Chapter 26: The Morning Sun Rises in the Clear Moonlit Sky
“You did well to save Oboro. I am grateful.”
In the darkness, I heard Tsukuyomi-sama’s voice.
Unlike the first time we met, her tone was calm, and she praised me.
As I opened my eyes in an unknown space, I found myself in a place resembling the moon’s surface.
“Yomi, if you don’t mind, could you listen to my story?”
Sitting on a chair in that strange place, I nodded at her request and decided to listen.
“I have regretted many things. Binding Oboro as a god and imprisoning her on this land, being able to do nothing but watch her suffer—and accepting it as something inevitable.”
Tsukuyomi-sama continued with a sorrowful smile.
In this timeless space, as I listened to her regrets, I began to understand her true feelings.
“As a fraction of my true self, I had no power, and for these hundreds of years, I could only watch. I should have met her and apologized much sooner—but I was so afraid of facing Oboro. I hated showing her my weakening self day by day as a fraction of my true form. I wanted to remain strong in her eyes.”
“But I don’t think Oboro-sama cared about that.”
“You cannot understand Oboro’s true feelings. She might still resent me even now.”
“That’s not possible—it’s Oboro-sama we’re talking about.”
“Perhaps, but… I no longer have the time to find out. My role as a fraction was to save Oboro, and now that it is accomplished, I will gradually disappear.”
The regrets she had been holding onto for hundreds of years were beyond my understanding.
But not facing Oboro-sama was just an escape. I understand being scared and hating it, but that’s not the right way.
Even though I only knew Oboro-sama through memories, I felt I had to say this.
“Listen well, Tsukuyomi-sama. Oboro-sama is incredibly kind. She ate the impurities and fulfilled her role as a god, thinking of you more than anyone else. No matter how tainted she became, she kept living to protect the people. I’ve only seen those memories, but that much is clear.”
There’s no way someone like that could resent you. Her regret comes from believing she hurt the god in front of her. It’s not about who is at fault—it’s just a misunderstanding between two people who care deeply for each other.
“You both care deeply about each other, so why not have an honest conversation? You’ve got a lot to catch up on, right? You’re friends, so don’t run away just because time is short. It would make Oboro-sama sad.”
“But… I no longer have the strength for that.”
Ah, geez, this goddess is really indecisive.
Kagura will probably scold me later, but she’ll understand that I’m doing this for Tsukuyomi-sama. So I won’t regret my choice now.
“―Let me share my spiritual power with you. That way, we can talk again.”
“Hey, Yomi, what are you planning to do?”
“—I’m just going to help you with everything I’ve got. Take my hand, let’s go back together, Tsukuyomi-sama!”
With that, I used a forbidden technique to convert my life force into spiritual power.
Tsukuyomi-sama must have realized what I did, as she seemed hesitant to take my outstretched hand.
“Why are you going this far?”
“Because I want to help. I decided that I would absolutely save you.”
“You fool… Can I really meet Oboro again?”
“Of course, no one will blame you.”
“But I’m just a fragment—a shadow of the real Tsukuyomi.”
“So what? For hundreds of years, you’ve watched over Oboro-sama, right?”
“…Can I still be Oboro’s friend?”
“Ask Oboro-sama that yourself—so come on.”
I reached out my hand again.
When she took it, my spiritual power flowed into her, and Tsukuyomi-sama’s presence grew stronger. Before I knew it, we were back outside the mirror, in Oboro-sama’s shrine.
“Yomi!”
As soon as we were out of the mirror, someone embraced me.
The voice belonged to my beloved goddess, whom I hadn’t heard for days, and when I looked up, there she was—Kagura. Tears filled her eyes, and she looked a bit puffy from crying.
“Huh, Kagura!? Why are you here?”
“Because you were taking too long, Ryusui’s familiars brought me here. When I arrived, things were like this, and you didn’t come out for five days. I was really worried!”
“Has it been that long?”
“Yes, it’s been three days since Oboro returned to normal, and you still hadn’t come out. We were discussing who should go in to get you.”
Even though it felt like less than a day to me, so much time had passed.
Seeing the worried expressions of Makami and Oboro-sama made me feel a huge sense of guilt. Kagura looked visibly angry, and I had a lot to apologize for… but first, I needed to check on someone.
“Where is Tsukuyomi-sama!?”
“Oboro, let go! I’m sinking into your chest—I’ll suffocate if you don’t!”
“I knew you were planning to disappear, as you were inside me. This calls for a lecture.”
“Fine, I’ll take it, but let go already. I can’t breathe—!”
Looking towards the voices, I saw Tsukuyomi-sama nearly suffocating in Oboro-sama’s embrace.
“…She seems to be alright.”
“In what way does this look alright!?”
“But you’re talking…”
“Are you an idiot, Yomi? Oboro is really strong! My body has been screaming in pain—oh no.”
“Ah, Tsukuyomi-sama! Please don’t lose consciousness! Tsukuyomi-sama, Tsukuyomi-samaaa!?”
Watching this scene, I naturally smiled. I felt relieved.
Seeing everyone together like this made me happy, especially getting to see Kagura again.
Makami looked at Kagura, who was laughing at the two gods while I smiled, with a puzzled expression.
In that slightly chaotic space, I slowly collapsed to the ground, clenching my fist tightly. The shrine was filled with the morning sunlight, which made me inexplicably happy.
“Mission—accomplished.”
