Chapter 01: The Inevitable Death End
You might find this hard to believe, but I was reincarnated as a mob character in a game.
This world is the setting of a gal game called Love or Dead (LoD). My new identity? Satoshi Iriya, an unremarkable side character.
At first, I didn’t realize I was in the world of LoD. Sure, I knew I’d been reincarnated the moment I was born, but this place didn’t seem any different from reality. There were no spells or supernatural phenomena—just entrance exams, elections, and everyday life.
So, I decided to lay low. With my past-life knowledge as an advantage, I quietly excelled in academics, sports, and even dabbled in stocks. It was a comfortable, unassuming life.
But that quiet life shattered when I entered high school. That’s when I realized the truth about this world.
It all clicked one day when I saw them—a group of people unmistakably familiar. Characters I remembered all too well from LoD.
“Yuto-kun, what exactly are we to you? Don’t you think it’s about time you made it clear?”
“W-Wait, calm down, Satsuki…”
It was a crisp winter day, the biting cold just beginning to ease. The bare branches of roadside trees still clung to their tight buds, but the quiet promise of spring lingered in the air.
In the middle of this serene moment, I spotted a high school boy surrounded by four girls. At first glance, it might seem like the start of a dreamlike harem scenario. But if you looked closer, you’d see that the atmosphere was anything but sweet.
The tension in the air was palpable. This wasn’t a scene of youthful romance—it was a battlefield.
The guy being cornered was Yuto Sano, the protagonist of Love or Dead (LoD). With average looks and an equally average personality, he was designed to be a relatable everyman. His one defining trait? Kindness. He was the type of guy who’d go out of his way to help anyone in trouble—or at least, that was how his character was supposed to be.
In theory, anyway.
The one interrogating him with a frightening expression was Satsuki Saionji. Her long, beautiful pink hair and radiant smile made her a standout figure, admired by everyone. As a gravure idol with a dazzling presence and a figure to match, she was the top pick for most guys at school—their dream girl. She also happened to be one of LoD’s heroines.
Normally, Satsuki was cheerful and approachable, a magnetic personality that drew people to her effortlessly. Unfortunately, her charm often led boys to misinterpret her kindness, resulting in a steady stream of love confessions. But right now, the same girl who was usually the picture of brightness and warmth was confronting Yuto with a terrifying glare.
Standing nearby, three other stunning girls watched in silence. They were also heroines of LoD, and their gazes carried the same weight of intensity as Satsuki’s.
“Yuto-kun, you promised, didn’t you? After the exams, you said you’d choose one of us to date.”
“W-Well, yeah, I did…”
“Graduation’s already over, you know? We’ve waited long enough.”
Satsuki’s brows drew together in frustration, her lips trembling faintly as she struggled to hold her emotions in check.
“I know.”
“Really…?”
“…Yeah. I’ve decided to stop running away. I’ll face this properly and make an honest decision.”
“…I see. In that case, will you tell us? Which one of us are you going to choose?”
As Yuto’s steady gaze pierced through the group, a collective sound of held breaths echoed around them. The girls’ anxious anticipation was palpable—some clutched their skirts tightly, while others shifted uneasily, unable to stand still.
Then, with a bright, beaming smile, Yuto spoke as though he’d just solved all their problems.
“━Let’s all become friends with benefits.”
A heavy silence followed.
“What are you even saying…?”
Satsuki’s voice trembled, her confusion clear as she struggled to process his words.
“What do you mean? I’m saying we should all have sex together.”
“Don’t be ridiculous! There’s no way we’d ever agree to something like that!”
Yuto let out an exasperated sigh, running a hand through his hair in frustration.
“Listen, Satsuki. The thing is, I don’t want to pick just one of you.”
“…What?”
He met her stunned gaze with utmost seriousness, then broke into a carefree smile.
“You all have something special about you. I tried—believe me, I really tried—to choose just one of you. But no matter how hard I thought about it, I couldn’t do it. You’re all too amazing. So I figured, why not start by getting to know each other… intimately? Once we’re all comfortable, we might realize it’s not so bad.”
The sheer audacity of his suggestion left the girls in stunned silence. Mouths hung open, and no one could utter a word.
Finally, Satsuki’s voice broke through the tension.
“Enough… I’ve heard enough, Yuto. I see now what I mean to you. I finally understand… This is goodbye.”
“W-Wait, Satsuki!? Everyone else too!?”
Satsuki lowered her head, her face hidden behind a curtain of pink hair, and hurriedly walked away. Her shoulders trembled faintly as if trying to suppress the emotions boiling within her. The other three girls followed silently, their heads bowed, shadows of heartbreak etched into their movements.
Ahead of them was a crosswalk. The signal was already blinking, signaling its imminent change. If they hurried, they might make it across, but the tear-filled haze clouding their eyes made it doubtful they could see clearly.
—This is my chance. If I act now, I might be able to save them.
“I’m sorry, but I can’t let you go any further.”
“Huh?”
Without waiting for a response, I darted forward, throwing myself into action. I shoved Satsuki—the one leading the group—with all the strength I could muster. The other heroines, trailing close behind her, were swept up in the sudden motion, stumbling back with startled gasps.
They looked up at me, their eyes wide with confusion, unable to process what was happening. Forcing the brightest smile I could manage, I spoke my final words to them.
“Goodbye. And live a long life, okay?”
The screeching sound of brakes tore through the air, sharp and jarring.
Before I could turn back, an impact struck me like a hammer. My body was flung into the air, weightless for a brief, surreal moment before slamming onto the cold asphalt.
Heat surged through my limbs, the fiery sting accompanied by a growing wetness seeping across my skin. It didn’t take long to realize—it was my own blood.
A thick fog began to cloud my mind, every sensation growing distant and muffled. My vision narrowed, dark spots creeping in from the edges. My consciousness was slipping, unraveling thread by thread. I knew it wouldn’t be long now.
“Are they… safe…?”
Ignoring the searing pain that threatened to drag me into unconsciousness, I forced my neck to move. My gaze swept across the scattered remnants of my belongings—crumpled notebooks and study materials, the ones I’d poured so much effort into for exams.
But none of that mattered anymore.
Beyond the chaos, I spotted Satsuki. She stood frozen, unharmed, her wide, tear-filled eyes locked onto mine. Relief surged through me, drowning out the pain for a fleeting moment. They were safe. That was all that mattered.
“Haha… I’m glad…”
A weak laugh escaped my lips as the tension in my body began to fade. The pounding in my ears dulled, replaced by a strange sense of peace.
As long as Satsuki and the others were unharmed, it was worth it. Lying on my back, I tilted my head to take in the annoyingly flawless blue sky overhead. It felt cruelly indifferent, as if mocking the absurdity of my final moments.
Still, I couldn’t help but smirk. Raising a trembling fist into the air, I let a wry smile tug at the corners of my mouth.
—How does it feel, having your scripted scenario turned on its head?
With that silent declaration aimed at whatever cosmic force was responsible for all this, my thoughts began to fade. Darkness crept in, soft and consuming.
Serves you right, you bastard.
