Chapter 001: Seems Like I’ve Been Fired
My name is Alphonse = Reis = Belladonna.
I’m 10 years old. Quite young, as everyone tells me.
My family runs a merchant business. My adventurer father married into my mother’s family, and that’s how I was born.
I’ve been working as an adventurer since I was 8.
This is because I have a talent for magic. I was valued for that talent and became an adventurer.
The person who recommended me was the Guild Master of the town of Versha, where I live. Thanks to that, I was able to join a decent party.
The party consisted of the leader and swordsman Dan, another swordsman Aira, the healer Mana, the shield-bearer Tina, and me.
Everyone was about 10 years older than me. At first, they welcomed me warmly. Yes, at the very beginning they did.
Things started to go wrong after about a year.
We were completing requests smoothly and rose to S-rank at a fairly fast pace. That was when Dan began to change.
His womanizing worsened, he started gambling, and his drinking habits turned bad.
During quests, he would hurl abuse at me and sometimes even try to hit me.
Each time, the women in the party protected me. I’m truly grateful to all of them.
However, one day half a year later, in front of the entire party, I was suddenly told:
“Al, sorry, but we don’t need you anymore.”
It came out of nowhere.
The others wouldn’t even look at me. They seemed to be desperately holding something back.
“W-why…?”
“You don’t get it? You’re always fidgeting and moving around during requests — it’s an eyesore. The party works just fine without you. We don’t have money to waste on you.”
I thought it was strange for him to call it “my party” when we had all built it together.
But no one spoke up for me. That meant this was a unanimous decision.
Tears threatened to spill out. I had worked so hard and tried so desperately to be useful.
But I told myself that crying here would mean I’d lost.
“I… I understand. Thank you for everything until now.”
I couldn’t completely hide the tremor in my voice. Dan told me to pack my belongings and leave by tomorrow.
I nodded, then returned to my room on the second floor.
Once I was back in my room, I broke down crying. The tears wouldn’t stop.
Tomorrow I would have to leave everyone.
Thinking that, I took out paper, ink, and a pen from my extra-dimensional storage space on the desk.
I decided to write thank-you letters to the older girls who had been kind to me.
There was so much to say. By the time I finished the three letters for Aira and the others, morning had already arrived.
I quietly slipped the letters under the doors of their respective rooms and left the inn.
Since the request was complete, we had been staying in a village that was three days’ travel from Versha, where my family home is located.
Fortunately, a carriage had just arrived, so I paid the fare and got on board.
What should I do from now on?
I was thinking about that, completely unaware of what would happen next.
