“Do we have almost no luggage?”

“Just some fruit.”

We stood before the torii gate, carrying a furoshiki with our usual grapes and peaches wrapped inside. 

We traveled light, with only a single sword from the shrine’s innermost sanctum in addition to the fruits. 

Although it was clearly a sacred object, the shrine’s deity, Kagura, had given the permission, so I probably wouldn’t be punished. Besides, I had made a contract with the very god who could punish me.

“Are we ready to leave now, Kagura?”

“Yes, let’s go, Yomi.”

Passing through the torii gate, the shrine disappeared from view, just like when I first arrived. 

The eerie forest loomed ahead, and we began our walk through it together.

On this journey, just the two of us, we didn’t know where we’d end up. But first, we had to get through the forest. I had many thoughts about survival, but I had to work hard to travel with Kagura.
