Chapter 28: Liam, Entrusted

“Here we are!~”

Despite various arguments ensuing between us, we didn’t stop walking and we soon arrived at the root of the giant tree. 

“So this is the root of the giant tree…”

Just as expected from the root of the giant tree, it was enormous. However, there was only one spot of the roots that was emitting light. That spot was filled with magic power,  the same magic power I had felt from the teleportation magic circle. In other words…

“So I just need to channel my magic power into that glowing spot?”

“That’s right! As expected from Liam-kun!”

Meria-san said cheerfully. But then, Lydia-san took on a thoughtful expression as she added. 

“I’m confident the giant tree should have no qualms about Liam-san’s top notch magic power, but there’s another thing I’m worried about. For how long does Liam-san need to channel his magic power?”

“Hmm… This giant tree is not only connected to the teleportation circle that Liam-kun fixed before, but to all the teleportation magic circles in the entire nation and the plants in the Elf Kingdom too. So… Based on Liam-kun’s magic power… A few seconds probably won’t be enough. Maybe around ten to thirty minutes?”

Ten to thirty minutes… Faster than I had expected. In that case, it wouldn’t be long before the giant tree returned to normal.

“Even with Liam-san’s magic power, it still take ten to thirty minutes… As expected from the giant tree of the Elf Kingdom…”

“Yes!~ That’s why~ Liam-kun! Let’s get started right away─”

Meria-san was in the middle of her speech when I suddenly felt a surge of magic power coming very close from the giant tree. The magic power I felt wasn’t particularly high, but there were so many of them!

“What’s with this reaction…”

“Monsters?! Why are there monsters right in the middle of Magistus?!”

Something unthinkable had just occurred. Meria-san looked really surprised, but she quickly regained her composure and continued on. 

“There’s no point in thinking about why. Liam-kun, could you keep channeling your magic power into the roots of the giant tree while also preparing a barrier around the tree just to be safe?”

“Alright. Should I set up the barrier around the root of the tree?”

“Yeah, the giant tree is quite sturdy on the outside due to its unique nature, but the roots are practically defenseless because the giant tree is not well. A few attacks from weak monsters could destroy the root and if the root gets destroyed, the giant tree itself will also get destroyed. If the giant tree gets destroyed, all the plants in the Elf Kingdom will also wither away and if the plants in the Elf Kingdom wither away… The Elf Kingdom will get destroyed.”

“Wha-?!”

The-The Elf Kingdom would be destroyed?! I was shocked beyond belief upon hearing that. She looked really serious as she continued on.

“But… If the giant tree returns to normal, the barrier will return. No monsters will be able to get through the barrier. In that case, it will be our victory. Although I act like this, but I’m still emotionally attached to my birthplace, the Elf Kingdom. I don’t want the Elf Kingdom to get destroyed, so… Please, Liam-kun… Could you please lend us your power to protect the giant tree, no. To protect the Elf Kingdom?”

In other words, the survival of the Elf Kingdom was at the stake here. I was so naive, thinking that the problem with the giant tree would get resolved easily… But of course, I shouldn’t be so naive. The giant tree was a crucial existence for the elf kingdom. I had to get serious. 

I quickly adjusted my mindset and returned Meria-san’s serious gaze. I looked into her eyes as I replied.

“I understand. I will absolutely do everything in my power to protect the Elf Kingdom!”

I said so clearly. There was no hint of hesitation in my voice. Meria-san hen smiled and said. 

“I feel more reassured than anything else since the one saying that is Liam-kun. Well then, I will leave the root to you. I will head over there to deal with the monsters. Lydia-chan, will you come with me?”

“While I prefer not to be apart from Liam-san even for a moment, but the livelihood of the elves is at stake here. I can’t afford to be selfish. I understand. I will come with you and deal with the monsters too.”

“Thank you, Lydia-chan. Alright. Liam-kun! We will see you later!”

“Liam-san, we will surely meet again shortly.”

And so, the two of them used teleportation magic to quickly leave the root of the giant tree.

I accepted the responsibility entrusted to me and began channeling my magic power into the giant tree. I had to protect Meria-chan’s precious hometown!

Zayn, who had been waiting in the opposite direction from where the monsters had appeared, confirmed that the guards had all headed off to deal with the monsters before stepping forward boldly.

With that said, Zayn and the others started running towards the roots. To be precise, the center of the giant tree’s roots. They were confident they could destroy the roots since the root should be completely unguarded. Zayn was smiling to himself as he imagined living as a hero of the demon race in the near future.

He was oblivious that Liam was already ahead of him.
