ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
“Why are we going to Zwein?”
Inside the carriage, Anita asked Cain.
“Because Alicia is in Zwein.”
“Alicia… That was your girlfriend, right, Cain-san? So we’re going to Zwein to see your girlfriend…?”
“Is there a problem with that?”
“No—”
“The problem is that you killed the king.”
Ronnie said. He was clearly in a foul mood. He seemed intent on blaming Cain for killing the king. Even if they had been sentenced to death, committing the grave crime of regicide had been too much. They should’ve just escaped.
If they’d done only that, maybe—just maybe—they could’ve avoided being declared wanted criminals. But now that they had killed the king, there was no doubt they would become wanted criminals.
…Well, either way, they probably would’ve been wanted criminals, but the gravity of the crime was entirely different now. The soldiers would surely be combing the country with bloodshot eyes, hunting down the four of them to kill.
“Why did you do something so foolish?”
“Why? Because I was pissed off. So what? I was already sentenced to death. It’s all the same no matter how many more crimes I commit.”
Ronnie shut his eyes and let out a deep sigh.
“So what are we supposed to do now…? We can’t go back to the way things were. All that’s waiting for us is a life on the run until we die. Ahh, it’s over… Our lives are practically over…”
Ronnie muttered in despair, holding his head in his hands. He wasn’t alone. Anita and Daryl were also feeling down, though not quite to the same degree.
Thinking positively, they technically had avoided getting caught by that foolish king and executed by guillotine. At the very least, they were still alive. That was one way to look at it.
But just like Ronnie said, what awaited them now was a life of endless flight until death. And if Cain were a wanted man, he couldn’t exactly live a peaceful life with Alicia either.
…Wait a second.
It was only now that he finally realized.
(Would Alicia even agree to see me…?
He did plan to meet her—or rather, to show up uninvited. But what if she flat-out rejected him? He couldn’t allow himself to entertain some rosy delusion that Alicia would warmly welcome Cain, now that he had become a notorious criminal.
Ahh… What should I do? No, there’s nothing I can do…
While Cain was lost in thought, Ronnie—who had been muttering to himself the entire time—suddenly lifted his head. Then, as if shouting an epiphany, he declared.
“That’s it! We should just flee the country!”
“Good point. If we’re abroad, we won’t be on the wanted list.”
Daryl added.
“And the border’s not far from Zwein!”
Anita said. Fleeing the country. If the four of them wanted to survive—if they wanted to live normal lives—they had no choice but to escape abroad.
Zwein was located on the edge of the Holy Kingdom. First, they would go to Zwein to see Alicia. Then they would “persuade” her to “accompany” them in their escape.
Perfect!
Cain thought to himself.
That bastard Luke, who’s pretending to be Alicia’s boyfriend and also that suspicious woman who led Alicia astray… I will kill them both. They’re in my way. How infuriating.
“Alright. Let’s all flee the country together!”

Chapter 65
ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
Recently, I started living with Alicia. The house I had been living in until then had been arranged by Sharon, so strictly speaking, it wasn’t really mine. My own house had been taken by Cain and Sheryl, and Sheryl was dead.
So now, I was living in Alicia’s house. Since it was a place she had been living in alone, it wasn’t particularly large. Still, it wasn’t so small that two people couldn’t live there together.
Today again, Sharon and her subordinates, Elna and Elma, came to our house.
Do they seriously think Alicia’s place is a café or something?
“Man, something wild just happened.”
Elna said the moment she arrived.
“Something wild?”
“All four members of the Hero’s Party were just declared wanted for assassinating King Phillip of the Holy Kingdom.”
As she said that, Elna placed a wanted poster on the table.
Wanted… For murder… And not just any murder—killing the king…!?
Unable to hide my confusion, I stared at the poster and read every detail. The paper featured realistic drawings of the four and detailed descriptions. A reward would be granted to anyone who captured or killed them…
It also listed many other crimes they were accused of beyond regicide. Now, the four’s misdeeds were known throughout the entire Holy Kingdom.
“Man, maybe we should join the Hero’s Party hunt too. The bounty’s insane.”
Elna said with enthusiasm.
“Yeah.”
Elma seemed up for it as well.
“Cain, the Hero with the Holy Sword, is one thing, but the other three? We could totally take them on.”
“But Cain has the highest bounty, right?”
“Don’t get greedy. Even if he’s weakened, you’re not walking away unscathed if that Holy Sword hits you.”
“Truly terrifying.”
Alicia, who had been silently listening to the twins’ conversation, seemed to have something on her mind and spoke up.
“Why are you two so afraid of the Holy Sword?”
“Eh? Well, that’s because we’re demons and—oh.”
Elna slipped up.
“Demons…”
“Uh, no, I mean, um, it’s just a figure of speech, or maybe not, or… Hehehe…”
Elna tried to laugh it off awkwardly, clearly failing to cover it up. Elma and Sharon sighed, looking a bit exasperated.
“So, I was right after all.”
“…Right?”
Elna looked confused.
“I had a feeling you might be demons.”
“W-Why would you think that…?”
“Just a feeling… From the way you talked, and the overall atmosphere you all give off.”
Alicia said this. It seemed she hadn’t been certain, but it was true. There was something slightly off about the three of them. A kind of otherness that made them feel unlike people from the Holy Kingdom.
“So that would mean Sharon-san, who is your superior, Elna-san and Elma-san… She must be some important person in the Demon Kingdom—wait, don’t tell me, she’s the Demon King?”
Alicia probably meant it as a lighthearted joke. She said it with a playful smile. But Elna and Elma stiffened. Their expressions practically screamed “Correct.”
“Eh? Don’t tell me, I was actually right…?”
“Ah, yes. Indeed, I am the Demon King.”
Sharon gave in and confessed.
