Chapter 005: Rosaria Part 1: How I Ended Up Here
(Rosaria’s Perspective)
Warning: Contains cruel and disturbing depictions.
What was I even doing?
I was called the ‘Black Panther of the Empire’. I fought and won on countless battlefields.
And yet… and yet!! The Empire!! The Emperor!!
I was born in a town in the southeast of the Kalos Empire.
Born into poverty, I spent my childhood mainly hunting with my father to survive.
But during the war with the Holy Kingdom, my father was conscripted as a soldier and never came back.
I had to feed my mother no matter what.
At the age of 14, I volunteered for the military.
Fortunately, the marksmanship I had honed through hunting proved useful, and I achieved decent results on the battlefield.
I steadily rose to the rank of squad captain. However, there was a wall I couldn’t break through.
My mother belonged to one of the empire’s indigenous ethnic groups.
Because of that, there was some discrimination. After my father’s death, it grew even worse. I also received discriminatory remarks because of my brown skin like my mother’s, but I didn’t care about that. However, it greatly affected my chances of promotion.
That’s why I needed a major military achievement big enough to silence them all.
The opportunity came quickly — and it was against the Holy Kingdom.
I led my unit into battle and even managed to take down the enemy’s vice commander.
My ability to lead troops was recognized, and I was allowed to attend officer school. There I studied tactics, military strategy, geography, and all the necessary knowledge.
Four years had passed since I enlisted. By then, based on my achievements, I had risen to the position of operations staff officer and commanded forces on various battlefields.
Then, during the war with the commercial union of Van, my name became known throughout the world.
A small imperial force defeated an enemy with twice our numbers. The entire empire rejoiced.
Looking back, those were good days. My mother and I lived in a luxurious residential district in the imperial capital and lived a wealthy life.
Two years later, I became the first female general in the empire, both in age and gender.
For the next two years, I fought across various fronts and continued to achieve victory.
Up to that point, everything was good. Yes, it was truly good.
Of course, I knew there were people who were jealous of me. I also knew there were assassination attempts.
So I acted cautiously. But it still wasn’t enough.
The trigger was the change of emperor. The emperor who had recognized me was frail and died one year after I became a general.
The man who became the next emperor was his younger brother — and he was scum. He ignored my advice, had no interest in politics, but would fly into a rage if anyone commented on his personal desires. I never understood why someone like him became emperor.
It happened suddenly when I returned from the war with the Philos Union.
First, I was summoned by the emperor.
There were rumors that I was plotting to assassinate him.
I naturally denied it. But the surrounding nobles shouted over my voice: “You must not believe her!” “Your Majesty, do not listen to this traitor’s lies.”
I was stunned. I never thought the nobles were scum as well.
In the end, the emperor ordered my arrest. I desperately pleaded that I would never do such a thing, but he wouldn’t listen.
Some time later, the trial began.
It was completely against me. I had no allies. However, my own troops were there. I saw a ray of hope. If they testified to my innocence—
But the result was devastating.
The man who was once my right hand, the woman who always listened to me — every single one of them testified that I had plotted to assassinate the emperor.
To deliver the final blow, even my own mother shouted, “You are a traitor!!” and abandoned me.
The judge, the nobles in the gallery, my troops, and even my family — everyone had thrown me away.
By the time the trial ended, I no longer had the will to resist.
I was dragged away and thrown into an underground prison.
And then hell began.
Countless tortures started.
“Confess!! Say you plotted it!!”
I was beaten with rods, whipped, and doused with water.
Meals were only once a day — a tasteless soup. And at night,
naked men would come. I have no memory of it. I was probably violated.
By this point, my vision had become blurry.
Dying would have been better.
How many days had passed? One of my arms was gone. My legs wouldn’t move.
I couldn’t see out of one eye. Was I even alive?
The cell door opened. A man was there. He carried me and put me on a carriage.
The carriage kept moving. Where were we going? I lost consciousness.
When I woke up, I was in another prison cell. Not the previous room. Some of my strength had returned.
But the despair remained the same.
From the man in front of me, I learned this was a slave shop. It seemed I had been sold. I almost laughed.
But I was in this terrible state. People who walked past me pinched their noses and looked at me like I was filth.
The shopkeeper, frustrated that I wouldn’t sell, kicked me. I could only roll limply.
I was moved to other shops. There were many days when I wasn’t even given food.
After that, I was passed from shop to shop. My consciousness was even hazier than before.
In that last shop, I was abandoned in the basement. I heard the word “disposal.” Finally, I could die. I thought it had been the worst possible life.
Suddenly, I saw the woman in front of me and the one on the left.
They were a knight from the Holy Kingdom and the warrior chief from the Union.
Even though they were enemies, I felt sympathy for them. They too had been abandoned by their countries.
But my story didn’t end there.
The sound of the door opening.
It was a boy. A boy much smaller than me with brown hair and amber eyes.
The shopkeeper put a collar on me. It seemed he was buying me.
Even I thought it strange — who would buy someone on the verge of death?
Then everything suddenly went dark.
The next thing I saw was the ceiling of a luxurious room. The feeling on my back told me I was lying on a bed.
I thought I would meet my end here. Not a bad place for a final moment, I thought.
But then the boy did something unbelievable.
『Extra Heal』
Vitality returned to my body. My legs, which had lost all sensation, began to regenerate. My arm came back.
Warmth. Tears wouldn’t stop flowing.
Hey, boy… why are you making that face? Why are you saving someone like me who was about to die?
I, who can no longer believe in people, don’t know how to live anymore.
Hey, boy… tell me…
Is it okay for me to keep living?
