- The Former Holy Knight. Having Lost My Job and Childhood Friend, I Decided to Start a Dark Guild
- Chapter 39 - A Narrow Escape
Kano and I escaped the colossal castle, dashing desperately through the royal capital. By the time we returned to the Loser’s District, night had already fallen.
Seeing the familiar streets bustling with townspeople and the usual line-up of stalls, I finally felt the weight lift off my shoulders.
Tears welling up, Kano exclaimed, “Don, we made it out of the colossal castle alive, didn’t we?!”
“Yes.”
“And we stole the holy relic from the colossal castle, didn’t we?!”
“Yes, that’s what you’d call a successful mission.”
“I’m so glad I could come back with you, Don!” she said, embracing me while trembling. Unsurprisingly, Kano was shaking; she had taken a direct hit from Cecil’s holy magic.
Looking back, I could see the colossal castle, illuminated by the moonlight, standing tall in the distance. Just the thought of having infiltrated that massive fortress’s dungeons and tangled with two of the Holy Knights’ finest sent shivers down my spine.
It was truly a close call. I knew Cecil could cast multiple holy spells simultaneously, but the more she cast, the weaker each spell’s power became. This was something she had told me herself. Indeed, when Cecil began her incantation, the lights in the dungeon dimmed, a testament to this fact. I instructed Kano to use her Shadow Walk once more.
So, when Cecil removed my helmet, we were still there.
Next, Cecil launched an explosive holy spell to purge the undead within the cave. At that moment, the bindings weakened, and we shed our armor to escape the chaos that ensued.
Kano looked at me and asked, “But why don’t you seem happy, Don? Ah! I get it because Cecil-sama is your ex-girlfriend.”
Even though I had brought it up, I had no choice but to remain silent.
“Don’t worry, Don. The leader of those holy maidens can handle a few undead without any trouble. Her movements were nothing short of the strongest.”
“Well, yes, that’s true.”
Choosing that skill at the last moment was based on the belief that Cecil could easily handle the undead with her fully maxed-out holy attributes. Indeed, Cecil’s performance was extraordinary, sweeping away legendary undead that one would only find in old bestiaries.
Perhaps Cecil and Lilith were holding back, observing the situation. I had taken their blows head-on, but if they had seriously attacked, we would likely be in prison now. It was a dangerous moment indeed.
However, upon reflection, letting intruders like us escape was a blunder for a leader. It’s hard to be happy about Cecil’s position, knowing she’s probably quite upset about this rare mistake.
“Also, Don, I had no idea you could control monsters.”
“That? That’s not my skill. It’s Nina’s skill.”
Kano’s eyes widened. “You can use Nina-chan’s skill?”
I nodded. “The hit from Cecil’s holy magic unlocked it.”
As I explained the unlocked skill, Kano was astonished, saying it seemed like an incredible ability.
“But that means you can freely use my skills, too, right? I want to be useful to you, Don, but now I feel completely useless.”
“Kano, prepare a letter to report our successful quest to Duke LeBlanc. And,” I paused, “could you look into what happened at the convent where Nina was living?”
