- The Former Holy Knight. Having Lost My Job and Childhood Friend, I Decided to Start a Dark Guild
- Chapter 29 - Don is Targeted
On a day off from work, I entrusted Seneca with the main house’s security and headed to the tavern with Kano and Nina. If the Gambino Family had sent Kirke, they would clearly target a newly opened establishment.
Stepping out onto the street and heading towards the tavern, it seemed there was no damage for the time being.
Kano let out a relieved expression. “I was worried about what we’d do if our precious shop got blown up.”
“Kano, can’t you use your search skills to find the magician’s location?”
Kano shook his head. “I feel an ominous presence throughout the city but can’t pinpoint the location.”
So, it was as I thought. There are those in the Holy Knights with search skills, but they’ve failed to locate and have let that witch escape multiple times accurately. She’s likely using some skill or magic to erase her presence and hide. I turned to Nina.
“Nina, has the Demon Lord said anything?”
Nina pointed down the street. “The Demon Lord says something is over there.”
That direction was on the outskirts of Loser’s District, with no notable buildings except Fatty Pitt’s brewery. My body moved independently as I thought about keeping watch in front of the shop.
“Everyone, get down!”
I shouted, covering Kano and Nina. The next moment, a loud explosion echoed through Loser’s District. As the blast settled and I looked around, smoke was rising from the direction of Fatty Pitt’s brewery.
No doubt about it. That was the kind of explosion magic Kirke favored. What’s happening? Why was Fatty Pitt’s brewery targeted?
Kirke, a former low-ranking knight, didn’t seem like someone I could handle, but my feet naturally moved towards Fatty Pitt’s brewery.
The brewery was destroyed by the explosion, turning into ruins. As I cautiously approached, a familiar hoarse voice reached my ears.
“Hey, you! My precious brewery’s a mess! You’re going to pay for this!”
Then, a woman’s cold voice followed. “Hey, fatty over there. Are you the Don of this city? I was ordered to blow up a liquor store run by the Dark Guild encroaching on this territory.”
“I am the Don of this city, no doubt about it! Hey, you guys, don’t just stand there scared; do something about her!”
“Fatty Pitt, there’s no way we can win against her. You saw that explosion! Running away is our best bet!”
Following that voice, Fatty Pitt’s followers started fleeing from the ruins. Pitt’s anguished cries echoed around.
“You guys, I’ll double your salary, so don’t leave me!!!”
As I rushed toward Pitt’s cries, I instinctively felt frozen.
In front of Pitt, crouching on the ground, turning pale, stood a woman with an emotionless, cold expression. She was the ruthless Kirke, a member of the Gambino Family and a central figure in the recent conflicts within the royal capital. She had blown up rival families’ taverns and gambling dens without hesitation, killing many civilians along the way. Her infamous reputation preceded her, and her face was one I had seen on wanted posters numerous times. There was no mistaking it.
Kirke was now the most wanted heretic in the royal capital by Cecil. I had never imagined encountering her at Pitt’s Brewery.
Kirke, looking down at Pitt, suddenly turned to us. “And who might you be?”
“Your target is us. Don’t harm the innocent bystanders!”
“So, you’re with the Dark Guild that’s been encroaching on our territory? I never believed this guy could take down Sofia Gracier, so this makes more sense. But since he’s claiming to be the Don, I guess I’ll have to eliminate him just in case.”
Saying this, Kirke turned her hand towards Pitt, who screamed, “I’m not the Don! The real Don is over there! I’m just an ordinary fat man!!”
Ignoring his words, Kirke continued her magical incantation. Panicked, I grabbed Nina and signaled to Kano, “Kano! Take Pitt and get out of here!”
A strong shockwave hit us the next moment, and the blast engulfed our vision.
