- The Former Holy Knight. Having Lost My Job and Childhood Friend, I Decided to Start a Dark Guild
- Chapter 66 - The LeBlanc Family's Reward
Thus, the assault incident on the LeBlanc family concluded, with both Jean LeBlanc and Elena LeBlanc being safely protected.
Even several days later, the capital is still abuzz with talk of the assault. Today’s capital newspaper prominently featured Cecil, with the headline “Hero Cecil Wave, Holy Knight Commander, splendidly captures the heretics who attacked Duke LeBlanc and prevented the abduction of Elena LeBlanc.”
Kano, spreading the paper, said, “I think we played a pretty significant role too, but all the capital newspaper writes about is Don’s ex, huh? Ah, this page is about Don’s ex, too!”
“Well, that’s how it is. We’re behind the scenes and just a small Dark Guild. No one’s interested in what we did. And are you still hung up on Cecil?”
Since then, Kano has mentioned “the ex” meaningfully every chance she gets. My words to Cecil at our parting, “Running around the capital with you was truly fun,” had stuck with her.
Kano said, “Because that means, while Don’s important family was desperately fleeing, Don himself was enjoying a reunion date with his ex!”
“No, no, that’s not how it was at all!” I tried to explain away, turning my eyes back to the paper.
As Kano said, the capital newspaper did not mention us, the Holy Knight’s rebellion, or Capone’s involvement in this assault. It was all about Cecil’s heroic tale.
The unknowing citizens of the capital reading this article would think that Saintess Cecil defeated the villains and all’s well that ends, but the situation is quite the opposite.
A noble family of the LeBlanc class was certainly involved in this assault. Once the mastermind is identified, the LeBlanc family will surely take some action, including retaliation, which means the possibility of the country splitting apart.
Allowing such a rebellion to happen makes it clear that Cecil doesn’t have control over the Holy Knights. Considering the current situation ripe with the threat of civil war, it’s hard to believe that the Holy Knights, as they are now, can navigate through this.
However, the only ones who would be pleased with the weakening of the Holy Knight Order are the Dark Guilds, not the royal family or the nobility. It begs the question: who exactly created this situation?
Fed up with thinking, I threw the capital newspaper onto the desk. After all, issues concerning the royal family, nobility, or the Holy Knight Order are beyond my control. My focus should solely be on managing the guild.
Due to our investment in the artisans of the Loser’s District and the increase in our ranks of heretics, the Michino Family’s finances are quite strained. Our earnings still heavily rely on La Bohème and the LeBlanc family and remain unstable.
And now, unusually, the reward from the LeBlanc family, which we were counting on, is delayed. Normally, we would need to negotiate with the LeBlanc family to deliver materials to the artisans living in the Loser’s District, but that hasn’t been possible.
Given the LeBlanc family’s dire situation, it’s understandable that a small Dark Guild like ours would be put on the back burner.
As I pondered over our financial strategies, Kano’s sharp ears twitched. “Don, something is approaching the city.”
“Capone?”
“There’s a report coming in from Sokrates. I’m connecting it to you.”
Through Kano’s skills, a report from a man named “Sokrates,” an escaped heretic tasked with guarding the Loser’s District and finding cats, entered my mind. Sokrates, a bald man over two meters tall who prefers close combat, is surprisingly good at finding cats.
“Ten carriages are passing through the main street of the district. All can be destroyed, but Don, what do you want to do?”
I looked out the window before responding, “Let them pass.”
Soon after, I stepped outside the guild headquarters. Before long, a line of carriages had formed in front of the guild.
A gentleman in fine clothes slowly alighted from a carriage and bowed deeply.
“Lord Michino, thank you very much for protecting the LeBlanc family the other day. I apologize for the delay.”
He then handed over a heavy leather bag. The reward for this request was especially generous, with a bonus of fifty gold coins on top. That’s twenty-five thousand times the reward we’re paying Sokrates for his cat-finding mission. As I was taken aback, the envoy from the LeBlanc family continued.
“We’ve also brought the malt, tanned leather, and ingots of iron and copper you previously requested. The master is very grateful for the Michino Family’s efforts this time. Please feel free to use them as you wish.”
