combination of a woman who looked like a maid and a woman who was lurking in the background, but before I could think further, the owner opened his mouth.
“No, young lady, you’ll have to take care of your valuables yourself. This is not a social gathering place in King’s Landing.”
The people around her laughed and said, That’s true.
“I know that, but didn’t you tell me you wanted me to put my stuff there!”
The maid was still angry.
“I did say that, but I don’t think you would put your valuables in there. Your master seems to be quite well educated.”
“Shut up”
The maid bit her lower lip in frustration. The woman in the hood beside her pulled her sleeve lightly.
“…marie. He’s right, the owner is right. It’s our fault.”
“…miss.”
“Let’s consider this a good experience. Our goal is to get back to the capital. Once we reach the northern city, it won’t be long until we reach the capital.”
“…I see. I understand. Let’s give up here… You may have to put your master through a lot for a while…”
“I was just thinking about going on a diet.”
The girl smiles, probably to avoid bothering the maid named Marie.
This is the only way to know the personality of the mistress, but misfortune had befallen the girls…
More tragedy befalls Marie and her mistress, who have given up on the investigation.
“What? It was right there a moment ago! Miss, do you know where the ticket is?”
“I don’t know. I don’t have it.”
“That’s absurd. I put it right in front of you.”
“I don’t know, because you’ll be screaming for your wallet before I can check.”
Both the shopkeeper and Marie checked to see if any tickets had fallen to the floor, but there was only a scattering of dust on the floor and there wasn’t paper of any kind.
“No, that’s ridiculous. Are you saying that the ticket was stolen too…?”
She must have realized that anger is useless after the previous conversation with the shopkeeper. This time, she showed no anger and her expression sank into despair. The girl puts her hand lightly on the maid’s shoulder and comforts her.
The owner was merciless.
“If you don’t have a ticket, you’re not my guest. Don’t come back.”
He said.
Marie was frustrated, and the mistress looked disappointed as she tried to leave the stable.
The two of them walked past me.
At that moment, I caught a glimpse of the inside of the girl’s hood.
Her face was very calm, and her silver hair was very attractive. In short, she was very beautiful, but what bothered me more was that I had seen this girl somewhere before.
I’m confident in my memory, but I have a hard time remembering.
(…I’m good at memorizing magic books, but I’m not a good at remembering people’s faces.)
My sister told me once.
‘Brother Licht has no interest in other people. That’s why he can’t remember people’s faces.’
Then, I told my sister,
‘You yourself are so beautiful and clever that you can’t look at others who are less beautiful and clever than yourself.’
But that would be an overestimation.
The Estark family often held soirées, but it was rare for me to be approached by the ladies more than three times a night.
‘…it’s a mess.’
But now was not the time to be reminiscing about such things.
The question now is, who is that silver haired girl?
If I know her, then she must be one of the noble ladies who came to the Estark family’s soirées. If so, it makes sense that I can’t remember. I had danced with the noble ladies at every soiree, but I had never been interested in them.
They are dressed up like beautiful paradise birds, but they are only beautiful on the outside and empty on the inside. They are filled with nothing but vanity.
Their daily worries are only the type of sweets she eats for her afternoon snack, playing pseudo-romance with their piano and language teachers, and when they get tired of that, they go out to socialize and find men.
I had no interest in a woman with no real personality, just a gorgeous dress with arms and legs.
–But there was just something different about this woman.
She is definitely a noble person, but I feel that she has a nobility and intelligence that sets her apart from the daughters whose brains are made of sponge cake.
I can sense an atmosphere similar to my sister Ellen’s.
Curious, I followed the girls to the end as they left the stable. As they left, the girls apologized to the owner and the customers for the trouble they had caused. They bowed deeply to the people inside the stable.
When I saw that apology, something in me moved.
I guess I should say that I had developed a chivalrous spirit.
I felt like I was on a mission to save these unfortunate women.
I told the girls “It’s too early to give up”, and told them to stay here.
