Chapter 11: Jealousy
“—What do you think you’re doing? Karen—”
A voice cold enough to freeze.
The princess turned back and grabbed Karen’s arm with half her body twisted.
A silence so deep that the creak of her tight grip echoed.
But almost without pause.
“…Go on, continue. Against me—!”
The remaining two shadows who had come with us—they charged at the princess from both sides, just as we had planned beforehand.
While Karen and I drew attention, the two had blended into the crowd. Karen had unfortunately been stopped just now, but this time for sure.
Such expectations…
“—How annoying.”
She spat the words out coldly like ice.
Right after, silver light scattered from the princess’s body.
And then—Karen’s body flew through the air.
“Uwooh… Like a human hammer—”
The princess swung her entire body around with just one hand.
Karen said something that took the tension right out of the moment, but she was actually in serious danger. The princess planned to use the built-up momentum to hurl Karen at the two approaching shadows.
If I messed up, Karen could get seriously hurt—would I make it in time…!
“[Wind], Gust—”
“! …Oh, come on…”
It happened the instant I quickly tried to cast a spell to protect Karen and the others. The princess glanced at me and let out a sigh as if she had no choice.
Seeing a bit of strength leave her arm, I relaxed and dispersed the spell I had been preparing.
Right after that, the princess brushed aside all three shadows in the blink of an eye.
Karen and the others slammed into the ground together and let out groans of pain.
“Guh… Even after all that, it didn’t work. As expected of our master…”
Karen rolled on the ground and looked up at the princess with admiring words spilling out.
This wasn’t the time to admire her… but well, it was good. Though they got thoroughly beaten, the princess had eased up partway, so they didn’t seem to have major injuries.
That silver magic power of the princess just cloaking her gave her incredible strength. It seemed different from body reinforcement, but honestly I did not understand it well. Because of that, her inherent magic was like a wild horse she could not fully control…
Well. I’ll set that aside.
—The surprise attack failed. I had no choice but to stop the princess head-on now.
I had not planned for knocking her out right from the start, but from here I also had to deal with the interference around us. I had thought of countermeasures, though…
But that surprise attack still felt strange. I thought Karen and the others had done pretty well.
How did she notice? Did she use some magic or technique I did not know about?
As I tilted my head over that, the princess stared at me and muttered softly.
“—Your eyes, Albert.”
“…My eyes?”
What did that mean…
“…It’s not that I noticed the three targeting me. —I’ve only been looking at you the whole time, Albert.”
“At me? …Could it be, my eyes—”
“Yes. What I’ve been staring at the whole time—is your kind green eyes. But then you, even while talking to me… weren’t looking at me.”
And then, the princess looked at me with dark eyes and said.
“I noticed from your gaze.”
…Hmm. Who would have thought the reason the surprise attack failed was me. Certainly, my attention had been on Karen and the others the whole time, so I might have unconsciously looked their way.
But reading someone else’s movements from their gaze like some martial arts master… I thought that, but come to think of it, the princess was an all-around genius…
“Sorry, Karen, everyone. Seems my awareness was too lax.”
“Yes. Our movements were fine. Since it’s your problem, Mr. Albert, do the rest well.”
“Harsh.”
They had been rolling on the ground, but now the people around held them down.
They could still crack jokes in that situation… But naturally, we had planned for if the surprise attack did not settle things, so from here I just had to do my best as planned.
And so.
I carefully excited my magic power without letting it leak outside and slowly tried to approach the princess when it happened.
I directed my gaze at her and noticed.
The princess wore a dark aura like lingering resentment. She kept staring at me in that state. It felt different from anger, though…
And… the princess herself soon answered that question.
“—I’m right here. Yet in front of me, don’t take care of some other girl…”
…What?
Look at Karen’s eyes. Her face showed no expression, but… she glared at me like she wanted to erase me.
Plus, many people besides us filled the place now. Besides Karen and the others, there were shadows, and even a few from the knight order and court mages.
Naturally, surprised and suspicious looks turned our way from many directions. I did not care what people thought of me, but the princess had her position.
In that case, before the situation got any worse.
…The princess really left me no choice.
“—In that case, get ready. Don’t let your magic power drop. If you don’t want me looking at anyone but you that much—then how about we just dance alone together?”
I said that and smiled at her.
The princess’s cheeks flushed red, and she looked at me as if troubled.
However, in contrast to that cute appearance.
—From her entire body, a massive swirl of magic power rose up.
