Chapter 9: I Might Get Killed Someday…
“I’m glad you actually came.”
Mizushima approached with a happy smile, dressed in a boyish style with a hoodie, trench coat, and denim pants. But even if I wore the same outfit, I doubt I’d look as stylish.
She tried to stay inconspicuous with a newsboy cap, but it’s debatable how effective that was. It’s frustrating, but… she’s definitely high-spec in terms of looks.
“It was you who invited me. I could have just stood you up, you know.”
“But you didn’t. I really like that kind side of you, Souta.”
“…Don’t twist it. I just didn’t want you to think I was running away from you.”
Despite my retort, Mizushima’s smile didn’t falter. Seriously, her smug face is irritating.
“Shall we go then?”
“Yeah… But, are you sure? What about them?”
I glanced back at the girls lingering near the clock tower, seemingly reluctant to leave.
“Aren’t they your fans? Didn’t you want to talk to them more?”
“It’s fine. I appreciate their support, but today is my private time. Besides, it’s my first date with you, Souta. That’s my priority.”
I see. Well, it’s not really my place to comment as an outsider.
“Haah~ Sizu-san looked even cooler than in her photos.”
“Yeah, seriously. But who’s that plain guy next to her?”
“Maybe her manager? Nah, he doesn’t look like someone from the industry at all. Too plain.”
“Right? Probably just an office temp called to carry her stuff.”
“I wish he wouldn’t get too close to Sizu-san, even if that’s the case.”
As we started walking, I could hear fans whispering behind us. Their stares felt sharp. They really didn’t hold back… Well, I guess I am pretty plain and introverted.
“Hmm…”
Mizushima, walking beside me, suddenly stopped and glanced back at the girls by the clock tower. For a moment, it seemed like her eyes weren’t smiling.
“Mizushima? What’s wrong?”
When I asked, curious, she smiled again.
“Eii,” she said, and suddenly hugged my right arm.
“Wha!? Hey, what are you doing…!”
“Don’t move.”
She leaned closer to me and, for some reason, took a selfie with her free hand.
“What are you doing?”
“Just wait. And then, like this…”
“What the!?”
I peeked at the smartphone screen Mizushima was fiddling with and was taken aback.
“You didn’t just upload that photo to social media, did you!?”
“Yeah. I captioned it with ‘Out on my day off♪'”
“That’s not the point! Why would you do that without asking…”
“It’s fine. Only my face is visible.”
“No, my right arm is in it a bit!”
“I know. That was on purpose.”
Saying that, Mizushima looked proudly back at the fans by the clock tower. Some who had seen the post were already screaming, “What’s this!?” “What do you mean, Sizu-san…!?”
…This is bad.
“Ahahaha.”
“This is no time to laugh! Let’s get out of here now!”
Staying there any longer, who knows what those girls might do. Getting stabbed by a jealous fan is the last thing I want. Grabbing Mizushima’s hand, who was still laughing carelessly, we quickly left the plaza.

“Look, look, Souta.”
After moving away from the plaza, we arrived at a large shopping mall near the station. It was crowded with shoppers because of the weekend. Blending into the crowd, it was unlikely we’d be recognized.
“That photo from earlier is getting quite a bit of attention.”
She showed me her smartphone casually. The screen displayed her PhotoTele post and the comments it had received.
: Sizu-san’s photo update after so long, yay!
: Off-duty Sizu-san looks too cool!
: Isn’t that an arm around someone? Who is she with?
: Eh, who’s that next to her? Her manager?
: Got news from a friend. Seems like she was walking with a guy in front of Sakuragicho Station.
As expected, the comments seem more focused on the mystery of the arm that appears on the edge of the screen, which is mine, than on praising Mizushima.
“Ahaha, that’s hilarious.”
“It’s not funny! This is like, mini-viral or even sparking a mini-controversy!”
“Eh, really? Well, if it really looks bad, my manager will take care of it. No worries.”
Mizushima laughs it off as if it’s nothing. She’s so optimistic…
“I don’t get it though. Don’t you get in trouble with your agency for this? If it affects your modeling work, I can’t take responsibility, you know?”
“You’re overthinking it. Our agency isn’t that big, and to anyone other than the girls who read the magazines, I’m just a regular high school girl. I’m not some big celebrity, so it probably won’t turn into a big deal.”
Hmm, is that how it works?
Well, true, even as we walk through the crowd like this, it’s not like people are gathering around Mizushima like they did earlier.
There were a fair number of people turning to look at her, but that’s probably just because they thought, “Wow, that person is really good-looking.”
“Besides, I’ve decided to take a break from all my modeling jobs for this month.”
“Huh? Why?”
I couldn’t help but ask again, to which Mizushima replied as if it was the most natural thing in the world.
“Well, it’s because I’ve decided to spend as much time as possible with you, Souta, this month. I can’t be leisurely doing photo shoots now, can I?”
“You’ve got your priorities all wrong, seriously…”
Is she really that serious about ‘winning me over’? It seems a bit too elaborate for just a prank or a dare.
“Come on, don’t sweat the small stuff. Today’s our first date, after all.”
Taking my hand, Mizushima started walking briskly.
“Hey, don’t pull me. And where are we even going?”
When I asked, Mizushima smirked proudly and said,
“To a fashion show.”
