Chapter 48: Escaping Reality
“Glenn?”
“Big Brother?”
“Huh? Oh, sorry. I was just trying to sort out my thoughts. What were we talking about again?”
Glenn returned to reality and faced the two of them again, but he hadn’t been listening to their conversation.
“I was asking who the person next to you is.”
“I’d like to know what your relationship is too.”
Liz seemed normal, but Lucina’s eyes weren’t smiling.
The only thing I could say was that we were just friends and she was my sister. Nothing more, nothing less.
“Um, okay. Lucina, this is Liz, the friend I mentioned earlier.”
“Oh, I see.”
“And Liz, this is my sister, Lucina.”
“…I didn’t know you had a sister, Glenn.”
I introduced them to each other. Both of them had uncertain reactions, but it didn’t seem like anything bad would happen.
“Nice to meet you, Liz. Thank you for taking care of MY brother!”
Lucina greeted Liz, emphasizing her words. It felt unnecessary. After all, we’re siblings.
“I’m Glenn’s friend, Liz. Nice to meet you, Lucina.”
Well, I just hope they get along. It would be awkward if my sister and my friend didn’t.
“Alright, you two, get along, okay? And Lucina, you don’t need to emphasize that so much.”
“…yeah.”
Her response was weak. Oh well, what can I do?
“How about we go somewhere fun tomorrow after we finish the quest?”
“!! Yes! Let’s go!”
Lucina’s cheerful response came back quickly. She had been down just a moment ago but instantly bounced back. My sister is so simple.
“Alright, let’s go.”
“Okay!”
As Lucina and I were about to leave, Liz called out to us.
“Wait.”
I turned around to see Liz looking like she wanted to say something.
“Huh? What’s up?”
“Can I come along too?”
“What?”
Lucina was surprised by Liz’s words, and so was I. I didn’t expect her to want to come along.
“Huh? You want to come with us?”
“Yeah. Is that okay?”
“Well, I don’t mind.”
I glanced at Lucina, who seemed shocked and frozen. It must have been quite a surprise for her.
“Is it okay with you, Lucina?”
“Hey, Lucina?”
Lucina didn’t respond, so I waved my hand in front of her face.
“Huh? What is it, Big Brother?”
“Liz wants to come with us. Is that alright?”
“…”
Lucina was still frozen. What was she thinking about so deeply? I guess everyone has people they find difficult to deal with.
“Why don’t we use today’s quest to get to know each other better? You might find you get along well.”
I suggested this, hoping they might become friends by talking more.
“Yeah, you’re right. Alright, let’s get along, Liz.”
“Sure, let’s.”
And so, the three of us—Lucina, Liz, and I—headed out for the quest together.
“Hey, Liz, didn’t you have any plans today?”
“…Not really.”
“What about the others? They weren’t with you.”
“Alice and Carla are on a research quest. Stella is… probably sleeping somewhere.”
“That’s quite a relaxed schedule. I thought you all would be taking on high-level quests constantly.”
I agreed with Lucina. The high-rank parties I knew were always busy.
“Are you jealous?”
Liz gave me a smug look. Was she trying to show off to a mid-level adventurer?
“Well, I guess I am.”
“…”
Liz fell silent at my response.
“Um? Is something wrong?”
When I looked at Liz, she seemed to be deep in thought. After a moment, she turned to me with a determined look.
“…Then, why don’t you join our party?”
“”…Huh?””
Lucina and I both let out surprised sounds. Anyone would react like this if suddenly asked to join a high-rank party.
“I’ll ask Alice about it later.”
“No, no, no! Wait! Why does it sound like it’s already decided?”
I raised my voice to stop the sudden turn of events.
“Huh? But you just said…”
Liz tilted her head, looking puzzled.
“No, I was just asking back! Why did it suddenly turn into that?”
“Well… because I want to be with you, Glenn.”
“Huh?”
I froze at Liz’s unexpected words. Could it be that Liz likes me…
“…Big Brother?”
“Ah!”
Lucina’s voice snapped me out of it. But for some reason, I couldn’t look at her. Something felt off.
“Liz? What did you mean by that?”
Lucina asked Liz with a smile, but her eyes weren’t smiling.
“Hmm, I just want to hang out more and have you cook for us again.”
“…”
I fell silent. Oh, I see. Yeah, no big deal. I didn’t think for a second that she might like me or anything. I knew Liz was like this.
“Oh, I get it! That’s what you meant!”
Lucina looked strangely happy.
Why was she so pleased?
Here I was feeling down.
“Alright, let’s finish this quest and go home.”
“Huh? Glenn, you seem down.”
“Why would that be?”
“??”
Liz tilted her head in confusion. It’s just her being her usual clueless self. It’s my fault for misunderstanding.
“We’re almost there. Are you both ready?”
“Yeah, I’m good.”
“I’m ready too.”
And so, we arrived at our destination.
