Chapter 30: Liam, Getting Serious

Lydia was cutting down monster after another with her sword while Meria took down the flying monsters one by one with her magic. The elven guards were mainly just assisting the two of them. The monster wasn’t particularly strong, at least for Lydia and Meria. So, they both came to the conclusion that it was unlikely for these monsters to reach the giant tree, but… Their numbers were numerous. It would take a considerable amount of time to finish all these monsters. Meria surveyed the situation from the rear. Then, she noticed a monster heading toward Lydia and called out to her.

“Lydia-chan~! A monster that seems to be highly resistant to physical attack is heading your way, but do you want me to take it down for you?”

“That won’t be necessary…【Magic Slash】.”

Lydia transformed the entire blade of her sword into pure magic power and cut the physical-resistant monster in half.

“As expected from Lydia-chan~!”

“Is it alright for you to be worrying about me so much? It looks like a monster resistant to magic is heading your way as well.”

“Yeah, I know~”

Without taking her eyes off Lydia, Meria made several tree roots sprout from the ground and pierced the magic-resistant monster with them.

“Technically speaking, the roots are magic attack, so the magic-resistant monster is not a problem for me, right?~”

“…I knew it. Your strength, at least, seems reliable enough.”

Although the tree roots were sprouting from the help of Meria’s magic, but the nature of the tree roots itself were still physical, not magical. Hence why the magic-resistant monster could be easily defeated by her. After they complimented each other,  Lydia and Meria resumed wiping out the monsters, though Meria also kept her attention on the giant tree.

“As expected of Liam-kun, I can feel the giant tree slowly regaining its strength… At this rate, it should take Liam-kun about ten more minutes to finish healing the giant tree.”

From the moment she met Liam, Meria had recognized the unfathomable depth of his abilities.

Normally speaking, Liam’s magic power would be immeasurable, but as someone who had mastered magic to the extent that she was called a Grand Mage and as someone who was standing as the best of the best in the realm of magic, Meria could at least see the vastness of his potential. Especially the potential of Liam’s magic.

“At that time, I approached him thinking I could ask for his help to supply the giant tree with some of his magic power, but I never imagined I’d end up entrusting the survival of the Elf Kingdom to Liam-kun…”

Although Liam had cemented a significant presence in her mind, but Liam’s presence was growing even larger as of now. That new feeling was, in some way, comforting to her.

I was struggling to suppress the overflowing magic power from my body while Zayn-san and the others were putting their hands in front of them, trying to resist the pressure from my magic. But… I really couldn’t care less about that. 

“What… Did you just say? Did you say you’re going to destroy the giant tree?”

“H-Hey! Calm dow─”

“That’s right! We’re going to destroy this giant tree and become heroes! So don’t get in our way!”

“…Heroes? What are you talking about? If you destroy this giant tree, the Elf Kingdom will be destroyed.”

“Exactly! We’re going to destroy the Elf Kingdom and become the heroes of the demon race!”

Destroy the Elf Kingdom and become the heroes of the demon race…? I really didn’t understand what Bella-san and Radd-san were talking about. If the Elf Kingdom was destroyed, many elves would be hurt in return. The destruction of the Elf Kingdom would only lead to sadness… So many people would be sad, so how come destroying the Elf Kingdom would make someone a hero?

“Although I don’t understand what the two of you are saying at all, but Meria-san has entrusted the future of the Elf Kingdom to me. So, if you and your group are here to destroy the giant tree, I will stop you.”

“Entrusted to you…? You really make my skin crawl. I really hate that self-righteous side of yours. I see you’re still keeping that attitude with you. Disgusting!”

Zayn-san said as he gathered his magic power into his fist.

“Those two S-rank adventurers are too busy dealing with the monster horde, huh? So that leaves just the three of us against you, alone.”

“That’s right.”

“Someone got in the way during our last fight, but this time…I’m gonna knock you out! Let’s do this, guys!!”

“Yeah!!”

“Beat him to pulp~!!”

After that, just like usual, Bella-san and Radd-san cast enhancement magic on Zayn-san. Zayn-san then came charging at me with his fist formed in a punch. With Bella-san’s enhancement magic, Zayn-san was currently on par with an  S-rank adventurer. I doubt I could stand against Zayn-san without moving my left hand from the giant tree. I couldn’t stop channeling my magic power into the giant tree yet, but… I didn’t want to see Meria-san’s sad face after she lost her homeland. Hence why, I had to protect this place. I had to. Without fail. 

And so… I decided it was time for me to get serious and defeat Zayn-san and his group.
