Chapter 2: Those Were the Good Days…
My school is a well-known private school in the city that goes all the way from middle to high school. It’s famous for its “free school spirit” and for “developing talents who can thrive globally.” So, a lot of our classes and school events encourage us to be independent and have an international feel.
As you’d expect from such a high-minded, famous private school, both the boys and girls here are of a high caliber. It seems like their good upbringing is reflected in their appearance, with a high percentage of good-looking students.
“Haaaah…”
But, of course, there are some exceptions. While many students are living their best, shiny school life, there are some who are having a more grey, dull time.
For example, right now, in the corner of this classroom 1-4, there’s a boy groaning like a zombie with dead-fish eyes. He’s a prime example.
…Well, that’s me.
“Good morning~… Whoa! What happened, Souta? You look like a dead person this morning.”
My classmate, Higuchi, who sits in front of me, is freaked out. By the way, I’m sitting at the very back by the window. For someone like me, who’s more on the quiet side, it’s the perfect spot to relax.
“Oooooh…”
“Hey, can you start speaking human again soon?”
Higuchi shrugs, looking annoyed.
“…I got dumped.”
“What?”
“I mean, my girlfriend broke up with me! Just yesterday!”
“Ah, I see. That’s, well… my condolences.”
Stop it. Don’t look at me with those pity-filled eyes and clasp your hands together. It just makes me feel more miserable.
“Souta’s girlfriend was Satomori from the advanced class, right? She seemed like a perfect, pure, and beautiful girl, too good for Souta, really.”
That’s right, just as Higuchi said, Ena-chan was too good for someone like me.
She was a top student in the special advanced class, only open to the top 40 students in our grade, and she was not only smart but also kind-hearted and super cute.
“Didn’t you two meet at the cultural festival in autumn of your third year in junior high and started dating after the winter break? So, it’s been only about three months, huh? Ahaha, that was a short spring.”
“…Three months, huh.”
Right. I met Ena-chan last November, when we were still in our third year of junior high.
Our school holds a cultural festival every year at the beginning of November.
Last year, my class decided to make a short film of about 15 minutes as our project. Because I was the only member of the cinema club in our class, I was more or less forced to take charge of the screenplay and everything else.
Moreover, the theme chosen by the class was a “youth romance,” something that seemed more suited to the outgoing and popular kids, not a gloomy guy like me.
Despite that, I studied youth romance movies as much as I could and managed to write the screenplay after much effort. Our movie became the most popular in our grade and was among the top in the entire junior high section.
Most of the praise for the film was because the girl who played the heroine was from the cheerleading team, which was very popular among the boys.
Indeed, most of the feedback from the screening was about how cute the heroine was, and there were hardly any comments about the story itself.
But then,
“Did you write the screenplay for this movie?”
Among them, there was one girl who sought me out to ask this. That was Ena-chan.
It turns out, like me, Ena-chan also enjoyed watching movies and would sometimes go to the cinema alone on holidays. Perhaps that’s why she noticed the effort I put into the story and structure of the movie and told me she found it interesting.
“You’re Sakuhara-kun from class 2, right? Do you like movies?”
“Y-yeah. Well, I’m in the cinema club…”
I had hardly ever had a proper conversation with a girl before, so I gave a nervous and somewhat dull response. Despite that, Ena-chan gave me a kind smile.
“What kind of movies do you like?”
“Well… I like a variety, but especially superhero movies, like ‘Spider-Man’ and ‘Iron Man’.”
“Oh, is that so? I haven’t seen many of those, but I guess boys would like them, huh?”
“What about you, Satomori-san? What kind of movies do you like?”
“I like animated movies, like Disney ones. …Ehehe, is that a bit childish?”
After the cultural festival, we started to chat about movies together from time to time. Eventually, we even began watching movies together on holidays.
“I like you, Sakuhara-kun.”
In January, after the winter break, Ena-chan confessed to me. For a geeky, introverted guy like me to be liked by such a neat and cute girl was like a “miracle” that probably wouldn’t happen even once in a lifetime.
“Will you… go out with me?”
Of course, I immediately said yes. And that’s how our relationship started.
Little did I know then that this peak of happiness in my life would come to an end just three months later.
