◇The Next Morning
Checking that I had everything I needed, I left the house a little later than usual and headed to the municipal office.
Taking a different bus than usual on a school day and heading to a different location made me feel like I was doing something wrong. Well, skipping school is skipping school, so it’s probably not a good thing.
Arriving at the municipal office, I pressed the button on the machine to issue a queue number and sat down, waiting. Then my phone vibrated.
“Big news! It seems Shiozaki-san got married to someone!” It was a message from Kiyohito.
“Who’s the lucky guy?” I replied, just as my queue number was called.
Sitting at the reception desk, the pretty receptionist asked, “What can I help you with today?”
“Um… I’d like to submit a change of residence notification…”
She seemed momentarily surprised.
Changing residence meant creating a new family register with the declarant as the head. In simpler terms, it’s a procedure for severing ties with your family or not relying on your parents.
Of course, even with that, it’s not like you can completely sever the concept of family.
In Japan, there’s no method to completely sever ties with family. It’s almost like a curse—no matter how toxic the parents may be.
But even if I were to live alone now, there’s no way for them to track where I am. Not that I think they would bother looking for me anyway.
“Excuse me?”
“Ah, s-sorry. Could you repeat that?”
“Family register copy and personal identification… Do you have the change of residence notification?”
“Yes,” I replied, handing over the prepared documents.
Well, even if I do this, I’ll still have to live with that family until I graduate.
As the receptionist received the documents, she began typing on the computer. After a few minutes, she furrowed her brow and went to consult with someone in the back.
I figured that the procedure for changing residence isn’t something they do very often, so they might be having trouble with it.
She returned to her seat and started making a call, looking flustered.
I began to worry if they couldn’t proceed with the procedure. Then, a supervisor-like figure joined her, and they whispered to each other while looking at the computer.
After another five minutes or so, the receptionist finally started speaking, her head slightly tilted.
“Um… to get straight to the point, this procedure is unnecessary,” she said.
Unnecessary? If they couldn’t do it, I’d understand, but what did she mean by unnecessary?
“…Huh? What do you mean?”
“The information on the family register copy you provided is from two weeks ago… Yesterday, a marriage registration was submitted, so a separate family register has already been created. Therefore, if you wanted to separate from this family register, this procedure is unnecessary.”
I was dumbfounded, feeling as if I were being falsely accused. A marriage registration? Whose? My parents’?
“…Huh? Marriage registration? What are you talking about?”
“…Huh? Wasn’t a marriage registration submitted yesterday?”
“No… I didn’t submit anything. Besides, I don’t even have a girlfriend… Who am I supposedly married to?”
“Um… it’s,” she said, handing me a new family register copy.
In the marriage section, there was the name of one girl written there.
【Marriage: Marin Shiozaki】
At that moment, everything connected.
The fact that she knew my birthday, that Shiozaki-san got married, the contents of yesterday’s birthday present, her comment about receiving it…
I was speechless.
In the end, unable to proceed with the change of residence procedure, I headed to school feeling dejected.
◇June 13, (Thursday) 10:56 AM
“Hey, who did you marry?! Wait, how long have you been dating? Someone from our school?! A hottie?! Any pictures?!” A crowd had gathered around her, more so than usual.
“I can’t say who it is since he wouldn’t like it if I did~” she said with a bit of a blush, fluttering her hands. On her left ring finger, a sparkling silver ring was adorned.
“Seriously, that angel getting married. Probably some insanely handsome rich guy,” someone speculated.
“If that’s the case, he’s definitely from another school.”
“Of course. There are no rich handsome guys at our school.”
“Lucky. That angel seems like she’d spoil you rotten,” the boys in class chatted as Aoi entered the room.
“Oh, Aoi~ You’re late. Who do you think our angel got married to?”
“…,” Aoi glanced at the angelic figure and seemed like she wanted to say something.
“…What’s wrong?”
“Oh… It’s nothing.”
“So? Did you finish the procedure?”
“…I couldn’t change the family register.”
“Seriously?! Why not!?”
“Well… it’s not that I couldn’t, it’s just that it wasn’t necessary…”
“Huh? What do you mean?”
“Sorry… I need to sort out a few things myself.”
“O-oh…,” He trailed off.
Then, the bell rang.
◇Same day at 4:30 PM
“Aoi~ Let’s go home?” Kiyohito called out.
“Sorry… I have something to do today,” Aoi replied.
“Oh, I see. Alright then. See you tomorrow,” Kiyohito said.
“…Yeah.”
I glanced at her, but as usual, she was surrounded by a crowd, and she left the classroom with a few other girls.
Since I didn’t know her contact information or where she lived, I reluctantly decided to follow her.
Marin Shiozaki returned home happily as usual.
Following classmates like this felt like I was doing something really wrong. But I needed to find out what was going on, so I kept tailing them.
One by one, the girls went their separate ways until only she was left.
As I approached her, she turned onto a residential street from the busy main road.
Following suit, just as I was about to catch up, she startled me with an innocent “Waah!”

Startled by my reaction, she giggled cutely.
But what should I say now that I’ve caught up? Should I ask why Shiozaki-san and I are supposedly married?
“Um…”
“Oh, you already figured it out! Well, that was quicker than I expected,” she said, flashing a mischievous smile.
Her words confirmed the truth once again.
“Um… What do you mean?” I asked.
“It’s not something we can discuss standing here. Let’s go!” she said.
“…Go where?”
“You know already~” she said teasingly, leaning in close and whispering, “To our love nest of course?”
Then she hurried back towards the main road, flagging down a taxi. She grabbed my hand, pulled me into the taxi and gave me the name of a luxury apartment building near the station.
It was the address listed as my new registered domicile.
“…Shiozaki-san… Do you live there?”
“Huh? Oh no, not really. That’s more like my dad’s hobby house. We have a different family home. He just said I could use it if I wanted to live alone.”
Using a luxury apartment as a hobby room… I was speechless at the difference in our worlds.
We arrived at the tower while she held my hand. Passing by the concierge with a nod, we took the elevator to the top floor.
“By the way, yesterday, Mizuki… Does that ring a bell?”
“…Yeah. Mizuguchi-san, right?”
“Exactly! Mizuki called me ‘Mom’ by mistake, haha.”
“Huh… Really?”
As Shiozaki-san continued the conversation as if nothing was out of the ordinary, I began to feel a growing sense of unease. We exited the elevator and entered apartment 3408.
She led me into the living room and gestured for me to take a seat on the sofa.
“Would you like something to drink?” she asked.
My throat was dry, so I nodded.
“I’ll have… some tea.”
“Sure thing!” she chirped, retrieving tea from the fridge with the same energy she had at school.
Taking another look around, I couldn’t help but be amazed by the house. The view from the window overlooking the station was breathtaking.
Then, my eyes landed on a particular room, and I was left speechless.
“Marin and Aoi’s Room ♥”
“Um…”
“Hm? What’s up?”
I was too slow to realize. This was clearly an abnormal situation. There was no way I could just hear the explanation and say, “Okay, done.”
“Hey, Aoi-kun. Would you like a boy or a girl?”
“What are you talking about?”
“It’s obvious! Our child ♥”
“…!”
“We’ll be together forever, you know?”
It was a love as twisted and dark as the hand-drawn heart.
