Chapter 53: The Empress, Facing the Two of Them
ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
“…Liam-kun is MY Liam-kun!”
Meria-san said so while unleashing a fire spell toward Lydia-san and Empress-san. Lydia-san and Empress-san blocked the flames. Then, Lydia-san charged at Meria-san while exclaiming.
“Liam-san is NOT your Liam-san!”
Lydia-san said while swinging her sword, which was infused with wind magic. The swing of her sword caused a gusting slash to fly toward both Meria-san and Empress-san, who stood in front of her. Meria-san avoided the gust by using wind magic to propel herself upward while Empress-san blocked it with her ice wall. The powerful wind gusts shattered the ice wall and Empress-san calmly said.
“Interesting… In that case, I will show you two my strength to prove that I am worthy to be Liam’s woman.”
Empress-san said as she clashed swords with Lydia-san using the ice sword she had conjured in her left hand. Simultaneously, she also unleashed a lightning spell toward Meria-san with her right hand. In the first place, this was supposed to be a one-on-one fight where Lydia-san and Meria-san would each measure their strength against Empress-san. But somehow the battle had turned chaotic. It had become a three-way battle instead. The battle continued for a while until eventually, the three of them stopped moving. Empress-san then calmly said.
“As expected from those who travel with Liam. You both are highly skilled. Putting Liam aside, I can say with confidence that you two are the strongest opponents I’ve ever faced.”
Hearing those words, Lydia-san also responded in a calm tone.
“…I can say the same to you too. Considering you were able to put up a decent fight against Liam-san, you are certainly a very powerful individual.”
Following Lydia-san’s words, Meria-san added.
“Indeed. Not only you were able to stand on equal grounds against Liam-kun, but you’re able to hold your own feet against me. You’re clearly pretty powerful~”
“From just a glance alone, I could tell that the two of you are strong, but after facing you two directly in battle like this… I was once again reminded of how strong you two really are. I imagine you two are feeling the same as me after watching my previous fight from the audience seat.”
Empress-san said as she addressed them both.
“Now that you’ve come to understand my strength, I just need you to accept that Liam is going to become my man─”
“Absolutely not!”
“Unfortunately, we cannot accept that.”
Empress-san seemed a bit surprised to be rejected by both of them at the same time, but since the three of them had fought enough to know each other’s strength, they all decided to leave the arena for now.
“Where are we going now?”
“I already had a feeling that you were going to follow us, but… Hahhh… Empress-chan is really going to tag along, huh?”
“Why of course. I have to follow my man.”
“I will remind you once more. Liam-san is NOT your man.”
“…”
“…”
An awkward silence ensued between the three of them. Feeling uncomfortable with the tension, I spoke up to break the silence.
“A-Anyway, everyone must be tired, right? Let’s head to the inn and get some rest first!”
“If Liam-san says so, then I will follow suit.”
“Yeah, sounds good enough to me~”
Lydia-san and Meria-san readily agreed, but Empress-san then said.
“Of course, I have no objections either. However, if you’re going to stay somewhere, why not come to my castle instead of finding an inn?”
“Huh? Ca-Ca-Castle?!”
“Yes. There are plenty of vacant rooms in my castle. I won’t have any problem hosting all of you in my castle.”
“T-That’s… That’s very kind of you, but I think sleeping in a castle would make me nervous. I’m afraid I won’t be able to fall asleep…”
I expressed my genuine concern. Empress-san quickly closed the distance between us and said.
“Don’t worry. If you can’t sleep, I’ll lie beside you and help you fall asleep.”
“..!!”
“..!!”
Both Lydia-san and Meria-san widened their eyes at Empress-san’s bold words. They immediately interjected.
“Absolutely not!”
“I won’t allow that!”
“Oh? But what’s the problem with me sleeping beside my man? After all, Liam is─”
And just like before, the three of them started arguing again. The argument dragged on until I finally felt I had to step in. Fortunately, they all listened to me. We then decided to head to the inn for the time being to avoid future arguments.

Chapter 54: Liam, Preventing a Surprise Attack
ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
“Haah~ Empress-chan, you’re really bold… Or rather, you’re really determined. It feels like you’re a bit excessive, like, you’re not just being proactive toward Liam-kun. I wonder why you’re so persistent, Empress-chan?”
“A bit excessive…? I’m not entirely sure what you’re talking about, but if you’re referring to how I insist that Liam is my man… Well, just like what I said earlier. It’s because I’ve already decided that I only wanted a man stronger than myself. Not only Liam is strong, but his personality is good too. I really don’t see why I need to hesitate in making him my man.”
“I agree with you on that, but is that really all? Is there another reason that prompted you to be this aggressive?”
Meria-san asked again and after a brief pause, Empress-san said.
“I inherited my position from my father, the previous emperor of the Demon Kingdom. Of course, I was able to inherit this position not just because I was his daughter, but because I had the strength to take on this role.”
Empress-san took another brief pause before continuing.
“And the reason why I desire to be with a man stronger than myself is because of my mother’s influence. She was bound to my father, a man who’s stronger than herself. However, this particular desire had become a problem of mine for years…”
“There’s no man stronger than you yet.”
Lydia-san said, seemingly able to predict Empress-san’s response. Empress-san nodded and replied.
“Exactly. My mother was really strong, strong enough that she could’ve become the empress had my father not existed. Of course, as the child born from their union, I possess exceptional strength and magic power. I’ve never once slacked off in my training either. Therefore, I wasn’t able to find a man stronger than me. I was worried that this bloodline would die in my generation, so I started taking on challengers in order to find my man and finally… I was able to meet Liam. His strength and good personality are enough reason for me to wish to be with him.”
I was certainly shocked beyond belief when Empress-san expressed her desire to make me her man. But after hearing her story now, I guess I could understand the reason why.
Meria-san then sighed and said.
“I see… Well, at least I can understand your reasoning, but… I have one more thing I’d like to ask. Is that okay with you?”
“Sure. I will answer anything I can.”
Empress-san said so. With a serious expression on her face, Meria-san asked.
“There’s someone from this kingdom who tried to destroy the Elf Kingdom. Do you know anything about it, Empress-chan?”
“Someone from this kingdom tried to destroy the Elf Kingdom? This is the first time I’ve heard about that.”
“If the Empress herself doesn’t know anything about it, it’s going to be pretty difficult for us to track them down.”
“That’s true~ But still, it’s not enough reason for me to let that person off the hook.”
It was only natural for Meria-san to be this angry. After all, her homeland was almost destroyed. I couldn’t forgive that person either, whoever it was.
We eventually reached the inn while talking to each other like this.
“So this is where you all are staying?”
“Yes! The room is good and comfortable to be in!”
“I’m glad to hear you have a positive opinion about our country’s inn.”
“Now then, let’s go inside and get some rest—”
But before Meria-san could finish her sentence, I suddenly sensed a trace of magic rushing toward me from behind. I turned around and blew away the monster that was charging at me with a gust of wind magic. The other three were quick to notice the lingering presence of the monster. They all turned around almost simultaneously.
“Impressive as always, Liam-san. It’s amazing you were able to defend against a swift surprise attack like that.”
“That’s right!~ Liam-kun is amazing, just like always!”
“Yeah, as expected from my man.”
“Tha-Thank you… But… Why is there a monster in a place like this?”
I said thank you for the compliment, but when I was expressing my confusion for the existence of the monster in the middle of the city, I suddenly sensed another magic trace nearby. I immediately shifted my gaze to that direction and there, I saw a person donned in a tuxedo while wearing a long hat with a suspicious-looking mask.
“Long hat, masked face and a tuxedo…! That guy! He’s the one who tried to destroy the Elf Kingdom!”
“Huh?!”
Meria-san exclaimed as she noticed the man. While I was still surprised by her statement, Lydia-san and Empress-san then said.
“And he’s foolish enough to try to ambush Liam-san… However, thanks to Liam-san’s exceptional strength, his surprise attack was completely thwarted. Luckily, Liam-san didn’t get hurt, but that doesn’t mean we can just let him off after what he had done to the Elf Kingdom.”
“A demon who dared to act without my permission and about to harm Liam… I shall personally deliver his punishment myself. That scoundrel shall pay for his sins.”
The three of them unleashed a powerful magic aura from their bodies in unison and the masked man slipped away into the dark alley.
“…There’s no way I’m going to let you escape!”
“Yeah, let’s chase after him!”
With that, we left the inn and pursued the masked man who had tried to destroy the Elf Kingdom.
