I had been cuckolded by the Hero, and plunged into the depths of despair—that happened just yesterday. Now, I lay sprawled out on a bed at the inn, blankly staring up at the ceiling, thinking about what I should do next.
There was no way I could just brush it off with a “what’s done is done” and move on. Of course I felt hatred toward Sheryl, but an even stronger hatred welled up toward the Hero, Cain. If anything, I hated Cain more.
That worthless man being hailed as the savior of the kingdom—the Hero—was something I simply couldn’t forgive. Could someone like that really save the country, save the world?
“Ah, damn it…”
I slammed the bed and sat up. I couldn’t forgive him. I hated him. I hated him… Even after a whole day had passed, the flames of hatred weren’t dying down—in fact, they were growing stronger, fiercer.
I pulled out a folding knife from my rucksack. Even a small, pitiful thing like this could still kill someone.
The Hero was still just a man. If I gouged out his heart, he’d obviously die. I’d sneak up on him without being noticed and stab him with this knife—then make a quick escape. Simple, but not a bad plan.
However, for it to work in a single strike, I’d have to pierce a vital spot precisely. Whether I had the skill to do that was… I was honestly doubtful. I probably couldn’t pull it off.
“Hmm…”
Isn’t there some better item I can use…?
My eyes landed on something I’d used for a quest a while back: poison. It was a deadly toxin sealed in a small vial. It took a little time to kill, but its effectiveness was top-notch.
I unsealed the vial and applied a thin coat of poison to the blade of the knife. Then I put on a robe with a hood, pulling it up to conceal my face. I tucked the knife, its blade now glistening faintly, into my pocket.
“Alright!”
I left the inn.
I didn’t know where Hero Cain was, so for now, I headed to my house—or maybe I should say, what used to be my house. I leaned against the wall of a nearby vacant shack and watched for any movement.
After a while, Cain emerged from the house. There weren’t many people around. In a place this deserted, it was hard to approach him naturally. If I tried to get close, he’d probably notice. Even if I charged at him, he’d just counter with magic.
I kept my distance and began tailing Cain. He headed toward the main street—probably to do some shopping. Naturally, the street was crowded. Killing someone in a busy place was less than ideal.
…No.
Actually, in a crowded area, it would be easier to get close to him without drawing attention. I could stab him, then blend into the crowd and escape.
Perfect.
I took a deep breath and started slowly closing the distance between us.
Cain walked forward without turning around. He had no idea he was about to die. Just strolling along, completely carefree.
Almost there. Almost…
I pulled the knife from my pocket and carefully extended the blade. Swallowing hard, I gripped the knife tightly and aimed—ready to plunge it into Cain’s back—
—but then…
Cain abruptly stopped walking and turned to face me.
“Yo, Luke.”
He parried my attack easily.
