Chapter 10: Saving the Maid and Getting an Alchemy Workshop

“The new lord has arrived!”

Silence…

“This is the man who will become the savior of our land! Open the gates!”

The knight commander shouted in front of the lord’s mansion gate, but there was no answer at all.

“…Hmm, how rude. Big brother came all this way from far away.”

Tinny puffed out her cheeks, looking unhappy.

“I’m terribly sorry! After the previous lord died of illness, a young maid was supposed to be managing the mansion by herself… I wonder where she is?”

“Maybe that maid collapsed from the Black Death. Tinny, force the gate open!”

On the way to the lord’s mansion, we hardly saw anyone walking around the town.

When Tinny gave the gate a light tap, it burst open with a loud bang, the latch flying off.

The knight commander kept nodding, clearly impressed.
But even with that loud noise, no one came out from inside the mansion. Something really must have happened to the maid.

“Let’s hurry and look for the maid. Knight commander, please check the second floor. Tinny and I will search the first floor.”

“Got it! Hey, Eris, where are you!?”

The knight commander immediately ran up the stairs.

“Still, she was maintaining this huge mansion all by herself…”

The inside of the mansion was spotlessly clean.
The previous lord’s family had moved to another territory, and all the servants had apparently been let go.

The maid who stayed behind kept managing the mansion alone even without pay… She must be a really serious girl.
I was impressed.

“Tinny, can you tell where the maid is?”

Just then, a calico cat appeared with the sound of a bell.

As a dragon, Tinny could communicate with animals.

“Maybe it’ll lead us to the maid?”

The cat walked out into the garden and glanced back at us.

We followed after the cat.
It stopped in front of a tomato field and let out a loud meow.

“Ah, big brother, it looks like the maid has collapsed inside the tomato field.”

“Got it. Let’s help her right away!”

We ran through the beautiful tomato field with its green and red contrast.
There, a girl who looked about sixteen was lying there, completely limp.

“Are you okay!?”

I rushed over in a panic.

Black spots—the symptoms of the Black Death—were scattered across the girl’s face. The disease seemed pretty advanced.
Had she been working in this condition? That was reckless.

“Please drink this!”

I lifted her up and drank the Elixir into her mouth.

“Good. Looks like we made it just in time.”

I breathed a sigh of relief as I watched the black spots disappear rapidly from her face.

“Big brother is the new lord of Beograd.”

“Eh!? The new lord, Myce Windsor!? I-I’m so sorry for my rudeness!”

The girl who jumped up quickly bowed her head deeply. Her face turned bright red like a ripe tomato.

“I am Eris, a maid who has served the lords of Beograd for generations. I was preparing a welcome feast, but I collapsed… How embarrassing!”

She really did seem like a very serious girl. She had pushed herself all alone just to welcome me.

“Please rest today and don’t do anything. The welcome feast can wait until tomorrow or later.”

“No, I need to start mass-producing Elixir immediately, so don’t worry about me.”
