Chapter 01: Peaceful Daily Life
Having reincarnated into this world 17 years ago, I look the same as before—black hair with a slight wave, dark eyes, and an average height of about 170 cm. Just a normal guy.
Two years ago, I left my village and now live in a town.
Currently, I’m working as a solo adventurer. I’m not weak, but I’m also not so strong that I draw attention. You could say I’m pretty average in rank.
While most adventurers form parties, there are quite a few who prefer to go solo.
Why do I work alone, you ask?
Well, being in a party can be a hassle. You have to follow the party’s decisions for missions, and I’ve heard that splitting the rewards often leads to disputes.
That’s why people who dislike such complications tend to work alone.
I’m one of those people.
=========
Today, as usual, I opened the window of the inn where I’m staying and watched the kids playing energetically outside.
“Today is as peaceful as always.”
I like this life where I can wake up whenever I want and do what I like without hassle.
Today, I’ll get ready and go down the stairs of the inn to take on some easy job.
By the way, the inn I’m staying at is ordinary in terms of rooms, but the food is delicious.
It wasn’t very popular before, but after I suggested a few changes to the menu, it became known for its tasty dishes.
As a reward, I now get to stay here with a 30% discount.
I wouldn’t mind a bigger discount, but I won’t complain about luxury.
“Ah! Big Brother!”
While I was lost in thought, Rena, the innkeeper’s daughter, ran over to me.
“Hey, Rena, helping your dad out?”
“Yes, I am!”
Rena is a friendly 15-year-old girl with red braided hair, just like my little sister back in the village. And she’s always full of energy.
“Hey! You up, Glenn?”
The one who just called my name was Gordon, the innkeeper.
He’s about 2 meters tall, bald, and looks quite intimidating—like the leader of some bandits.
I wonder how such a gentle-looking girl like Rena came from someone who seems like he could stare someone to death.
Maybe it’s a genetic fluke?
With these thoughts, I sit down at the table.
“Glenn, the usual for you?”
“Yeah, the usual, please.”
I always order the same thing and take a seat at a time when not many people are around.
It’s supposed to be morning, but it feels more like noon, so most people are probably out and about.
After a little while, Rena comes over as usual, sits next to me, and starts a conversation.
“Do you have someone you like, Big Brother?”
“No, I don’t?”
“Hehe ♪, really?”
“???”
I didn’t quite get what she meant by that question.
What was she trying to say?
And then there’s Gordon, cooking in the back, giving me a piercing look.
It’s the kind of look that says he’s definitely not someone to mess with.
==========
Gordon’s intense stare made today’s meal feel tasteless.
I felt like I barely survived.
With that, I left the inn and headed towards the adventurers’ guild.
