Chapter 32: Meria, Officially Joins the Party

Meria and Lydia continued to defeat monster after monster for about 20 minutes when something began to change with the giant tree. 

“…!! That’s…”

The leaves of the giant tree were shining. Lydia, unfamiliar with this sight, was in a deep surprise upon noticing the change. However, Meria remained unfazed. She knew once enough magic power had been supplied to the tree’s roots, the magic power would flow to each individual leaf.

“Liam-kun, you really did it…”

Her voice was filled with joy. Then, within the next moment, all the monsters around the giant tree were obliterated by the barrier. Every monster that had appeared in Magistus suddenly disappeared into smithereens.

“Lydia-chan! It looks like Liam-kun succeeded in restoring the giant tree!”

“It seems so. As expected of Liam-san.”

“Yeah… Honestly, just imagining what would’ve happened if Liam-kun wasn’t here today gives me chills.”

Fortunately, Liam was present today to save Meria. In fact, it wasn’t just Meria. Liam had saved the whole Elf Kingdom. Meria had been drawn to his immense magic power when they first met. “Lydia-chan, I know you’re not too fond of me, but thank you for fighting alongside me today despite the disagreements between us. Thank you for holding your sword for the sake of the Elf Kingdom.”

Meria expressed her genuine gratitude to Lydia. Not only Liam, but Lydia had also helped the Elf Kingdom a lot. Lydia paused for a moment before she replied. 

“I simply acted in a way that would not bring shame to Astoria’s name.”

“But still, thank you.”

Meria said softly with a smile on her face. At first, Meria had only seen Lydia as a serious and rigid knight who always clung to Liam’s side like a pest. But now, her impression of Lydia had changed. 

Lydia-chan is actually really kind. 

A brand new emotion was growing inside Meria’s heart. She wanted to protect these two kind souls, Liam and Lydia. 

“Alright, Lydia-chan! Let’s head back to Liam-kun!”

“Yes, let’s do that.”

And so, the two of them quickly cast teleportation magic to head toward the center of the giant tree’s root, where Liam was. Upon seeing Liam’s figure near the tree’s roots, Meria shouted.

“LIAM-KUNNNNNNNNNNN! THANK YOU FOR YOUR HARD WO─Huh!?”

“Liam-san?!?!”

Right after seeing the sight of Liam, the two gasped in surprise and hurried over to him. Liam was crying. 

“Li-Liam-san, is there something wrong?”

“Liam-kun, you’ve healed the great tree! Everything is alright now, so why…?”

Though they didn’t know why he was crying, but both of them tried to comfort him. Liam, who was trying his hardest to stifle his tearful voice, replied to them.

“I-I’m sorry… It’s just… Thinking about how the people I used to adventure with actually said such terrible things and actually tried to carry their horrible plans out… I… It just made me so sad…”

“The people you used to adventure with… You mean those guys, right? What did they do?”

After that, Liam explained in great detail that Zayn and his group were trying to destroy the giant tree. He told them they were trying to wipe the Elf Kingdom from the map so they could become the heroes of the demon race. After hearing this, Meria muttered. Her eyes were downcast and her voice was filled with unyielding rage. 

“Those scums… Not only did they put the Elf Kingdom in danger, but they even dared to make Liam-kun sad… I should’ve just burned them to cinder instead of healing them with magic…”

Right after Meria, Lydia also spoke in a similarly insidious tone with her eyes downcast. 

“No, even if you didn’t burn them to cinders, I should’ve torn those people to pieces… The sin for making Liam-san cry needs to be paid in full…”

The two of them lost their composure for a moment, but after seeing Liam’s tear-streaked face, they immediately regained their calm. Meria then spoke again. 

“But Liam-kun, you already blew those guys away, right? How about if we just forget about them? From now on, Lydia-chan and I will always be by your side anyway!”

“?! Me-Meria-san… Are you saying you will join me in my journey too?”

Liam’s eyes regained their light after hearing Meria’s words. Seeing this, Meria smiled brightly before she said again. 

“Of course! Actually, let me ask you properly again… Liam-kun, may I travel with you? Just like Lydia-chan?”

“Yes! Absolutely! I would be really happy if Meria-san ill join us too!”

Liam replied in an excited voice. Smiling at him, Meria turned to Lydia. 

“And you? Lydia-chan, what do you think?”

“If Liam-san is fine with it, then I have no objections.”

“Yay! Now I’m officially part of your two’s party!”

“That’s right….! But, well… I’ve always thought of Meria-san as a part of our team already!”

“-!! Thank you, Liam-kun! But, you know, it feels different now that we’re officially a team. It makes me so happy! I’m looking forward to what’s ahead of us!”

Melia’s cheerful spirit made Liam completely forget about Zayn and the others. His moods turned bright again and he began chatting happily with the two of them again. However, despite the smiles on Meria and Lydia’s face, the two of them had silently resolved. They had swore in their hearts that if they encountered Zayn and his group again, they would remember the anger they had felt now. The crimes for trying to destroy the Elf Kingdom and for making Liam cry. They swore they wouldn’t show any mercy to those scums.
