Chapter 23: A Quest A Bit Farther Away
“Yesterday was eventful, but I did manage to refresh.”
I say as I rise from the bed and open the window. It seems I’ve woken up earlier than usual today.
I realized this because I could see a shop that only opens in the morning was already open.
“Wide awake now, so it’s time for breakfast.”
“Whoa! Glenn! You’re up quite early today!”
As I go downstairs, Gordon seems really surprised. Well, I am human, so it’s normal for me to wake up early sometimes.
“The usual for you?”
“Yes, please.”
After having my usual breakfast, I headed to the guild earlier than usual.
“There doesn’t seem to be anyone I know today.”
With no familiar faces around, I quickly went to the notice board to check out the quests posted.
“Hmm, maybe I should take on a quest a bit farther away today.”
I pondered over which quest to choose.
“…Let’s go with this one.”
I picked a quest at Fuuro Coast. Apparently, monsters are disrupting the fishing there, and they need someone to handle it.
“Right, I might as well buy some seafood ingredients to bring back while I’m at it.”
I’m starting to look forward to it! With that decided, it’s time to head out.
“Oh, Glenn.”
“Hm? Hey, Liz, it’s been since yesterday.”
As I was about to leave the guild, I ran into Liz, who I had met the day before. Looking around, I noticed it wasn’t just Liz; the other members were there too.
“Hey, good morning.”
“Ah, yes, good morning.”
I greeted back as the leader, Alice, said hello, so I made sure to return the greeting.
“I was just looking for you. I didn’t know how much to pay for the lunch you gave me before.”
“…Huh!?”
I let out a weird noise.
She handed me a bag, and when I looked inside, there were about 60 gold coins. With this amount, I could live lavishly in the expensive capital for a year.
“I can’t accept so much.”
“It’s fine. We’ve been earning quite a bit, and more importantly, we did something rude to you before, so consider this an apology.”
“…Thank you.”
I definitely feel like it’s too much to accept. But if they’re giving it, I might as well gratefully take it.
Let’s let bygones be bygones with the rice ball issue. Yeah, because if you weigh the pros and cons, it’s definitely a plus.
…I’m not swayed by the money, really.
“By the way, where are you heading next?”
“Um, I’m thinking of going on a quest to the Fuuro Coast.”
I interact with Liz as usual, but I speak formally to the other members. If I mess up and offend them, it could be socially fatal.
“Then, can we join you?”
“Huh?”
Why would you want to do that? You high-rankers are busy, right? You shouldn’t have time for this.
“Uh, aren’t all of you high-ranked and busy?”
“Ah, about that, some big-shot from the government came by because of that incident, so we’re probably going to be free for about a week.”
“Alice handled all the inquiries yesterday.”
“…”
So, they’re free now. But why do they want to come with me? I’m not a mama duck to be followed… I closed my eyes.
“Hmm.”
What should I do? I could refuse here, but it’s hard to say no when everyone is paying attention.
What should I do?
“Glenn… do you remember what I said yesterday?”
“Yesterday? Oh…”
“I said if it works out, can I come along, right?”
“…You did say that.”
“And you promised it was okay if it worked out, right?”
“…I did.”
“So… I can come along then?”
“…”
Liz is really persistent. She keeps pushing, using yesterday’s conversation as leverage.
“It’s okay, right?”
“…Yes.”
So, this is how a high-ranking party ended up joining my long journey quest. This is definitely more help than needed.
“It’s settled then. We didn’t get to introduce ourselves properly last time. I’m Alice, nice to meet you.”
“I’m Stella, nice to meet you.”
“I’m Carla. Pleased to meet you.”
“Uh, I’m Glenn. Nice to meet you.”
We reintroduce ourselves and get on the carriage. I never expected things to turn out like this.
