Chapter 29: Zayn, Encountering Liam

Lydia and Meria were on their way to the outside of the giant tree as they took in the sight of the swarm of monsters gathering. There were various types of monsters gathered. Some walking on the ground, others flying in the air. However, the types of monsters weren’t what Meria and Lydia worried about. 

“The numbers…”

“There’s no way monsters could suddenly appear right in the middle of Magistus. Someone must’ve intentionally summoned these monsters to destroy the giant tree.”

“In other words, the goal of the culprit is the destruction of the Elf Kingdom?”

“Most probably. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have summoned all these monsters right near the giant tree. After all, the timing couldn’t be more perfect. The giant tree is getting weak. All of these monsters must be sent to destroy the giant tree.”

Meria said as she gathered the magic power in her body. Her body was radiating so much power, so much so that the air around her seemed to ripple. Meria then smiled coldly. 

“To think someone would have the guts to try and destroy my Elf Kingdom… I don’t know who you are, but I’ll be sure to wipe you out to smithereens.”

“What a commendable fighting spirit. Alright. Shall we get started now? Regardless of your personality, I acknowledge your strength. I can’t wait to fight alongside you in this battle.”

“You’re pretty straightforward when it comes to power, huh? But well… If I may be honest, there’s no swordsman I can trust to take the frontline. Only you, Lydia-chan.”

“I shall live up to your expectations. I swear, with the dignity of the name Astoria at the stake.”

Lydia said before she drew her sword.

“I believe in Liam-kun. He will definitely cure the giant tree, so until then… We need to protect it from the monsters outside.”

Meria said as she assumed a battle stance. She began conjuring magic with both hands. Within the next moment, Lydia used a teleportation spell to charge straight into the monster horde. Lydia took the monster’s attention while Meria unleashed a wide-area spell to target the flying monsters in the sky. The two of them began exterminating the horde of monsters.

“Ha! Even though the giant tree is very important to the Elf Kingdom, but the security around here is really lacking! We just need to destroy the tree and then, we would become the heroes of the demon race!”

Zayn exclaimed loudly as he ran straight toward the giant tree. One of his party members, Bella, said to him. 

“What do you want to do after you become a hero and get a lot of money?”

“Great question. Well, since we’re going to become the heroes of the demon race, the demons will surely follow us in whatever we do. So first, I’m thinking of building a castle for the three of us.”

“Whoaaa! I love it! But…If I’m not wrong, the Demon Kingdom is being ruled by a female emperor, right? I heard she’s exceptionally strong and incredibly beautiful. Won’t we get in trouble if we build a castle without her permission first?”

“In that case, we will just need to exploit our title as heroes of the demon race to rally an army against her! We will take her down!”

Upon hearing Zayn’s answer, the male party member, Radd, exclaimed loudly.

“Ooh! As expected from Zayn! You’re a genius!”

Pleased by the compliment, Zayn said to him. 

“Well, I’m your leader after all… Just follow my lead and I will ensure you two will live a great life!”

“We will follow you for life!”

“Yeah!~ Hero Zayn!”

“Hero Zayn, huh… I like the ring of it… But, you know. You guys will also become heroes. Hero Bella and Hero Radd. That’s why, you two better start acting like a proper hero from now on, okay?”

“Got it!”

“Leave it to me!~”

The three of them continued talking while running and soon enough, they spotted the root of the giant tree. The center of the root was just ahead of them. Zayn grinned widely as the giant tree’s root came into view. A twisted smile was formed on his face as he shouted at his party members. 

“You guys! Everything we just talked about won’t amount to anything if we don’t destroy that giant tree up ahead! I heard the roots are easy to destroy, so let’s smash it in an instant!”

“Yeah!!”

“Let’s do it!~”

Zayn’s words raised the morale of his party. He led the charge towards the root of the giant tree, running ahead from the two of them. Five seconds, four seconds, three seconds, two seconds, one seconds…

“Here we are! Time to go wild and─Huh…?”

Just a moment ago, Zayn was so confident with himself. But now, as he was standing before the roots of the giant tree, he saw someone he had least expected to see. Liam. Zayn was left speechless. His face was frozen in shock. 

Sensing someone coming, Liam turned to Zayn. 

“Zayn-san? What are you doing here?”

“We-Well, that’s my line! Why are you here?!”

“I’m supplying my magic power to the giant tree to help it become healthy again.”

Upon hearing that, Zayn thought to himself. 

We can use this guy. 

He believed that if he claimed to have come for the same reason, the naive Liam would immediately believe him. He just needed to find the right opportunity to destroy the roots of the giant tree after he gained Liam’s trust. Confident that he would soon become the hero of the demon race, Zayn began to speak. 

“Well, actually, I—”

But before Zayn could finish his sentence, his party members had caught up to him too. They then began shouting loudly. 

“We will destroy the giant tree and become heroes!”

“We will defeat the Demon Empress and become the empress myself!!”

“-?! You two!”

Zayn exclaimed, trying to stop them, but the deed had been done. The two of them just continued blabbering on, oblivious to the existence of Liam in front of them.

A surge of magic power exuded from Liam’s body as he said coldly. 

“Destroy the giant tree…?”
