Chapter 028: Dinner And Then
After my father successfully returned from underground, we decided to have dinner. Once he joined us, Father spoke first.
“I’m truly sorry for showing such an embarrassing sight in front of our guests.”
“You really never learn, do you?”
“That’s a man’s romance… I’m sorry.”
When Mother glared at him sharply, Father shrank back. This is the basic power dynamic in our house. Even though Father is older.
Why did they get married? I still haven’t asked, so let’s save that for another time.
Anyway, Mother is the strongest person in this house. Father may be like this now, but he was originally an S-rank adventurer. However, he doesn’t seem to be from the Grand Duchy of Nelba. He won’t tell me the details. He says he’ll tell me when the time comes, but when is that?
Well, even if I think about it, I won’t understand right away. For now, the fact that these two became husband and wife and that I exist is enough.
“Normally, dinner at home is lively. So you three, feel free to speak casually.”
Father, having recovered, spoke amiably to Urka-san and the others. By the way, the seating order was Rosaria-san on the left, then Urka-san, me, and Elena-san.
“Then, cheers!!”
“””Cheers!!”””
We all toasted at Father’s lead (I had juice).
“Al-kun.”
“Yes!!”
Mother spoke to me.
“You still have three more years until you enter the academy.”
“Y-yeah.”
That’s right. In this country, children from ages 7 to 18 are required to attend academy. As for me? In the Grand Duchy, if certain criteria are met, one can be exempted from attending between ages 7 and 12. It requires passing a very difficult exam, which I did.
Exemptions are usually used by nobles — mostly heirs — so they can learn territory management under the current head. I took it because I wanted to work as an adventurer and also to learn management as the next head under Mother’s guidance.
I’ll probably focus mainly on studying management from now on. I wanted to go on more adventures.
“You’re thinking that you won’t be able to adventure anymore, aren’t you?”
“Eh, yes.”
Mother’s words made my heart skip a beat.
“Personally, I’d like you to stop immediately and focus on your studies.”
“…………”
As expected, that’s what Mother wants. I already knew.
“However—”
“Eh?”
Mother showed a gentle smile.
“I’ll allow it just a little.”
“I-is that okay!?”
“Every time I talk with you, I can tell how genuinely fun it is for you.”
“Mom…”
I was so happy that Mother understood. I almost cried.
“You really are your father’s son after all.”
“See? I told you!”
Father said proudly to Mother.
“Indeed.”
The two of them chuckled softly.
“But there is one condition.”
W-what is it? I swallowed hard.
“You must always go with Elena-san and the others.”
“””!!!”””
The three of them widened their eyes.
“You three, please take good care of Al-kun.”
“Leave it to us!!”
“I will definitely protect him!!”
“Yeah, I’ll protect him.”
When Mother said that, the three nodded strongly.
“Fufu, you’ve met some wonderful people.”
Mother smiled, looking satisfied. I was surprised at first, but I also felt somewhat relieved.
“Mother. Is it really okay even though they’re State Guests?”
“It’s fine. Besides, it’s better for the three of them to stay with you, right?”
It’s really okay? I’m so glad. Mother has approved as well.
“Madam. Please let me accompany them too!!”
“Sophia!?”
I was shocked. Sophia becoming an adventurer with me!? When I looked at Mother, she nodded.
“Yes, of course. That’s why you’ve undergone such harsh training, isn’t it?”
“Yes!!”
Just what kind of training did she do? I won’t ask, but it feels terrifying. Still, I can continue adventuring. My emotions felt like they were about to explode.
“Do your best, Al-kun!!”
“Yeah!! Yaaay!!”
I raised my voice loudly without caring who heard and thrust both hands into the air in joy. The three girls and Sophia all looked relieved. I’ll work even harder — so I can balance everything properly and become a worthy next head.
The rest of the meal was fun. There were some incidents — Urka-san drank too much and almost stripped naked, and Rosaria-san got drunk and hugged me tightly.
During all that, Sophia kept taking pictures of me with a crystal camera.
“Sophia. What are you doing?”
“Please don’t mind me.”
“But…”
She’s really close. Way too close, Sophia. Her beautiful cobalt blue eyes are slightly bloodshot.
“Please don’t mind me. Now, go on and eat!!”
“No, I can’t eat when I’m bothered by it.”
“In that case…”
Sophia scooped up some food with a spoon.
“Ahh~n.”
She tried to feed me. That’s fine, but your breathing is way too heavy.
“Sophia. I will do that.”
Elena-san moved in to stop her and did the same for me.
“!? Elena-sama, that’s unfair!!”
Elena-san had a triumphant look on her face.
“Here you go, Master.”
“Ah, thank you!! munch”
I accepted since her kindness made me happy. Elena-san’s face lit up with a bright smile. She looked very pleased.
“Master. Here.”
“Ah, thank you.”
Urka-san also fed me. Being fed “ahh~n” from both sides was embarrassing but happy. Sophia watched with teary eyes… I made her sad.
“Master. What about mine?”
“S-sorry. I got overwhelmed by the momentum.”
Of course I ate hers too. She looked happy afterward. Good.
“My my, you’re so popular.”
“Al, you—!! Why are you so— ouch!! Ouch!!”
Mother pinched Father’s cheek as he looked on enviously. Mother is quite jealous.
After the meal, I went to my room for the first time in a while. It had been cleaned perfectly even while I was gone. As expected.
I plan to go to the guild with everyone tomorrow. My luggage was already in the room.
The moment I got into bed to sleep, it happened.
A magic circle suddenly appeared in the air, and from it—
“Waa!!”
“Kyaa!!”
“Hyaah!!”
Aira-san, Mana-san, and Tina-san came out.
I was surprised at first, but when I saw what the three were gripping tightly, I understood.
They had used that.
Chapter 029: The Fate Of That Party 4 – Aira Side
After being thrown off the carriage, it took us six days to reach Ryuto, where the labyrinth is located.
Until now, Al-kun had stored all our luggage in his extra-dimensional storage, allowing us to travel light. Without that, we each had to carry our own bags, which slowed us down considerably and left everyone exhausted.
“Hey!! Let’s find an inn!!”
Dan called out, and we started looking for a place to stay.
Ryuto, as a labyrinth city, has been developing at an astonishing pace. Many shops and guild branches have been built, and it’s rapidly approaching the level of the third city, Campagna.
When we headed toward the street with many inns, Dan immediately tried to enter a luxury hotel.
“W-wait, Dan-sama!! We don’t have the money. Let’s look for somewhere else.”
“Hah? That village didn’t have any decent places, so I had no choice but to stay there. I’m the next head of a ducal house. How could I possibly stay in some cheap inn!!”
No, if you’re going to brag about being the next head, at least understand the state of your family’s finances.
“Hmph!! Just shut up and follow me.”
Dan ignored our attempts to stop him and entered the luxury hotel. A short while later, he stormed out, furious.
“That innkeeper! I told him I’m the next head of the ducal house and he said ‘So what?’ What a joke!! ‘If you can’t pay, then leave’? How dare he treat me so rudely!!”
No, that person was completely right.
In the end, none of the luxury hotels would accept Dan. Of course, part of it was because we had no money, but after seeing his attitude, it was no surprise they refused.
After desperate persuasion, we finally got him to agree to stay at a normal inn. He was probably tired too and wanted to rest quickly, which worked in our favor. We somehow found an inn and slept like logs.
The next day, we slept until the afternoon due to exhaustion. When we checked Dan’s room, he was still asleep.
While he was sleeping, we prepared for the labyrinth. This was a basic habit for adventurers. Ever since Al-kun joined, he had introduced us to good shops, so we had stopped searching and negotiating ourselves. We went back to how we were when we first started adventuring — looking for shops on our own and requesting maintenance for our equipment.
There were many blacksmiths here, so we found one easily. Since our gear was made with high-grade ores like mithril (from our time as S-rank), the maintenance cost was naturally high. Considering the future, we couldn’t afford to waste money.
After exploring the city a bit, we returned to the inn. By then the sun had set and it was dark. Dan wasn’t in his room. He had probably gone to the entertainment district.
If Al-kun were here, we would have eaten together or talked in his room. With him gone, we gathered in Tina’s room — the one farthest from Dan’s — to discuss our future.
“Now that Al-kun is gone, this party is in danger if we continue like this.”
When I said that, the other two’s faces darkened. They understood too — especially Mana.
“Shouldn’t we just disband?”
“…I think so too, but our families…”
I know. One wrong move from us and we don’t know what might happen to our families. That fear was overwhelming.
But we were reaching our limit. Then,
“I wrote a letter to my father.”
“Mana?”
“I wrote that we’ve reached our limit and I want to disband the party.”
“You did what!!”
“I know it’s risky, but…”
Tears spilled from Mana’s light blue eyes. That said everything.
“Understood.”
“Aira?”
I nodded. Tina tilted her head.
“During the labyrinth exploration, we’ll secretly slip away.”
“Eh!!”
“Aira!? Is that okay?”
The two were shocked, but I continued.
“I know it’s dangerous. But this might actually be our chance.”
“What do you mean by chance?”
I answered Mana’s question.
“During the exploration, we’ll separate from him naturally and claim we got lost during battle.”
“…………”
It wouldn’t be easily forgiven, but getting separated from Dan during a monster attack in combat wasn’t an impossible story. Such things happen often among adventurers. I felt resistance to using that excuse, but we had no other options left.
The day we put the plan into action, Dan had been slacking, so the labyrinth exploration began two days later. During that time, we gathered information on the labyrinth and recovery items. We challenged it fully prepared.
“Alright!! Let’s go!”
As expected, Dan skipped through the already conquered 1st to 3rd floors and headed straight into the 4th floor, which was still being explored. We pretended to cooperate at first.
Even though it was only the 4th floor, the monsters here were far stronger than those in other labyrinths. Giant centipedes, golems — all of them would fetch high prices if sold as materials. I realized why so many adventurers were drawn here. Other parties were fighting nearby as well.
“Haaaaah!!”
Dan struck down with his sword from above, obliterating a monster. Mana’s enchantment magic probably helped, but he still had decent strength — not S-rank level, but respectable.
“Alright!! Let’s keep pushing forward!”
He shouted, getting carried away. I wished he would just charge ahead alone. There were other parties around, so there were witnesses. I wanted to do it somewhere without eyes on us.
That was when it happened.
“Gyaaaaaaaah!!”
A scream echoed from deep in the passage. Soon after, two adventurers came running, carrying a bloodied comrade.
“Hey!! What happened?”
“A Manticore!! Why is something like that here!!”
His voice trembled with fear, but he told us. A Manticore — a high-level monster. Some have scorpion tails, lion heads, and wings on their backs.
“Dan-sama, we should retreat. It’s too dangerous!!”
Tina urged him. This wasn’t part of the plan, but against a Manticore, our lives were at risk.
“No, I can handle it. You guys just watch!!”
But he wouldn’t listen. He drew his sword and waited for the enemy. I thought about running during that moment, but the opponent didn’t give us the chance.
“GRAAAAAAAH!!!”
A roar echoed through the labyrinth. It appeared — purple skin, lion body and head, and a scorpion tail. Its breath had petrification effects, so we had to be careful.
“Haaaaah!!”
Dan charged head-on.
『Power Slash!!』
He activated 2nd-tier magic. We could use some magic too, though nowhere near Al-kun’s level. The slash wave from his sword struck the Manticore’s leg, drawing blood. Seeing it roar in pain, Dan got even more excited.
“Alright!! I can do this!!”
He closed in for melee attacks. However—
“Dan-sama!! Watch out!!”
The Manticore quickly recovered and attacked with its scorpion tail. Tina jumped in and blocked it, but then the Manticore charged, sending both Tina and Dan flying.
“Tina!!”
I forgot to call for Dan, but it didn’t matter now. I readied my sword, retreated, and regrouped with the two. Mana hurriedly cast healing magic on them. After that, I ran circles around the Manticore, attacking repeatedly to keep it from closing in.
I thought we could manage somehow. That’s when the unexpected happened.
“Gya!! Gya!!”
Goblins poured out from another passage behind us. Labyrinth goblins are much tougher and more cunning than the ones outside.
An troublesome enemy attacked from a different direction.
“Kh! 『Stone Wall』!”
Tina reacted instantly, sealing the passage with a rock wall to separate us from the monsters. However, the Manticore was ramming into it, and cracks were forming.
“This won’t hold long! Let’s escape quickly!!”
We nodded to Tina’s suggestion. Then—
“Alright, you guys be the decoys.”
“W-what are you saying!?”
I couldn’t believe what Dan said and shouted back.
“The Manticore has a good nose. It’ll chase us if we run. Buy me time to escape!!”
“This isn’t the time for—”
“You’re always so noisy!!”
Dan slapped Mana again. The impact caused her bag to spill its contents, including the parchment we had received.
“Hm?”
Mana desperately tried to gather her things, but Dan noticed and snatched the scroll.
“You were hiding something good!!”
“T-that’s…”
Mana fell silent. Dan grinned and waved the scroll.
“I can’t forgive you for hiding it from me, but I’ll let it slide if you act as decoys!!”
“Wait, that’s—”
Before Tina could say anything,
“Shut up!!”
Dan suddenly swung his sword down toward my leg. Fortunately it wasn’t completely severed, but my shin was slashed and bleeding.
“Ugh!?”
“What are you doing!?”
Tina unintentionally shouted at him.
“What’s with those eyes? You’re just servants — make yourselves useful!!”
With that, Dan ran back the way we came.
“You two, don’t worry about me, just go—”
“But!!”
“Aira!!”
I wanted the two of them to survive even if it cost me, but Mana was already casting healing on my leg while Tina readied her shield. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry for dragging you both into this. Regret made my tears unstoppable. Then, I suddenly remembered something in my bag.
“You two, inside your bags—”
“Bag… ah!!”
We pulled out Al-kun’s letter. The one that said “Use this if you’re truly in trouble.” Now was the time.
The letter was a type of scroll. Anyone could activate it by pouring magic power into it once. If we were going to die here anyway, we might as well—
We poured our magic power into it together. A magic circle spread beneath our feet, and light filled our vision. When the light faded, we found ourselves in an unfamiliar room.
We fell, I clutched my aching leg, and when I looked up—
“Everyone!!”
Al-kun was staring at us with a shocked expression.
Chapter 030: I Spoke With Mana-san’s Father
“Quickly treat the three of them!!”
Even though it was the middle of the night, the entire residence was in an uproar. Mother was issuing orders, telling servants to call doctors. The servants busily prepared meals, baths, and all the tools needed for treatment.
The three girls were carried to the guest rooms, where their clothes were changed. I cast healing magic on them. Aira-san’s injuries were especially severe, so I used a stronger spell on her. After that, I was kicked out with “Young master, please wait outside.”
It’s better to leave this to people more capable than me.
A while later, the doctors arrived. They had called quite a few. There was also our family physician, and among them was Mana-san’s father.
“How are they?”
“There are no major issues. The swordswoman’s leg wound is quite bad, but it should heal completely in about a week.”
Our family doctor said. I was relieved.
I checked their weapons and saw they had clearly come straight from battle — there were pieces of monster skin and such stuck to them.
(I heard they went to the Ryuto Labyrinth…)
They must have used the scroll when they reached a dead end during exploration. Looking at Aira-san’s wound, it was clear that Dan had tried to use them as decoys. He probably ran away by himself. Well, I don’t care about him right now.
As for how they managed to come here — the letter I gave them had a magic spell imbued in it that would teleport the person who poured magic power into it to my location. I didn’t have time to explain it in detail, so I only wrote “Use only when you’re truly in danger.” If I explained everything, Dan might have seen it and misused it, or it could have been destroyed.
Anyway, the most important thing is that the three of them made it back safely.
“Alphonse-sama.”
I turned around when called and saw Mana-san’s father — Ricardo-san.
“This time, my daughter has caused you great trouble and you even saved her life. Thank you very much.”
“It’s fine. I was also helped by her, and the one at fault is Dan.”
“Even so, what she did does not change. However…”
He looked down.
“The most useless one is me, her father.”
Ricardo-san looked down with deep regret.
“I didn’t know my daughter’s situation and didn’t even try to act. As a parent, I am a failure.”
“…………”
“It was me who bound her. That’s why she ended up in such a situation.”
He showed me the letter.
“This is the letter she sent. I was a fool. This finally woke me up.”
“This letter is—”
“It wrote about her relationship with Dan-sama, her relationship with you, Alphonse-sama, and how painful things are right now.”
I stayed silent. This is something that could probably be resolved quickly if I told Mother. But that wasn’t what he wanted. He just wanted someone to listen — his apology, his regret, and his resolve going forward.
“Alphonse-sama.”
“Yes.”
He called my name and made a request.
“Please continue to take care of my daughter from now on as well.”
“That is…”
“I understand. But I believe that is also what my daughter wants.”
He took out a brown envelope from his pocket.
“This is what I received from Tina-san’s father the other day.”
“I see.”
“It contains an offer from your mother to work for the Belladonna family.”
“!!”
I was surprised. I didn’t know Mother had done something like that.
“We have decided to accept it.”
“We?”
“Myself, Aira-san’s father, and Tina-san’s father.”
All three of them. I recall their families have served the ducal house for generations. To abandon that and come here…
“We agonized over it. After all, we are leaving a house we have served for generations. But my wife also agreed after seeing our daughter’s situation.”
“My family won’t necessarily remain safe forever, you know?”
When I said that, he smiled weakly.
“I understand. However, this house, with you as the future head, still has a bright future.”
“You think that highly of me?”
“From the eyes of an ordinary man, you shine far brighter than others. Moreover…”
He looked toward Urka-san and the others watching us from afar.
“Someone who managed to bring those three to this country and is loved by them cannot be called an ordinary person.”
Is that so? I just think I got lucky, but…
“Has the discussion concluded?”
“Mother!!”
Mother appeared at a good timing, having apparently been listening.
“Ricardo-san. Is this acceptable?”
“Yes, please take care of us.”
“Understood. Eduardo!!”
“Yes, Madam.”
The butler, Ed, appeared at Mother’s call.
“Negotiate with the ducal house. We’re moving.”
“As you wish.”
It seems Mother is heading to the Arbonne ducal house.
“Mother. At this late hour…”
“It’s fine. If he hears I’m coming, he’ll wake up immediately even if he’s asleep.”
With that, Mother got ready and left. Honestly, there was no role for me here.
A while later, the nurses told me, “They’re fine now.”
“Master.”
Sophia called out to me. She probably wanted to say I shouldn’t enter since they were sleeping.
“Just for a little bit.”
I sneaked in. The room was dark, and the three of them were sleeping soundly. They looked very tired — there were dark circles under their eyes.
I gently stroked each of their heads, then quietly left the room.
“Good night.”
Tomorrow, I’ll talk properly with the three of them. The guild visit will probably have to wait until after that.
Chapter 031: They Apologized To Me
The next day.
I heard from the maid that the three had woken up, so I went to visit them.
When I entered the room, the three of them had complicated expressions on their faces. I sat down where I could see all of them. In front of me was Aira-san with marigold-colored eyes and dark brown hair tied back. Next to her was Tina-san with light brown short hair and matching light brown eyes. Farthest back was Mana-san with light green semi-long hair and light blue eyes.
I didn’t come alone. Elena-san and Sophia were behind me.
“Just in case something happens.”
That was their reason for accompanying me. What does “something” even mean? I’m not going to do anything weird.
“…………”
Silence continued for a while. Since I had also been kicked out by them, I was struggling with how to start the conversation, but—
“U-um!!”
Mana-san spoke first.
“Al-kun, um… I’m so sorry!! For doing something so terrible to you.”
She bowed her head deeply. The other two followed suit.
“So… may we ask why you were kicked out?”
They told me everything — what Dan had proposed, and how they had no choice but to obey because they didn’t know what would happen to their families.
“We know it’s unforgivable.”
“We’ll accept any punishment.”
They spoke while shedding tears.
“I can’t forgive that. Especially that guy named Dan.”
“Yeah. He’s the next head of a ducal house, right? I want to beat him to a pulp.”
The two behind me unusually agreed with each other.
I understand that they had no choice but to listen to Dan due to the master-servant relationships in noble society. They had also been good to me, and while what they did was wrong, I—
“I understand. Let’s forgive the three of you!!”
“””Eh!?”””
“Master, is that really okay?”
Sophia asked in a cold voice. From her perspective, the three were equally guilty and unforgivable.
“Yeah. What the three of you did was bad, but I really like all of you. So I think it’s okay to give you another chance.”
At my words, all three blushed. At the same time, I felt a dangerous aura from behind me.
Sophia, calm down!!
“Then Master, what kind of chance will you give them?”
“Hmm…”
Elena-san asked. That was a difficult question. Invite them to party together again? Or—
“I heard everything!!”
Mother suddenly entered the room.
“Mom!?”
“Al-kun. Leave the rest to me!!”
Following Mother, six people came in. They were the girls’ parents.
“Mother!? Father!?”
Aira-san cried out in surprise.
“Aira. I’m sorry.”
Each parent rushed to their daughter and offered words of apology.
“I’ll have these six start working immediately today!!”
“That was fast, Mom.”
I could only smile wryly. As expected of Mother.
“The mothers will help at the shop or work as housekeepers. The three men will continue as before.”
“I-I see.”
She had already decided their roles too.
“As for these three girls…”
“…………”
“I think I’ll have them work as maids.”
“Eh!?”
I was surprised by Mother’s suggestion.
“””!!!???”””
The three of them also looked shocked, eyes wide open.
“I’ll put them under Sophia, so work hard for Al-kun!!”
It was probably Mother’s consideration. I was a bit anxious about working under Sophia, but I was still happy.
“Yes.”
“Thank you very much.”
Mana-san and Tina-san thanked her. The three of them shed tears again, but these were different from before. I think this also serves as atonement. I’m glad I can stay with the three of them too.
“So, Sophia. I’m counting on you.”
“Yes, Madam. Leave it to me.”
For some reason, I sensed a mysterious fighting spirit from her. Why is she so fired up?
“Umm, by the way Al-kun.”
“Yes, what is it, Mom?”
“About Elena-san and the others — they stayed here last night, but starting tomorrow, I think they should move to that villa over there.”
“That sounds great!!”
Mother pointed toward a separate villa about half the size of this residence. Honestly, there’s plenty of room here, but since they are state guests, she probably judged that a proper house would be better.
“And regarding Al-kun…”
“Yeah.”
“Where do you want to live?”
“Eh?”
“So, the villa or here?”
“…………”
That’s right. The two behind me are probably going to fight over this again—
“I would like Master to stay with us. We… feel more at ease when Master is with us.”
“Elena-san.”
Last night, Elena-san and the others couldn’t sleep, so they stayed with me until I fell asleep. Because of that, I want to stay with them.
“Mom. I’m sorry, but I think I’ll stay with Elena-san and the others.”
However, Sophia didn’t assert herself. That’s unusual.
“I understand. Mom will be lonely, but we can see each other anytime!!”
“Yeah!!”
Is that really okay? Then Sophia said,
“Master. I am your personal maid. I will come with you as well.”
Ah, so that’s what she meant.
“Mu!!”
“…………”
I felt like sparks flew between Elena-san and Sophia again, but I’ll just ignore it. They’re probably on good terms deep down.
And so, the moving of Rosaria-san and the others started immediately. Surprisingly, the villa already had all the necessary furniture and items prepared. As expected of Mother.
Once the move was finished in the morning, I said,
“Well then, I’m off to the guild. I have a lot to report.”
“Take care.”
Butler Eduardo bowed and saw me off. Mother had shut herself in her office, busy with work. As for Father? He went to work. He’s a teacher at the academy, believe it or not.
“Shall we go then?”
“””Yes (Yeah) (Un)”””
Of course they wouldn’t let me go alone. Rosaria-san, Elena-san, Urka-san, and even Sophia. It’s going to be really conspicuous though…
